Mount Maunganui Tauranga, New Zealand
Mount Maunganui is one of the best tourist spots in Tauranga here in New Zealand. It is a large lava dome which was formed by the upwelling of rhyolite lava million years ago.
You can hike the top of the mountain for about 30 to 40 minutes depending on your speed and endurance. Don't forget to bring bottled water and wear a proper hiking gear because my friend and I failed to do both. haha!
I used my Samsung Note8 phone and my Canon M50 to shoot the videos so the quality of the video clips differ. :)

1 - Mount Maunganui Main Beach
The Mount main beach is a popular place with tourists and locals with nice places to get a coffee, ice cream, drinks and food. It is a surf beach so if you are keen, bring your surfboard and hire one from the local shops. Also you can hire kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and jet skis from Pilot Bay just a few minutes’ walk from the main beach
2 - Go up the Mount
Going up the Mount is something you definitely must do. There are two ways you can go up, one with mainly steps and the other with gravel path most the way. The way up is not too hard so a person with a normal level of fitness should be okay. Once at the top you will have an incredible view of the region and appreciate the beauty of the sea. If you decide not go up you can walk around the base of the Mount and that should take you around 45 minutes.
3 - Mount Hot Pools
After going up the Mount or finished surfing you can soak and relax at the Mount Hot Pools. With different temperature pools and spa pools ranging from 33.4°C and 39.7°C you will have plenty of choices to enjoy.
4 - Eating and shopping at the Mount
The Mount centre strip will offer you plenty of options to grab a bite or a drink. With a hand full of cafes and restaurants with diverse cuisine styles from Turkish to Mexican, Japanese, Indian and various coffee shops. The strip also has lots of great retails shops and if you are looking for gifts to someone special or for yourself you will find in there.
5 - Tauranga Waterfront
It is an area popular with tourists and locals especially on the weekend. You will normally find the place full with families and kids playing along. You can also cross the old railway bridge by foot or bicycle. Great restaurants in the area will give you extra reason to visit the waterfront.
Mount Maunganui - Tauranga NZ
Mount Maunganui, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand
Mount Maunganui is a major residential, commercial and industrial suburb of Tauranga, located on a peninsula to the north-east of Tauranga's city centre. It is a holiday paradise - you can surf, swim, play golf, shop, dine or simply relax and soak up the atmosphere. There’s no pressure here, just take your time to enjoy the pace of life you want.
Mount Maunganui is located atop a sand bar that connects Mauao to the mainland, a geographical formation known as a tombolo. Because of this formation, the residents of Mount Maunganui have both a harbour beach (Pilot Bay) and an ocean beach with great surf, within a short distance. At the base of Mauao, the distance between the harbour and ocean side is a couple of blocks.
The ocean beach has Mauao or Mount Maunganui at its western end, and a man made land bridge connecting Moturiki Island at its eastern end.
Mauao (The Mount) is a large lava dome which rises above the town. According to Maori legend, this hill was a pononga [slave] to a mountain called Otanewainuku. The conical headland which gives the town its name is 232 metres (761 ft) in height, and dominates the mostly flat surrounding countryside.
Climbing The Mount in Tauranga, New Zealand
Mount Maunganui is a holiday paradise - you can surf, swim, play golf, shop, dine or simply relax and soak up the atmosphere. There’s no pressure here, just take your time to enjoy the pace of life you want.
Located across the harbour from Tauranga, “the Mount” is almost surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, with New Zealand’s best beach on one side of its peninsula, and the sheltered waters of Pilot Bay on the other.
And overlooking it all towers the mountain itself – Mauao.
Standing 232m above sea level, Mauao means ‘caught be the dawn’ and the mountain is steeped in Maori history and mythology. Several historical pa sites (villages) have been built on this extinct volcanic cone, the evidence of which can still be seen today as you explore the popular walking tracks.
It will take you around 45 minutes to circumnavigate Mauao’s 3.4km-long base track. This is New Zealand’s most popular walk, with expansive ocean views, majestic pohutukawa trees, peaceful beach inlets and numerous places where you can stop and admire the view. The wide, well-maintained pathway is suitable for strollers and you can finish your walk off with an ice-cream on the beach afterwards.
There are several tracks to Mauao’s summit where you can enjoy breathtaking 360° views along the entire Bay of Plenty coastline, and out across the harbour to Tauranga and the Kaimai Range beyond.
Mount Maunganui’s Main Beach has been crowned the ‘Best Beach in New Zealand’ by TripAdvisor, and ranks among the top 25 best beaches in the world.
Relax on the wide expanse of white sand and swim in the warm ocean waves. This is a great place to kick back and people watch. Numerous beach, ocean and multisport events are held here and people of all ages enjoy the Main Beach year-round.
Stroll across the road and choose a table at any number of beachside cafes and restaurants. This relaxed al-fresco dining precinct is the perfect place to enjoy breakfast, brunch or lunch in the sunshine.
Just around the corner you’ll find some of the best boutique shopping in New Zealand.
Mauao also marks the entrance to Tauranga’s harbour and the port has become the largest cruise tour port destination in New Zealand. Watching luxury cruise ships sail in and out of Pilot Bay is a fun way to spend a summer’s evening.

Walking around base of Mount Maunganui, Tauranga, Bay of Plenty
The Mount is the colloquial name for Mount Maunganui, a relaxed beach town that occupies a peninsula at the southern end of Tauranga Harbour. The peninsula is actually a huge sandbar, with a sheltered bay on the inner harbour side and a magnificent surf beach on the ocean side.
At the very tip of the peninsula is a distinctive peak - Mauao - which rises to 230 metres above sea level. There's a choice of tracks leading to the summit, some more challenging than others. Huge views of the harbour, beach and Pacific Ocean make the effort totally worthwhile.
Mauao is an archaeological site of national significance, with a large pa (fort) site on top of the mountain. A Maori legend tells of Mauao trying to drag himself into the sea to escape the misery of an unrequited love; the result was his lonely position on the edge of the peninsula.
The Mount's glorious surf beach is patrolled by lifeguards throughout the summer and by volunteers for the rest of the year. The busiest section of the beach is close to Mauao; if you walk eastward toward Papamoa you'll find fewer people and more sand to call your own.
The beach's reputation as a surfing mecca recently moved up a level with the installation of an artificial reef that produces consistently perfect waves. The reef is located 250m offshore and sits 0.4m below the lowest tide level, so it's not visible above water. It has been designed to produce fast peeling, tubing, right-hand and left-hand waves, suitable for competent and experienced surfers.
As benefits a resort town by the sea, the Mount has a lively array of cafés, restaurants and shops, as well as naturally heated salt water pools. There is a Gourmet Night Market with an incredible selection of food and fresh produce straight from local farms. You'll also find plenty to keep you occupied in the outdoors too - big game fishing, dolphin tours, blokarting and dive trips are easy to organise. Accommodation options range from private holiday homes to sophisticated serviced apartments and hotels.
