FLYING LEAP VINEYARDS IN ELGIN ARIZONA
FOUNDED IN 2010 BY TWO AIR FORCE PILOTS MARK BERES AND MARC MOELLER, THEY HAVE CATURED THE WINE SPIRIT WITH LOCATIONS IN ELGIN AZ, WILCOX AZ AND BISBEE AZ. STOP BY AND MEET TASTING ROOM MANAGER ROLF AS HE EDUCATES YOU ON THEIR PREMIUM WINES.
Catching Up With Kent Callaghan of Callaghan Vineyards in Elgin, Arizona
With over twenty years under his belt, Kent Callaghan is arguably the elder of the group, producing his first wine in 1990. I always enjoy speaking with Kent, his approach to winemaking straight forward and honest, and integrating lessons learned from the past. After a challenging 2012, punctuated by a freeze and hail that severely reduced yields for so many vintners in Elgin, Kent thinks the 2013 growing season may be one of finest vintages of his career, resulting in record yields.
In this first video, I asked Kent the explain the differences in soils between the three Arizona wine growing regions: Sonoita/Elgin, Wilcox and Verde Valley and how this translates into wine styles. His answer gets to the heart of structure and texture.
Finally, we tasted Tannat, a wine made from the namesake grape, and true to its name, containing perhaps the highest tannin levels of any red. Listen to our discussion about the wine........It will surprise you. This is a wine that you should have on your list to buy. By the way, Kent is sharing his Tannat at a wine dinner schedule for November 2nd at the Sonoita restaurant Overland Trout.

Arizona Wine Video Receives Gold Award in the AVA Digital Awards 2013 Competition
When most people think of Arizona, the vistas of the Grand Canyon and the red rocks of Sedona, Phoenix and Tucson may come to mind. However, with the number of bonded wineries growing and many more in the development phase, people everywhere are beginning to recognize Arizona as an upcoming wine producer.
In an effort to support the Arizona Wine Growers Association's (AWGA) mission, Phoenix based Media People International (MPI) produced a three-minute video entitled, Arizona Wine to increase awareness and promote the wine industry to the public.
The interview portions of the video were drawn from a longer, 22-minute MPI production for a grant proposal spearheaded by AWGA's President, Peggy Fiandaca: Five Communities Project sponsored by the Center for the Future of Arizona. The Arizona Wine Growers Association was selected as winner from more than 90 submittals, statewide.
Additional footage was gathered for the 3-minute video. MPI's goal was to offer interested viewers a brief overview of the burgeoning wine industry in the state.
The video received a Gold Award in the AVA Digital Awards 2013 competition.
There were approximately 2,000 entries in various categories from throughout the United States and several other countries in the AVA Awards competition.
The AVA Digital Awards is an international competition that recognizes outstanding work by creative professionals involved in the concept, direction, design and production of media that is part of the evolution of digital communication.
The AVA Digital Awards is administered and judged by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP). Over the past several years, AMCP's Advisory Board gave out over $85,000 in grants to support the efforts of its members. That money was used for marketing materials for homeless shelters, orphanages, day camps, community theaters and arts centers, and for programs for the elderly and disabled, childcare, and educational endeavors for the underprivileged.

GIANT BEEF RIBS and Brisket - AMERICAN FOOD BBQ at Little Miss BBQ in Phoenix, AZ!
Little Miss BBQ serves unbelievable BBQ meat in Phoenix!

Phoenix, Arizona, USA
For me, one of the ultimate American food meals to eat is awesome BBQ - when the meat is smoked perfectly so it slides off the bone, and the flavor is packed full of insane smokiness. My brother in law Derek had already been to Little Miss BBQ, but it was my first time to eat here, and I was so excited.
I arrived a little over an hour early to get in line, but luckily as soon as you pull up you get a number so that you don’t actually have to wait in line the entire time.
Scott and the entire crew at Little Miss BBQ are amazing, and you can immediately feel their passion and their genuine love for what they do and for the people they get to interact with everyday as a result of serving the best BBQ in Phoenix! Scott and his wife have an interesting and amazing grassroots history and start to their BBQ business. They first started making BBQ at home just because they loved doing it. Eventually they started competing in American BBQ competitions. At the beginning things didn’t go so well, but they kept going and perfecting their BBQ recipes and eventually started to win some of the competitions. Eventually they opened Little Miss BBQ, and it’s one of the best BBQ spots you’ll ever eat at.
So after getting the full tour of the restaurant and all the smoked meat, it was about time to open. You line up outside and the actual inside is quite small - most people either takeaway or eat outside.
I wanted to try a little of everything, so we got a giant tray of smoked BBQ meat including pork ribs, pulled pork, turkey, sausage, brisket, and beef ribs, with sides. Total price for the entire tray came to $92.70 - that was a lot of meat!
Thanks to my brother in law Derek for coming out to eat as well. We started with the beef ribs, and those are the best of the best. The meat falls apart and it was so insanely juicy and flavorful. The BBQ brisket will also blow you mind with its massive meaty flavor and juiciness. Finally my other top meat was the sausage, including jalapeno and a mix of meat and bacon.
Lastly, you have to eat your American food bbq feast with their famous pecan pie. And even though I’m not into sweets, a few bites at the end was amazing.
Little Miss BBQ is a phenomenal BBQ restaurant in Phoenix, Arizona. Not only will the quality and taste of the meat blow you away, but the passion of Scott and the entire crew are so genuine and so friendly, and that’s what makes it so good.
Thank you for watching this BBQ video!

AZ 83 North - The Arizona, Coronado Trails - Parker Canyon Lake (BEGIN) to Sonoita
Arizona State Route 83 is one of the most scenic and oldest highways in the state. The segment north of Sonoita was one of the first State Highways in Arizona to be designated in 1927, and was extended in 1966 facilitate the construction and use of Parker Canyon Lake. Although only the portion north of Sonoita is recognized by the state as a scenic highway, I believe the southern portion is actually more beautiful then the northern section, as you’ll see when the next portion comes out.
Part of this segment of AZ 83 roughly parallels the historic Arizona and Coronado Trails, although it is not signed as such. The route to Parker Canyon Lake is not widely used except by the Forest Service and people visiting the lake at the southern end of the highway. Because of that, the route south of Sonoita was actually not paved until the 1990s, and even then the portion from the lake to the Cochise-Santa Cruz County line wasn’t paved until the 2000s. Those are the first 5 miles or so shown today. The road is very tight, only 1.5 lanes wide with no center striping and multiple blind switchbacks. After passing the first cattle grate, we expand out to a narrow two lane - albeit newly paved and striped - road with small shoulders, steep drop offs and more blind corners. Because of the narrow shoulders and curves, you must remain vigilant for other people stuck and unable to get off the road, although the entire time I only saw and passed a handful of vehicles. Between Parker Canyon Lake and Cimarron Rd near Canelo, we actually straddle the top of the Canelo Hills (where Canelo got it’s name from) within the Huachuca Mountains. At Cimarron Rd - which serves as the backroad to Fort Huachuca and is, in fact, closed a couple miles past AZ 83 for base-traffic only - we enter in the ghost town of Canelo. Canelo never grew much past a few homes and a post office, which ultimately became a forest ranger building.
After winding through the hills past Canelo, we enter into the Arizona Wine Valley below and immediately cross into the town of Elgin, which while large in land size is home to a very small population of only 161 people. Here AZ 83 makes multiple 80-100° turns, replacing old dirt and ranch roads that ran between ranches and vineyards. It’s at this point that AZ 83 finally leaves it’s 35MPH speed limit and reaches it’s high of 55MPH before entering into the heart of Arizona’s Wine County: Sonoita.
AZ 83 parallels the much busier AZ 82 for a couple miles before making one last 90° turn to meet it at a two-way stop in the center of Sonoita. AZ 83 traffic must stop for AZ 82 traffic heading both east to AZ 90 and AZ 80 (old US 80) near Sierra Vista and Tombstone respectively, and heading west/southwest to Patagonia and ultimately Nogales where AZ 82 ends at I-19’s business loop (old US 89). It’s at this point where the Patagonia-Sonotia Scenic Road turns left off eastbound AZ 82 and onto northbound AZ 83 to I-10. We end the video here, and will pick up later.
Thanks for watching!

Rancho Rossa For Sale
Location
Rancho Rossa Vineyards is located in Elgin, AZ, a small rural town in southern Arizona which is often linked to the adjoining town of Sonoita. At just under 5,000’ in elevation, the region is considered semi-desert grasslands. Historically run as ranchland - with cattle ranching still a major local industry - the Sonoita/Elgin area has also developed into one of Arizona’s prime wine producing locations. The climate and soils are considered ideal for growing grapes. Though there are several developing wine-grape growing regions in Arizona, the Sonoita/Elgin area is the only one that holds the AVA (American Viticultural Area) designation. The local vineyards are active and draw tourists for wine tasting tours and festivals throughout the year.
Property Description
Vinyards/Winery
Rancho Rossa Vineyards is a productive, working vineyard/winery. With 17.02 deeded acres and an additional 293.92 acres of Arizona State Agricultural Land Lease, the property offers room to expand the existing 24± acres of planted vineyard operation. Rancho Rossa Vineyards is one of the largest family owned wineries in the Sonoita/Elgin and, by only processing the grapes grown on the property, is the only winery in the area that has always been 100% estate. Annual production reaches on average 1,100 cases of wine.
Constructed in 2004, the 4,017 square foot insulated metal building houses the winery, 1,000 square foot tasting room, and a large built-in cool room. Included in the tasting room are a serving/selling bar, a 300 gallon salt-water reef tank set into the wall behind the bar, two handicap-accessible restrooms, and plenty of extra room for sitting and visiting while enjoying a glass of wine. A large porch runs the width of the building in front of the tasting room, providing additional area for seating with beautiful views of the Mustang and Huachuca Mountains. All equipment involved with the growing, harvesting, producing, and marketing of the Rancho Rossa Vineyards wines are included with the purchase of the property. (See list of equipment included in brochure.)
Rancho Rossa Vineyards currently specializes in ultra-premium dry varietal wines. Current planted wine grape varieties include;

Built in 2002, the 2,556 square foot, 3 bedroom/2½ bath, frame and stucco home is spacious and comfortable. The open floor plan, with a wall of windows and sliding glass doors leading to the covered patio, allows for easy year-round entertaining. An impressive fireplace is central to the living area, providing warmth and ambiance in the cooler months, while a large built-in barbeque draws the entertainment outside to enjoy the views of surrounding mountains and cooling breezes of the summer evenings. Tucson (Arizona) - In Another Minute (Week 284)
- - Tucson, the second largest city in Arizona, is nestled in-between several mountain ranges in the Sonoran Desert. It may also have become my favorite quick getaway from Colorado - not only because my inspiring Brooklyn friend (and acupuncturist) Jess Grotfeldt lives there now and it's only a 90-minute flight from Denver, but also because it's so sunny and surrounded by amazing and diverse nature and other sights.
When I visited Jess this past week, we explored all around the outskirts of the city - even more than the city itself. So in this video, I'm including desert and cacti images from the Saguaro National Park and views of Tucson from Mount Lemmon and Catalina Highway in the Catalina Mountain Range. Please consider those images as a teaser for upcoming videos dedicated to those places since I already shot a lot more in those magnificent locations. But there's also enough of actual Tucson proper for you to get a taste, including the University of Arizona (what's with all the no weapons signs everywhere, including no nun-chucks?), the West University neighborhood and the Hotel Congress, where John Dillinger provoked the end of his criminal career when getting too involved with some firemen...
The most special experience of my time in Tucson was watching the Blood Moon, or Supermoon Lunar Eclipse, with Jess on her roof. What a transitional experience. I included a brief shot of the Blood Moon in this video, but you can watch the entire eclipse here: Blood Moon (Supermoon Lunar Eclipse) – In Another Minute (Week 283) -
I'd like to express a huge THANK YOU to Jess for being such an amazing host, wonderful friend and excellent filming partner in and around Tucson and on a road trip to the Sonoita-Elgin Wine Country, Bisbee and Tubac... more videos to come... Can't wait to share the time-lapse desert sunset...
