Drive around Bristol Centre to Check Out British Restaurants
With our Australian cousins due to make a flying visit to Bristol as part of their extensive tour of the UK, and wishing to meet up with us for an evening meal during their visit, we felt it would be most appropriate to take them to a Traditional British Restaurant.
In deciding which venue would be most suitable when they visit, we decided to make a tour of some of our favourite local haunts, starting with the Hole in the Wall in the centre of Bristol, and after checking out the numerous restaurants, cafes and other eateries along the Harbourside and on the city centre, make our way back to some of our favourite restaurants near where we live.
The Hole in the Wall was our first choice because it’s near the City Centre, the building itself is c1746, and when we went there years ago was a very Traditional British Restaurant. However, on our revisit, although the menu is still ‘British’ the seating (at least down stairs) was more ‘casual’ (reclining), more suited to relaxed ‘pub’ socialising than sitting up at the table for a 2 hour three course meal.
When we parked up at the Harbourside to check out the vast number of eateries along the waterfront, most cater for ‘international’ taste, and the one place we did find that does British Food, the ‘Slug and Lettuce’ (Cocktail Bar on the Harbourside) the building was too modern e.g. clinical, with no olde British atmosphere.
Moving onto the City Centre, we did spot the Drawbridge (next to the famous Hippodrome Theatre), a pub that we’ve used before, and which does excellent Traditional British ‘Pub Grub’, which could possibly be a good choice; but we concluded that being a popular pub on the City Centre it might be too busy, and noisy, to be difficult to enjoy a quiet chat with family and friends over a meal.
Therefore, we headed out for the ‘Snuff Mill’ Harvester Restaurant in Frenchay, Bristol (just 10 minutes from where we live). It’s a favourite haunt of ours, and very Traditional British Food, in a Traditional British setting; including the indoor fishpond in the middle of the restaurant.

NIGHT-TIME VISITOR found crawling around on the skirting board (LARGE SLUG in a Neighbour's Kitchen)
Slugs:
Slugs are persistent and widespread pests which can cause havoc in the garden, eating holes in leaves, stems, flowers, tubers and bulbs. They can cause damage throughout the year on a wide range of plants, but seedlings and new growth on herbaceous plants in spring are most at risk.
What are slugs?
Slugs are gastropods; single-shelled, soft-bodied animals in the mollusc group of animals. Slugs can use their rasping tongues to make holes in leaves, stems, buds, flowers, roots, corms, bulbs and tubers of many plants. There are many control options available for slugs and snail but despite this they remain a persistent pest. The RHS is carrying out a scheme of research on gastropod control methods to improve the advice we can give to home gardeners.
Most slugs feed at night, and the slime trails, if present, can alert you to the level of activity. Damage is usually most severe during warm humid periods.
Slugs can make a meal of a wide range of vegetables and ornamental plants, especially seedlings and other soft growth. Hostas, delphiniums, dahlias, gerberas, sweet peas and tulips are regularly attacked by slugs, and it can be difficult to grow these plants if you have a big slug problem. In the vegetable garden peas, beans, lettuce, celery and potato tubers are often damaged.
Many larger slugs primarily feed on decomposing organic matter such as dead leaves dung and even dead slugs. In the compost heap they can be a valuable part of the composting process.
Gastropoda:
The gastropods (/ˈɡæstroʊpɒd/), more commonly known as snails and slugs, belong to a large taxonomic class of invertebrates within the phylum Mollusca, called Gastropoda. This class includes snails and slugs of all species and sizes, from microscopic to Achatina achatina, the largest known land gastropod. Many thousands of species of sea snails and slugs, as well as freshwater snails, freshwater limpets, and land snails and slugs, live on Earth.
The class Gastropoda contains a vast total of named species, second only to the insects in overall number. The fossil history of this class goes back to the Late Cambrian. As of 2017, 721 families of gastropods are known, of which 245 are extinct and appear only in the fossil record, while 476 are currently extant with or without a fossil record.[5]
Gastropoda (previously known as univalves and sometimes spelled Gasteropoda) are a major part of the phylum Mollusca, and are the most highly diversified class in the phylum, with 65,000 to 80,000[3][4] living snail and slug species. The anatomy, behavior, feeding, and reproductive adaptations of gastropods vary significantly from one clade or group to another. Therefore, it is difficult to state many generalities for all gastropods.
The class Gastropoda has an extraordinary diversification of habitats. Representatives live in gardens, woodland, deserts, and on mountains; in small ditches, great rivers and lakes; in estuaries, mudflats, the rocky intertidal, the sandy subtidal, in the abyssal depths of the oceans including the hydrothermal vents, and numerous other ecological niches, including parasitic ones.
United States:
The United States of America (USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S.) or America (/əˈmɛrɪkə/), is a federal republic[16][17] composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major self-governing territories, and various possessions.[fn 6] Forty-eight states and the federal district are contiguous and located in North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is in the northwest corner of North America, bordered by Canada to the east and across the Bering Strait from Russia to the west. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific Ocean. The U.S. territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, stretching across nine official time zones. The extremely diverse geography, climate and wildlife of the United States make it one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries.[19]
At 3.8 million square miles (9.8 million km2)[20] and with over 324 million people, the United States is the world's third- or fourth-largest country by total area,[fn 7] and the third-most populous. The capital is Washington, D.C., and the largest city is New York City; twelve other major metropolitan areas—each with at least 4.5 million inhabitants—are Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Miami, Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco, Phoenix, and Riverside.

5 Things Your Poop Says About Your Health
“While most people probably don't want to put much thought into pooping, it's an essential body function that can tell them if something is wrong. A change in bowel movements could be due merely to a change in diet, but it could also mean the body is fighting an infection or dealing with a serious condition.”
