War Comes to Victoria: The Lusitania Riot
This rare film clip from our film archives was made on May 8th 1915 | Video courtesy of the Royal BC Museum and Archives Allan D. Taylor Collection, V1991:01/003.02 Item #05. Courtesy of the diffusion program of the Library and Archives of Canada.
The civilian liner Lusitania departed New York for Liverpool carrying munitions, under a flag of neutrality. On May 7, 1915, off Ireland, it was torpedoed and sank immediately. Among the 1,198 dead were many women and children, including entire families from Victoria, Vancouver, Nelson and other BC communities. James Dunsmuir Jr., son of the former Premier and Lieutenant-Governor, also died. He had resigned his officer’s commission to join a British Cavalry regiment.
The news came to Victoria on top of the reports about the first use of poison gas. Soldiers waiting to go overseas gathered in the bar of the former Kaiserhoff Hotel (Blanshard and Johnson Street). The riot began there. Next they attacked the old German-Canadian Club. Mobs attacked any businesses with a German-sounding name on May 8 and 9, even dressmakers and tobacco shops.
The businesses attacked were owned by long-established Canadian families. Some were not German. Families wrote to the papers declaring their citizenship and loyalty. Some renounced their family names. War had come to Victoria.

The Art and Literature of the Great War
David Gariff, senior lecturer, National Gallery of Art.
The First World War, known as the Great War, was also the first modern war, claiming millions of lives, in part, by newly invented weapons such as the machine gun, tank, aircraft, and poison gas. The arts of the period present a portrait of the terrible price paid by humanity—the carnage and suffering caused by the war were documented in paintings, sculptures, novels, memoirs, and poems produced both during, and immediately after, the struggle. In this presentation on March 27, 2019, senior lecturer David Gariff explores the responses of artists and writers to the trauma of the First World War, which transcended national boundaries. Paintings, sculptures, and prints by Otto Dix, Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Käthe Kollwitz, Fernand Léger, John Singer Sargent, and Natalija Goncharova; poems by Siegfried Sassoon, Wilfred Owen, and Anna Akhmatova; and memoirs and novels by Ernest Hemingway, Erich Maria Remarque, and Robert Graves are discussed against the backdrop of “the war to end all wars.”

Prince Charles presents the Queen's light cavalry regiment
Prince Charles presents the Queen's light cavalry regiment
Prince Charles presented his own regiment with a new military standard at a special consecration service today.
Charles, who is Royal Honorary Colonel of the Queen's Yeomanry, (QOY) presented the regiment with a new Guidon - or military standard - then joked with guests as he made a speech to the crowd.
The ceremony took place at Bramham Park House, Wetherby, and saw 140 members, both serving and retired, parade on the front lawn for around 650 guests.
During the day HRH, who has been the Royal Honorary Colonel of the Queen's Own Yeomanry since May 2000, took the salute to a group of officers and gave a short speech.
Wearing his ceremonial frock coat and sword, Charles presented a new Guidon military standard to the commanding officer and regiment.
During his address the heir to the throne paid tribute to the soldiers and their families and spoke of his 'gratitude and undying admiration' of the 'truly exceptional' contribution they made to the armed forces.
He even took time to joke with soldiers and their families as he made the presentation of the new standard in front of serving and retired members of the military services.
Charles said in a speech: 'The Guidon that has been marched off parade today represents over two centuries of volunteer service to the crown at home and abroad - service which has continued to this day.
'I acknowledge with immense gratitude and undying admiration the truly exceptional contribution that your officers, soldiers and families provide so selflessly to the defence of the realm.
'You set us an outstanding example that I, for one, do not take for granted.'
Warrant Officer Second Class David William, who marched the old standard off and the new one on, said it was an 'honour'.
He added: 'It was a wonderful opportunity to meet the prince, he joked about the fact that the weather has improved.'
It was the second time in the regiments 47-year history that they have received the honour.
The Prince of Wales also ensured that he joined the soldiers for a regimental photograph, before heading into a reception made up of around 200 troops and their family and friends.
He last presented the QOY with a Military Standard on September 22, 2007, at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, making it 11 years since the last ceremony.
A Guidon is a swallow tailed flag for the colours of a light cavalry regiment, which Prince Charles could be seen holding during the regimental photograph.
The Queen's Own Yeomanry is a light cavalry regiment in the Army Reserve which involves operating in front of other forces to gather intelligence on the enemy.
Guidons evolved from banners of the Knights of the Middle Ages and was typically carried by a Knight, which have become more elaborate over the years.
The first use of a Guidon by the British Cavalry is not known, but the name is believed to derive from the French Cavalry emblem in the 17th century.
In the British Army, standards and Guidons were originally carried by a knight, eventually becoming very elaborate.
By the end of the 18th century it had was customary for them to bear the battle honours of the regiment, and could have as many as 21 insignia on each side.
Since the 18th century it has been traditional for the Guidon to bear the Battle Honours of the regiments, during a Light Cavalry parade they will be carried by senior Warrant Officers.
Typically the Guidon will be red in colour with a gold trim, with the regiments crest emblazoned across the centre as well as their Battle Honours displayed on either side.
Also attending the parade today as a special guest, due to his fathers connection with the regiment, was the Duke of Westminster.
Two of the soldiers, who have made an 'outstanding contribution' will be received the Duke of Westminster Medal.
Charles himself has a total of nine military medals during his career as a general in the army, an admiral in the navy and even an air chief marshal in the RAF, without actually having served in a theatre of active combat.

Alan Wilson Historian - The Hidden History of Britain
Turn on captions for English subtitles.
Alan Wilson is a British historian specialising in the origins and ancient history of the British and the history of the ancient British kings including two real King Arthurs.
Arthurian research:
In 1976, after a chance meeting with historical researcher, Anthony Thomas 'Baram' Blackett, at the public library in Newcastle upon Tyne, the two men decided to put up many thousands of pounds of their own money to fund full-time research into the origins of King Arthur. The Arthurian stories, so popular today, came out of South-Eastern Wales into France, via the Normans, in the 12th century and this encouraged them to start their search in the same place. The search soon moved beyond Wales to include the English Midlands which had been dominated by the old Welsh Kingdoms for centuries.
To date, Wilson and Blackett have published seven books that provide information based upon Old Welsh records that date to the 12th Century. They believe that these provide a final solution to the King Arthur story and have clearly identified the true sites of the battles of Badon (Mynydd Baedan) and Camlann.
In 1983, Wilson and Blackett discovered what they believe to be King Arthur's memorial stone at the small ruined church of St Peter-super-Montem on Mynydd-y-Gaer in Mid-Glamorgan, which they subsequently purchased. The stone was offered to the National Museum of Wales (Amguedda Werin Cymru) for analysis, but the offer was not taken up. Subsequently it went on public display in various venues for some time. Following this, they employed the services of two archaeologists, (Professor Eric Talbot and Alan Wishart) in 1990, to lead a dig at the same place. During the excavations, which were authorised by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, several artefacts were discovered including an ancient axe, a knife and a small cross weighing two and a half pounds, that reads Pro Anima Artorius (For The Soul Of Arthur). The cross was subsequently tested by an independent metallurgical house, Bodycote PLC, and found to be made of electrum, and so certified. The cross was offered up to the National Museum of Wales for public testing, but this also was declined.Wilson and Blackett had already identified the church as an ancient historical site possibly originally dating from the first century A.D. Other major Welsh kings are buried locally.
More recently, Wilson and Blackett began a search for what was known as 'The Greatest Work of the Cymru' - Cyfrangon. This is allegedly a massive, hollow, man-made hill concealed somewhere in Wales (similar to Silbury Hill). Treasure hunters in Wales have long sought this fabled hill in which, it is believed, lie several objects of tremendous historical and archaeological value, many of which may be covered in gold or copper.
The use of deep ground probing metal detection and analysis equipment revealed non ferrous metal artefacts some fifteen feet below the surface of the hill at Twyn y Glog, near Ynysybwl in mid Glamorgan. Further investigation by collaborators proved that the original height of the hill lies some 30 or more metres below the Ordnance Survey height, and that the hill is therefore an artificial construct. (Berkly, G., 2007).
No further tests have been made to date (10 September 2007).
Lecture tours:
Alan Wilson and his colleague lectured extensively in the United Kingdom, including Manchester and Jesus College at the University of Oxford, and Alan Wilson gave the prestigious Bemis Lecture in Boston in 1993. Research into claims that the Welsh settled in mid-western America in antiquity led to Wilson and his colleague, Baram Blackett, accepting invitations from American supporters to visit US sites of historical significance in 1994. The visit led to several television appearances and the deciphering of alphabetic inscriptions claimed to be in the old 'Coelbren' alphabet. Wilson also concluded that the many snake mounds in the American Mid-west were of ancient Khumric-British construction. Whilst in America, the two men were also commissioned to produce a detailed genealogy for the Bush family (friends and supporters of President George H. W. Bush).
