Audlem Music Festival Day Two
The Village of Audlem
Audlem really is Cheshire's southern gem, a picturesque rural village with incredible community spirit. A great venue for the festival. In 2005 the village won the DEFRA national award for 'Building Community Life' and the 'North of England Village of the Year' as well as the 'Cheshire Village of the Year'.
Audlem is where the Shires meet. Shropshire is a short walk away on the Shropshire Union Canal and Staffordshire minutes away by car. Audlem's three main roads are, appropriately, Cheshire Street, Stafford Street and Shropshire Street.
The village has three excellent pubs, the Shroppie Fly and the Bridge Inn next to the canal and the Lord Combermere in the village centre. All three become music venues over the festival weekend. We are now in our 18th year with another cracker lined up, get your weekend booked, you will not be disappointed.
Venues: The Bridge Inn, The Shroppie Fly, The Lord Combermere, No. 11 The Courtyard, The Bit On The Side (public hall annexe), The Mill Shop, Audlem Methodist Church
Episode 9 - FIRE AND WATER and a Trip to Audlem
In this episode I cruise in frustrating circles on my narrowboat around various marinas and boatyards on The Trent and Mersey Canal, The Shropshire Union, Canal, and The Middlewich Branch. How difficult can it be to install a multi fuel stove on a narrowboat?! I also take some time out in beautiful Audlem, and catch The Dodgy Jammers at The Shroppie Fly. LINK
Overwater Marina Audlem, Cheshire.mpg
Overwater Marina on the Shropshire Union Canal, near to Audlem, had its official opening on Saturday 24th July, 2010. This 227 berth eco-friendly marina is set in the heart of a beautiful Cheshire dairy farm and provides all modern facilities including the Overwater Coffee Lounge and the Audlem Boat Company boat workshop. The marina also offers brokerage facilities via Rugby Boat Sales.

Passing through a lock
Autherley Stop Lock & Junction
Autherley Junction is at the junction of the Shropshire Union and Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canals.
Autherley Stop Lock is another of those annoying locks with a fall of six inches serving no other purpose than preventing rival canal companies stealing each others water.
Thinking we were being polite we waited to see if anyone else wanted to use the Stop Lock before we set it in our favour. There was and what we got was some annoyingly slow bugger who decided that the top gate was stuck due to silt and, in attempt to cure the problem, appeared to mount it. Kinky or what?
Anyroadup it took the bugger several ice ages to bring his boat out of the lock before slothing off into the wild blue yonder. We can only assume he was worried about scratching his boat on the silt. Twat.
Shropshire Union Canal - Gnosall Heath
Gnosall is spelt G N O S A L L and pronounced G-nozull just like G-nome, G-nu and G-nat (ie the G is not silent like the P in bath)
Gnosall offers everything the self respecting narrowboater could wish for, water points, visitor moorings and a selection of pubes.
While your noble skipper and the good lady wife were ashore on foraging duties, the crew spent a good two hours indulging in SSSSCGRing (ie having a shit, shave, shower, shampoo and changing into glad rags) Little wonder we spent more time on this trip refilling the water tank than we did cruising.

Shropshire Union Canal - Adderley Locks
The Adderley Flight of five locks raises the Shropshire Union Canal 31 feet over a quarter of a mile in the direction of Market Drayton.
It was particularly windy and the chap emerging from the bottom lock was well and truely pinned to the side after picking up his crew. He wasn't helped by the flow from the bypass weir or the vast prop waves thrown up by Blind Hannibal MacSlackbladder in his attempts to enter said lock.
