'of earth & sky' Regional Tour 2012
On the road with Bangarra.
From October 31 to 2 December, 2012, Bangarra tours regional centres in WA and NSW with the critically acclaimed production 'of earth & sky' Nominated for five Greenroom Awards and winner of three, 'of earth & sky' is an original and evocative fusion of dance and visual art inspired by old and new customs.
Commissioned by Bangarra's Artistic Director, Stephen Page, 'of earth & sky' features the work of celebrated choreographer Frances Rings, also one of Bangarra's artist-in-residence and emerging choreographer and Bangarra dancer Daniel Riley McKinley.
'Artefact' by Frances Rings breathes life back into Aboriginal objects that represent the continuum of practices that date back thousands of years. Each artefact is respected for the story it tells in reconnecting people with their traditional culture and heritage. Expressed through striking design and theatrical elements, 'Artefact' is a powerful dance theatre work.
'Riley' by Daniel Riley McKinley celebrates the life and work of the late Michael Riley, an acclaimed Aboriginal photographer and filmmaker, related to Daniel through Wiradjuri culture. Riley's cloud series of photographs with their dream-like beauty and digital manipulation are reflected in the movement and evocative soundscape for this exciting new work about the cultural resilience of Indigenous Australians.
At the heart of Bangarra's work is the inimitable soundscape and musical creativity of David Page, one of Australia's most outstanding Aboriginal composers and a Bangarra artist-in-residence. David is joined by fellow artist-in-residence Jacob Nash, whose inspiring visual designs enhance the sensory theatrical experience.
Having created the work 'Riley' in 2010, Daniel Riley McKinley will for the first time on this 2013 tour join the dancers on stage to perform his own work. Nominated this year for the Deadly's award as Dancer of the Year, Daniel will bring his athleticism and finely tuned creativity to 'Riley', and experience first-hand what he's asked of the dancers in performance.
Bangarra Dance Theatre's latest production 'of earth & sky' is impressive in its beauty and intricate detail.
Daily Telegraph, July 2010
Bangarra is a dance theatre company that visibly breathes. Lighting, soundscapes, imagery and movement come together to create a work of art that is both reflective and provocative.

SUMMARY
=======
Western Australia (abbreviated as WA) is a state occupying the entire western third of Australia. It is bounded by the Indian Ocean to the north and west, and the Southern Ocean to the south, the Northern Territory to the north-east and South Australia to the south-east. Western Australia is Australia's largest state, with a total land area of 2,529,875 square kilometres (976,790 sq mi), and the second-largest country subdivision in the world, surpassed only by Russia's Sakha Republic. The state has about 2.6 million inhabitants – around 11% of the national total – of whom the vast majority (92%) live in the south-west corner, 79% of the population living in the Perth area, leaving the remainder of the state sparsely populated.
The first European visitor to Western Australia was the Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog, who visited the Western Australian coast in 1616. The first European settlement of Western Australia occurred following the landing by Major Edmund Lockyer on 26 December 1826 of an expedition on behalf of the New South Wales colonial government. He established a convict-supported military garrison at King George III Sound, at present-day Albany, and on 21 January 1827 formally took possession of the western third of the continent for the British Crown. This was followed by the establishment of the Swan River Colony in 1829, including the site of the present-day capital, Perth.
York was the first inland settlement in Western Australia. Situated 97 kilometres (60 miles) east of Perth, it was settled on 16 September 1831.Western Australia achieved responsible government in 1890, and federated with the other British colonies in Australia in 1901. Today its economy mainly relies on mining, agriculture and tourism. The state produces 46% of Australia's exports. Western Australia is the second-largest iron ore producer in the world.
