BUILDER’S JOURNAL presents:
TRAVELING AS IT IS! – is a compilation of raw unedited video footages of my traveling adventure. My concept of traveling is riding public transportation, a road trip from home to a job destination or just a stroll around the neighborhood. You can hear, feel and see the “REAL” sights & sounds of a place or destination that are usually not tourist trail. There is a lot of street food to taste, adventures to encounter, lots of local people to meet and sometimes fellow travelers wanting to share their own personal experiences. ENJOYING LIFE - AS IT IS!
This is a video journal of our budget travel to Siem Reap, Cambodia featuring our visit to Victory gate and the Phimeanakas temple of the Angkor Wat Temple complex. The Royal Palace was built by King Suryavarman I and it was used from 11 to 16 century AD. It was transformed and restored several times. Since this is not a religious building, it was constructed mainly of perishable materials. Angkor Thom is not a temple, which is a very common misconception. As the name implies, Angkor meaning city and Thom meaning big.
The Angkor Temple complex is built over 400 sq. km of land area within the span of 7 centuries. It is the largest religious monument in the world. Siem Reap City is the gateway to Angkor Temple Complex, the most popular tourist destination in Cambodia. You can purchase a ticket to visit these magnificent man-made wonders at Angkor Enterprise building. This video features our tuk-tuk ride from our accommodation at Allis House to Angkor Enterprise showing some scenic tour around Siem Reap.
The fee for a 1(one) day tour of the Angkor Wat Temple complex is US$37 per visitor, for 3 day-visit is US$62, and for 7 day-visit is US$ 72. For a 1 (one) day tuk-tuk ride around the complex is US$ 25 plus tip and lunch meal of the driver (voluntary only). Some tourist rent bicycle or motorbikes. For a 1(one) day tour of Angkor, you’ll be visiting around 10 temples. And it’s super hot during the summer season so bring lots of water. The grandeur of these magnificent man-made wonders in real life is way beyond imagination.

Angkor Thom South Gate (late 12th-early 13th centuries)
Angkor Thom is quadrangle of defensive walls totaling 12 kilometers that once protected the Khmer capital of the same name (Angkor Thom means 'Great City'). Built in the late 12th and early 13th centuries by King Jayavarman VII, the walls are divided by two axes running north-south and east-west. A gateway lies at the end of each axis, four in total, facing the four cardinal directions. An additional gate, called the 'Gate of Victory', pierces the east wall just north of the 'Gate of the Dead', the east gate along the central axis. The significance of the additional gate is that it provided access to a terrace of the royal palace. As for the other gates, the two axes intersect at the center of the enclosed area where the Bayon temple sits.

The third temple stop is the Ka Teo Temple. It was the first temple built entirely out of sand stone in the 10/11th century. Yet, for unknown reasons the temple remains incomplete.

There are five identical gates to enter Angkor Thom, the capital City - five towering face gates - one for each cardinal
point, and the Victory Gate leading to the Royal Palace area.. The Victory Gate is on eastern wall of Angkor Thom and is
the second most used gateway into the Royal Square. Visitors entering or leaving Angkor Thom through this Gate will earn
an opportunity to see many significant vestiges, including the Ta Prohm, Ta Keo and Banteay Kdei.
Victory Gate was used by the Khmer kings of old upon their successful return from battle.

Angkor Thom is quadrangle of defensive walls totaling twelve kilometers that after protected the Khmer capital of a similar name (Angkor Thom means that 'Great City'). inbuilt the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries by King Jayavarman VII, the walls area unit divided by 2 axes running north-south and east-west. A entranceway lies at the top of every axis, four in total, facing the four cardinal directions. a further gate, known as the 'Gate of Victory', pierces the east wall simply north of the 'Gate of the Dead', the east gate on the central axis. the importance of the extra gate is that it provided access to a terrace of the royal palace. As for the opposite gates, the 2 axes see at the middle of the basined space wherever the Bayon temple sits.
The south gate of Angkor Thom is that the best preserved. it's approached from outside via a causeway that extends regarding fifty meters across a fosse. On either side of the causeway area unit railings designed with fifty four stone figures engaged within the performance of a notable Hindu story: the parable of the Churning of the Ocean. On the left facet of the fosse, fifty four 'devas' (guardian gods) pull the pinnacle of the snake 'Shesha' whereas on the correct facet fifty four 'asuras' (demon gods) pull the snake's tail within the wrong way. during this story, the body of the snake is wrapped round the central mountain—Mt. Meru—perhaps corresponding here to the Bayon temple at the middle of the location. In any case, the parable relates that because the Devas force the snake in one direction and therefore the gods pushed within the different, the ocean began to churn and precipitate the weather. By alternating back and forth, the ocean was 'milked', forming the planet and therefore the cosmos afresh.
The central tower of the stone gate is capped by 3 face-towers that face the four directions (the central tower faces each out and in). Below them at the bottom of the gate area unit 2 sets of elephant statues that flank the doorway on each side.Sitting on every elephant may be a figure of the god Indra carrying his usual weapon, the vadra (a lightning bolt). The gate itself is formed like AN turned 'U' and is supply at the highest (instead of arches, the builders of Angkor most popular to use corbelling to span distances). it's still potential to check wherever wood doors once fitted to the gate through openings within the stone.
There is some dialogue on the practicality of Angkor Thom as a full. If it had been a wall supposed for defense, it had been rather poorly designed, since there's obscurity on the wall for defenders to require refuge from incoming fireplace or shoot back from a secure location. this can be shocking since Angkor had been despoiled in 1177 by Champa invaders, and one will pronto imagine that its new King, Jayavarman VII would are involved with defense ought to the invaders come back.

Angkor Thom - Bayon Temple - Siem Reap - Cambodia 13/18
Siem Reap (Khmer: ក្រុងសៀមរាប) is the capital city of Siem Reap Province in northwestern Cambodia. It is a popular resort town and a gateway to the Angkor region.
Siem Reap has colonial and Chinese-style architecture in the Old French Quarter, and around the Old Market. In the city, there are museums, traditional Apsara dance performances, a Cambodian cultural village, souvenir and handicraft shops, silk farms, rice-paddies in the countryside, fishing villages and a bird sanctuary near the Tonle Sap Lake, and a vibrant, cosmopolitan drinking and dining scene.
Siem Reap today—being a popular tourist destination—has a large number of hotels, resorts, restaurants and businesses closely related to tourism. This is much owed to its proximity to the Angkor temples, the most popular tourist attraction in Cambodia.
Angkor Wat (Wat temple) is the central feature of the Angkor UNESCO World Heritage Site containing the magnificent remains of the Khmer civilization. Angkor Wat's rising series of five towers culminates in an impressive central tower that symbolizes mythical Mount Meru. Thousands of feet of wall space are covered with intricate carving depicting scenes from Hindu mythology. The most important are the Carved Bas reliefs of the Hindu narratives. They tell a story about gods fighting demons in order to reclaim order which can only be achieved by recovering the elixir of life known as amrita. The gods and demons must work together to release it and then battle to attain it.
Angkor Thom is an inner royal city built by Jayavarman VII, the Empire's famed 'Warrior King', at the end of the 12th century and is renowned for its temples, in particular the Bayon. Other notable sites are Baphuon, Phimeanakas, The Terrace of the Elephants and The Terrace of the Leper King. The city can be accessed through 5 city gates, one on each cardinal point and the Victory Gate on the eastern wall.
A number of significant temples are dotted around Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom within the Angkor Archaeological Park, including Ta Prohm, Preah Khan, Banteay Kdei, Phnom Bakheng, Ta Keo, Ta Som, East Mebon, Pre Rup and Neak Pean. These temples may be visited along the grand circuit or the small circuit routes. Other sites are the Roluos group of temples located to the east of Siem Reap.
