Bringing Fairy Tales to life | Torben Iversen | TEDxOdense
Imagine bringing fairy tales to life. For 30 years, actor and director Torben Iversen has been wearing the hat of beloved author Hans Christian Andersen. Bringing stories to life through over 6500 performances. Torben has created hundreds of handsome princes, wicked witches, and an army of tin soldiers. Winner of honorary prizes, both in Denmark and internationally, for the first time, meet the man who lived a double life.
On one side, he is an actor, performer and artist, and on the other side he represents the most beloved children's stories. The naivety and innocence of the fairy-tale world meets the harsh reality of life. Is it time to grow up? Or should we remain childlike forever? Actor and director Torben Iversen is an engaging and humorous storyteller entrusted with the honour of portraying the poster-boy of Odense: Hans Christian Andersen. Torben is a great example of this year’s TEDxOdense theme My Other Side - after all, he has lived a double life for 30 years. During this time Torben has been wearing the hat of the beloved author and bringing his stories to life through over 6500 performances. On the one side, Torben is an actor, performer and artist, and on the other side he represents the most beloved children's stories. At TEDxOdense 2018, Torben will talk about the contrast between the innocence of the fairytale world and the harsh reality of life. Is it time to grow up? Or should we remain childlike forever? This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

Hans Christian Anderson - The Fir Tree
Hans Christian Andersen was born in the town of Odense, Denmark, on Tuesday, April 2, 1805. He died in Copenhagen, Denmark, August 4, 1875 (aged 70). A famed fairy tale writer, and poet noted for his children's stories. These include The Steadfast Tin Soldier, The Snow Queen, The Little Mermaid, Thumbelina, The Little Match Girl, and The Ugly Duckling. And many, many more. During his lifetime he was acclaimed for having delighted children worldwide, and was feted by royalty. His poetry and stories have been translated into more than 150 languages. They have inspired motion pictures, plays, ballets, and animated films.
Andersen's father, also Hans, considered himself related to nobility. His paternal grandmother had told his father that their family had in the past belonged to a higher social class, but investigations prove these stories unfounded. The family apparently was affiliated with Danish royalty, but through employment or trade. Today, speculation persists that Andersen may have been an illegitimate son of the royal family. In any case, King Frederick VI took a personal interest in him as a youth and paid for a part of his education. According to writer Rolf Dorset, Andersen's ancestry remains indeterminate. Hans Christian was forced to support himself. He worked as a weaver's apprentice and, later, for a tailor. At 14, he moved to Copenhagen to seek employment as an actor. Having an excellent soprano voice, he was accepted into the Royal Danish Theatre, but his voice soon changed. A colleague at the theatre told him that he considered Andersen a poet. Taking the suggestion seriously, he began to focus on writing.

About the fairy tale written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen
History :
The Emperor of China learns that one of the most beautiful things in his empire is the song of the nightingale. When he orders the nightingale brought to him, a kitchen maid (the only one at court who knows of its whereabouts) leads the court to a nearby forest, where the nightingale agrees to appear at court, where it remains as the Emperor's favorite. When the Emperor is given a bejeweled mechanical bird he loses interest in the real nightingale, who returns to the forest. The mechanical bird eventually breaks down; and the Emperor is taken deathly ill a few years later. The real nightingale learns of the Emperor's condition and returns to the palace; whereupon Death is so moved by the nightingale's song that he allows the Emperor to live.
