Harper Award Speech REA 2013 Bob Jackson
Robert Jackson William Rainey Harper Award Speech
Professor Robert Jackson became the 12th recipient of the William Rainey Harper Award at the 2013 annual meeting of the Religious Education Association (USA) in Boston, Massachusetts.
“The William Rainey Harper Award was named after the first President of the University of Chicago, who was the founder of the Religious Education Association in 1903. It is presented to outstanding leaders whose public and scholarly work in other fields has made a significant impact on the theory and practice of religious education. Previous esteemed recipients include Marshall McLuhan, Elie Wiesel, Margaret Mead, Paolo Freire, James Fowler and Parker Palmer.”
The video, made with a small compact camera, contains most of Professor Jackson’s speech at the award ceremony on Saturday 9 November 2013. Not all of the poem recited at the end of the ceremony was recorded. The full text of the poem is printed below
Ultimate Question 1
Not yet four, you view my pic—aged seven,
Tin ribs, wide grin, on holiday at Skeg. 2
You peer intently, and now you whisper:
‘Did you love me then, Grandpa?’
Looking on, Wittgenstein falls silent.
Bruner and Vygotsky leave to revise
Their texts. Einstein smiles, and goes for a nap.
Dawkins, R. applies for ordination.
‘I couldn’t love you then, you weren’t yet born’,
I venture (nul points scored for repartee).
‘If you had been there, I would have loved you’;
(No better—nursery zaps PhD).
‘He isn’t ready for time’, says Piaget;
But I wasn’t ready for your question.
Love curves queries, and eclipses time.
As then, you are loved to infinity.
Robert Jackson, 22 March 2012
1 The poem was inspired by Bob’s grandson Sam, who asked the question 21 March 2012, when aged 3 years, 8 months.
2 ‘Tin ribs’ is an Ilkeston, Derbyshire, referring to the protruding ribs of someone so skinny as to invite playing a tune on them—as with the metal bars of a vibraphone. Skegness (known as Skeg or Skeggie) is a seaside resort in Lincolnshire, on the east coast of England, and a favourite summer holiday destination of many Ilkeston iron and coal workers in the 1950s.
(This poem is published in Robert Jackson and Dermot Killingley, Narrowboat Music: Poems of Life, Newcastle upon Tyne, Grevatt and Grevatt, 2015).

Queen City Gymnastics Boys - First Place Team
The Queen City Gymnastics Competitive Team is one of the largest and most successful programs in the country! Offered for boys ages 7-19, the program is geared to bring out the best in each gymnast, whether they are competing for fun or want to make the USA National Team.
Queen City Gymnastics boasts countless records and the one QCG is most proud of is our record of longevity and consistency. QCG has had countless State, Regional and National individual and team titles throughout all levels over the years. Of course, just as important as individual champions and team titles are college scholarships and the number of scholarship athletes from the QC boys competitive team.
Our coaching crew is unique in the gymnastics world. Selected for their genuine love of children as well as their technical expertise, you will not find better coaches anywhere in any sport. Saying it another way, if you are concerned about the character of the people who mentor your children, QCG is the clear best choice for your kids.
Athletes train in a 42,000 sqft (over one acre!) gymnastics training hall, the largest in the nation and perhaps the world. In addition to the apparatus and mats you can see, an effort to provide for your child’s safety goes far beyond what meets the eye and includes: six in-ground trampolines; 8 in-ground dismount pits; as well as 10,000 springs powering our 6-1/2 floor exercise floors! Ask any ‘veteran’ QCG Team parent who has had a chance to visit other USA gyms and they will confirm, you will not find a facility anywhere that even comes close to QCG!

Air-raid shelter
Air-raid shelters, also known as bomb shelters, are structures for the protection of non-combatants as well as combatants against enemy attacks from the air. They are similar to bunkers in many regards, although they are not designed to defend against ground attack (but many have been successfully used as defensive structures in such situations).
Prior to World War II, in May 1924, an Air Raid Precautions Committee was set up in the United Kingdom. For years, little progress was made with shelters because of the apparently irreconcilable conflict between the need to send the public underground for shelter and the need to keep them above ground for protection against gas attacks. In February 1936 the Home Secretary appointed a technical Committee on Structural Precautions against Air Attack. By November 1937, there had only been slow progress, because of a serious lack of data on which to base any design recommendations, and the Committee proposed that the Home Office should have its own department for research into structural precautions, rather than relying on research work done by the Bombing Test Committee to support the development of bomb design and strategy. This proposal was eventually implemented in January 1939.
