STORYLINE
While the Ukrainian President arrives in Moscow on Tuesday for talks with his Russian counterpart on the settlement of a large debt with Russia's state-controlled gas giant Gazprom, residents in Kiev are preparing themselves for the worst scenario - a humiliating prospect of a natural gas cutoff.
Everything here is based on gas, said Yury Uvarov, one Kiev resident. So if there is no other alternative, we are completely dependant on Russia.
Russia's state-controlled gas supplier Gazprom gave neighbouring Ukraine a reprieve of a few hours in a debt dispute, but still said it would stop sending gas to the country of 47 (m) million on Tuesday if an agreement was not reached.
The conflict is being watched nervously in European Union countries that get Russian gas through pipelines crossing Ukraine, fearing a repeat of the supply disruptions that hit during January 2006 when Russia halted gas to Ukraine for several days amid a fierce argument over price hikes.
Since the New Year it is permanent tension. The same thing was last year and this one is the same, Uvarov said.
Anna, another Kiev resident, is more optimistic and hopes the government will be able to settle the matter.
Definitely this situation is not pleasant and I hope that it will not touch residential properties. But I think that the government will sort it out and they will find some consensus, she said.
Kiev resident Vladimir blames the issue on Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who according to British and Russian media, in the past held private business relations with Russia's gas trading industry.
I think that it is the result of Tymoshenko's intrigues. I will tell you why. All her life she spent sitting on a pipeline. But now they deprived her of it. That's why she is trying to return it back to her sphere, Vladimir said.
Facing a threatened cutoff on Tuesday morning, officials of OAO Gazprom and Ukraine's natural gas company Naftogaz negotiated for several hours on Monday.
Gazprom spokesman Sergei Kupriyanov said the talks had been adjourned to Tuesday, and that the cutoff time was pushed back to 6 p.m. local time (1500 GMT).
Gazprom says it would cut only Russian-origin gas, and that its contracts with customers further downstream would be fulfilled.
The contradictory statements could indicate that each side is trying to play the dispute for political advantage.

RUSSIA: MOSCOW: MINERS PROTEST OVER NON PAYMENT OF WAGES
Russian/Nat
More than 200 miners from Russia's far north converged on the capital to protest nonpayment of wages and call for the resignation of President Boris Yeltsin.
It was the latest in a series of protests by miners who have previously blocked vital rail links across Russia, gone on hunger strikes and taken their bosses hostage.
Moscow's Yaroslavsky station was the starting point on Thursday as hundreds of miners from the arctic region of Vorkhuta arrived in the Russian capital for a march on the government headquarters.
Just last week the Russian government agreed to immediately pay back wages to miners from the Kemerevo region after they blocked vital railway lines linking Siberia to western Russia.
But miners said on Thursday they were also outraged by reform plans which would close down mines and cut jobs.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
''We're fed up with these supposed reforms. If the bureaucrats here don't know what owing wages means -- and we haven't received ours for months -- then we'll show them.''
SUPER CAPTION: Vyacheslav Uvarov, Miner from Vorkhuta
Thursday's march got the backing of politicians from both ends of the spectrum.
Ultra-nationalist politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky was on hand to greet the miners, as were several Communist hard liners, including the leader of the Working Russia party, Viktor Anpilov.
On an unnaturally hot day for June in Moscow, the marchers donned their mining helmets and walked the 10-kilometre (6-mile) stretch to the White House, Russia's seat of government.
It was the support of workers from Vorkhuta in 1989 and 1991 which helped President Yeltsin in his fight for political survival.
On Thursday, their banners reflected a change in mood -- criticising Yeltsin for not providing more help in their hour of need.
Although the president's car drove past the White House, Yeltsin didn't stop to meet the miners.
They plan to hold a 24-hour vigil until their demands are met.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
''Our beloved President Yeltsin always likes to say he's a guarantor of the constitution. It's time for him to account for himself.''
SUPER CAPTION: Boris Markovkin, Protesting Miner
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
''We don't believe Yeltsin. On the other hand we are not calling for revolution. Communist, capitalist we don't care who is in power we just want our salaries paid and to live in peace.''
SUPER CAPTION: Sergei Anikin, Protesting Miner
In the past, such protests have drawn top officials out of the White House to talk to the crowds.
This time, no one in the government paid the miners a visit.
Given the economic crisis, and no indication yet that the I-M-F or the G-7 will bail out the Russian government, these miners may find their demands fall on deaf ears.

Ukrainian Ballet School Rejects Moscow Charity: Funds turned down over ties to pro-Putin ballerina
The Kyiv State Ballet School has rejected charity money from a fundraiser organized by Moscow Bolshoi Theatre’s prima ballerina Svetlana Zakharova because of her support of Putin.
The Kyiv school’s director Ivan Doroshenko said that Zakharova’s support of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s politics including his illegal annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula made her charity unwelcome underlining that ‘the money raised during this concert is not comparable to the thousands of dead, and the hundreds of thousands of square kilometers of lost territory’ referring to the conflict in east Ukraine.
Zakharova who is dancing in the Russian troupe was born in Ukraine but has since moved to Moscow to dance at the Bolshoi Theatre. She said she wanted to send money to the Kyiv ballet school where she began her career.
