Lightship Spurn at Hull
Lightship Spurn at Hull
syma x5sc hull marina
Short flight over the marina catching the naval ship and the famous spurn lightship..
Ship of the Gods, complete sequence viewed from the interior of Hull Minster
Ship of The Gods.
Video, sound and light installation created for Hull Minster, Kingston upon Hull.
Commissioned by Absolutely Cultured for Urban Legends: Northern Lights 29 November - 2 December 2018.
Ship of the Gods was installed inside the Minster for 3 nights and then outside in Trinity Square on the final night. This video shows the entire sequence from various positions over the 4 nights, including outside in Trinity Square with the facade of Hull Minster in the background. Well over 40,000 people experienced the installation, most of this film was taken either before the Minster was open or during the quieter times towards the end of each night.
Ship of the Gods is inspired by the Norse myth of Skidbladnir, a magical shape-shifting vessel which was large enough to carry all the gods and their equipment yet could be folded up small enough to fit inside a pocket. Heinrich and Palmer connect this story with the landscapes of Norway and Hull's maritime history, re-imagining Skidbladnir through the forms of the Arctic Corsair, the Spurn Lightship and models found within Hull Maritime Museum and Hull and East Riding Museum.
Using film, 3D laser scanning technology, sound and lighting effects, the ghostly, ephemeral Ship of the Gods will sail and transform through the majestic space of Hull Minster.
Ship of the Gods was supported by Hull: Yorkshire's Maritime City, Hull City Council, Heritage Lottery Fund, Hull Culture and Leisure Ltd, Humber Museums Partnership and Arts Council England.

SUMMARY
=======
The Spurn Lightship (LV No. 12) is a lightvessel (i.e. a ship used as a lighthouse) currently anchored in Hull Marina in the British city of Kingston upon Hull, England. The ship was built in 1927 and served for 48 years as a navigation aid in the approaches of the Humber Estuary, where it was stationed 4 1⁄2 miles (7.2 km) east of Spurn Point.
On 15 April 1959, the lightship was driven ashore in the River Hull at Woodmansey, Yorkshire.The lightship was decommissioned in 1975 and bought/restored by Hull City Council in 1983 before being moved to Hull Marina as a museum in 1987. It is usually open between early April and end September. Access is free but has been at weekends only in the last year or so because of staff shortages. Wheelchair access is not possible. Sensible shoes must be worn and small children closely supervised.
The museum closed in June 2018, in preparation for the vessel being relocated in September, to facilitate a footbridge being constructed over the adjacent A63. It was expected that the museum would reopen in 2021 after undergoing conservation work and a relocation to a new position on the marina.

ROUND THE POINT - SPURN POINT
spurn point Spurn is a very unique place in the British Islands. Three and a half miles long and only fifty metres wide in places.
Extending out in to the Humber Estuary from the Yorkshire coast it has always had a big affect to the navigation of all vessels over the years. Help to some and a danger or hindrance to others. This alone makes Spurn a unique place.

SUMMARY
=======
The Maritime history of the United Kingdom involves events including shipping, ports, navigation, and seamen, as well as marine sciences, exploration, trade, and maritime themes in the arts from the creation of the kingdom of Great Britain as a united, sovereign state, on 1 May 1707 in accordance with the Treaty of Union, signed on 22 July 1706. Until the advent of air transport and the creation of the Channel Tunnel, marine transport was the only way of reaching the British Isles. For this reason, maritime trade and naval power have always had great importance.
Prior to the Acts of Union, 1707, the maritime history of the British Isles was largely dominated by that of England. (See Maritime history of England for more details.)
