Avalanche Control on US 2 (with Tanks)
The Washington State Department of Transportation uses several methods to protect drivers from avalanches along US 2 near Stevens Pass, including firing live artillery rounds at unstable snow to trigger avalanches while the roads are clear. Avalanche technicians usually fire the two M60 tanks near the summit at Stevens Pass between midnight and 6 a.m., but on Tuesday, January 09, 2013, WSDOT officials decided that the snow was unstable enough that US 2 needed to be shut down during the afternoon so that avalanche technicians could fire the tanks.

Snowboarding in Washington State
Snow Season 2015-2016 in Washington state, featuring footage from Steven's Pass, Crystal Mountain and Mount Baker Ski Area.
As home to a mountain that claims the most snowfall of any mountain in the United States, Washington is a world-class ski and snowboard destination. Often overlooked to Colorado or Utah because of it's distant location, Washington has some serious snow that simply can't be beat. The fantastic snow season this year means there is no reason not to get out to the slopes and find some fresh powderand it's not too late! Washington state has plenty of places to ride the lift, but here's the low down on my top three: Mount Baker Ski Area, Crystal Mountain Resort, and Steven's Pass.

Source Lake - Snow Lake Snowshoe | Washington State
Winter can be fantastic time to explore the back-country area near Alpental, next to Snoqualmie Pass.
The winter route to Source Lake on the south side of the valley is usually rather well defined and easily traversal by snowshoes or skis. From Source Lake, you can continue on to the top of the ridge overlooking Snow Lake, and just below Chair Peak. At about 3 miles, you'll find the slope tapers off as you enter a broad, tree-dotted meadow atop a broad saddle between Chair Peak and Snoqualmie Mountain. Stop and catch your breath here as enjoy the spectacular mountain vistas. Some of the route crosses avalanche hazard zones, so be sure to pay attention to the avalanche hazard rating for the day you plan to travel, and be properly equipped.
