Deputy Sheriff Mike Seversen Memorial Overlook Park , St Croix Falls, WI
The Overlook Park in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin was renamed on August 25, 2017 in recognition of Polk County Sheriff's Deputy Mike Seversen's timeless and noble service to the community, to Deputy Michael Seversen Memorial Overlook Park.
As the youngest son of Joe and Kitty Seversen, Mike grew up with a passion to help others. As a young man he began working at the Wisconsin Interstate Park and where his love for the outdoors and helping others grew. Over the years he selfishly served on the St. Croix Falls Fire Department, Luck Police Department, St. Croix Falls Police Department, Ski patrol, and the Polk County Sheriff's Department.
While on duty in 1991, in an effort to protect others he was shot, injuring his spinal cord and leaving him completely paralyzed. Mike's deep faith in God was evident in his persistent love for life, sense of humor, optimistic outlook, and care in serving his community. His physical limitations never stopped him from protecting and serving the community he loved. In his optimistic result, it became his mission to encourage and inspire others, especially those dealing with paralysis. For the next 23 years he continued to be active in the community, even while confined to his wheelchair. He remained a Polk County Deputy, and he spoke at D.A.R.E. events reminding young people that the choices they made would have significant impact on their lives and the lives of others. Mike was an active member of the St. Croix Falls planning commission and help to make Overlook Park a reality.
Michael J. Seversen was an active member of his community. Mike was a Lieutenant in the St. Croix Falls Fire Department, a Patrol Officer in the St. Croix Falls Police Department and Luck Police Department, a Park Ranger at Interstate Park, and a Deputy Sheriff with the Polk County Sheriff's Department.
Mike continued to serve with the Polk County Sheriff's Department, was active in local politics, and was a motivational speaker who had a passion to tell others they could overcome adversity.

Minnesota
Minnesota /mɪnɨˈsoʊtə/ is a U.S. state in the Midwestern United States. Minnesota was carved out of the eastern half of the Minnesota Territory and admitted to the Union as the 32nd state on May 11, 1858. Known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, the state's name comes from a Dakota word for clear water.
Minnesota is the 12th largest in area and the 21st most populous of the U.S. States. Nearly 60% of its residents live in the Minneapolis--Saint Paul metropolitan area (known as the Twin Cities), the center of transportation, business, industry, education, and government and home to an internationally known arts community. The remainder of the state consists of western prairies now given over to intensive agriculture; deciduous forests in the southeast, now cleared, farmed and settled; and the less populated North Woods, used for mining, forestry, and recreation.

Hot Air Balloon Ride - September 9, 2012
Stillwater Balloons took us for a ride in a giant hot air balloon that traveled over the St. Croix River valley (the border of Wisconsin and Minnesota), along with 14 other passengers. Much of the flight was 4,000 feet above the ground. What an amazing and peaceful experience it was to be floating like a cloud so high above the earth.

Drawing, Painting and Mixed Media Camp, ages 5-13
We will jump-start our creativity using pencils, colored pencils, pastels, watercolors, acrylics, markers, and oil pastels. Besides drawing and painting, we will design and create handcrafted animals and dolls, have some fun with fabrics, AND create some unique and interesting collage treasure boxes.
Instructor Suzanne Monson is a graphic designer and a professional creativity coach. Her dream is to be part of a community of creative pioneers who have lots of ideas for how to live dazzling, rich lives bursting with crazy fresh ways to have a life chock-full of meaning.
Fairy Tales: Knowing Ourselves and Nature Through Creative Dramatics, ages 8-13
We will learn from the natural world - through drama, improvisational play, model set design and construction, storytelling and performance. Group members will create their own fairy or toad houses/model sets and imagine characters in a story set in the natural spaces that surround us at Lamar Community Center. From these small worlds, we will further explore the roles and stories that emerge through mask making and puppet making, culminating in a co-created performance for family and friends on the final day of camp.
Instructor Jennifer Johnson is a theater and movement artist, educator and trainer who received her Bachelor of Arts in Theater from The College of Saint Benedict and her Master of Arts in Drama Therapy from New York University. Jen has taught all ages in many areas including self-expression, drama, improvisation and creative performance and storytelling.
This project is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts, and from matching funds generously and graciously contributed by local business and individual supporters of the arts. Creative Communities is a collaborative endeavor that is designed to inspire youth to achieve individual creativity and the love of hands on art making and design skills.
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Stephen Ray Vaughan (October 3, 1954 – August 27, 1990), known as Stevie Ray Vaughan, was an American musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. In spite of a short-lived mainstream career spanning seven years, he is widely considered one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of blues music, and one of the most important figures in the revival of blues in the 1980s. Allmusic describes him as a rocking powerhouse of a guitarist who gave blues a burst of momentum in the '80s, with influence still felt long after his tragic death.
Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Vaughan began playing guitar at the age of seven, inspired by his older brother Jimmie. In 1971, he dropped out of high school and moved to Austin the following year. He played gigs with numerous bands, earning a spot in Marc Benno's band, the Nightcrawlers, and later with Denny Freeman in the Cobras, with whom he continued to work through late 1977. He then formed his own group, Triple Threat Revue, before renaming the band Double Trouble after hiring drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon. He gained fame after his performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1982, and in 1983 his debut studio album, Texas Flood, charted at number 38. The ten-song album was a commercially successful release that sold over half-a-million copies. After achieving sobriety in late 1986, he headlined concert tours with Jeff Beck in 1989 and Joe Cocker in 1990 before his death in a helicopter crash on August 27, 1990, at the age of 35.

Words at War: Lifeline / Lend Lease Weapon for Victory / The Navy Hunts the CGR 3070
The United States Merchant Marine is the fleet of U.S. civilian-owned merchant vessels, operated by either the government or the private sector, that engage in commerce or transportation of goods and services in and out of the navigable waters of the United States. The Merchant Marine is responsible for transporting cargo and passengers during peace time. In time of war, the Merchant Marine is an auxiliary to the Navy, and can be called upon to deliver troops and supplies for the military.
Merchant mariners move cargo and passengers between nations and within the United States, operate and maintain deep-sea merchant ships, tugboats, towboats, ferries, dredges, excursion vessels, and other waterborne craft on the oceans, the Great Lakes, rivers, canals, harbors, and other waterways.
As of 2006, the United States merchant fleet numbered 465 ships[2] and approximately 100,000 members. Seven hundred ships owned by American interests but registered, or flagged, in other countries are not included in this number.
The federal government maintains fleets of merchant ships via organizations such as Military Sealift Command and the National Defense Reserve Fleet. In 2004, the federal government employed approximately 5% of all American water transportation workers.[3]
In the 19th and 20th centuries, various laws fundamentally changed the course of American merchant shipping. These laws put an end to common practices such as flogging and shanghaiing, and increased shipboard safety and living standards. The United States Merchant Marine is also governed by several international conventions to promote safety and prevent pollution.
The merchant marine is a civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Navy, but not a uniformed service, except in times of war when, in accordance with the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, mariners are considered military personnel. In a time of national emergency, the President can permanently seize any merchant marine vessel in return for fair compensation, or commandeer it for temporary use with no compensation if returned in reasonable condition.
Mariners are well represented in the visual arts. Merchant seaman Johnny Craig was already a working comic book artist before he joined up, but Ernie Schroeder would not start drawing comics until after returning home from World War II. Seaman Haskell Wexler won two Academy Awards, the latter for a biography of his shipmate Woody Guthrie.
Merchant sailors have also made a splash in the world of sport. Drew Bundini Brown was Muhammad Ali's assistant trainer and cornerman, and Joe Gold went made his fortune as the bodybuilding and fitness guru of Gold's Gym. In football, Dan Devine and Heisman Trophy winner Frank Sinkwich excelled. Seamen Jim Bagby, Jr. and Charlie Keller played in Major League Baseball. In track and field, seamen Cornelius Johnson and Jim Thorpe both won Olympic medals, though Thorpe did not get his until thirty years after his death.
Writers Richard Henry Dana, Jr., Ralph Ellison, Herman Melville, and Jack Vance and were merchant mariners, as were prominent members of the Beat movement: Allen Ginsberg, Herbert Huncke, Bob Kaufman, Jack Kerouac, and Dave Van Ronk. Peter Baynham, the coauthor of the film Borat, and Donn Pearce, who wrote the movie Cool Hand Luke, were formerly merchant mariners. Filmmaker Oliver Stone won multiple Academy Awards.
WWII-era merchant mariners played well-known television characters. The list includes Raymond Bailey (who played Milburn Drysdale on The Beverly Hillbillies); Peter Falk (who played the title character on Columbo); James Garner (who played Jim Rockford on The Rockford Files); Jack Lord (who played Steve McGarrett on the original Hawaii Five-0); Carroll O'Connor (who played Archie Bunker on All in the Family); Denver Pyle (who played Uncle Jesse Duke on The Dukes of Hazzard); and Clint Walker (who played Cheyenne Bodie on Cheyenne).
Songwriter and lyricist Jack Lawrence was a mariner during World War II and wrote the official United States Merchant Marine song, Heave Ho! My Lads, Heave Ho! while a young lieutenant stationed at Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, in 1943.
Writer/businessman Robert Kiyosaki claimed to have been a mariner.
Paul Teutul, Sr., the founder of Orange County Choppers and Orange County Ironworks, was a merchant mariner during the Vietnam War.
