Caerphilly Castle Cardiff Wales in December 2018
The year is 2018, December, and we visit Caerphilly Castle, Cardiff Wales! We were staying at the Cardiff Premier Inn City Center and it was an easy commuter train ride to Caerphilly. From the train station, it was an easy 5 to 10 min walk to the castle. Check out the leaning tower! Looked like it was going to collapse. Wales' version of the leaning tower of PIsa.
From wiki:
Caerphilly Castle (Welsh: Castell Caerffili) is a medieval fortification in Caerphilly in South Wales. The castle was constructed by Gilbert de Clare in the 13th century as part of his campaign to conquer Glamorgan, and saw extensive fighting between Gilbert, his descendants, and the native Welsh rulers. Surrounded by extensive artificial lakes – considered by historian Allen Brown to be the most elaborate water defences in all Britain – it occupies around 30 acres (12 ha) and is the second largest castle in Britain.[1] It is famous for having introduced concentric castle defences to Britain and for its large gatehouses.
Gilbert began work on the castle in 1268 following his occupation of the north of Glamorgan, with the majority of the construction occurring over the next three years at a considerable cost. The project was opposed by Gilbert's Welsh rival Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, leading to the site being burnt in 1270 and taken over by royal officials in 1271. Despite these interruptions, Gilbert successfully completed the castle and took control of the region. The core of Caerphilly Castle, including the castle's luxurious accommodation, was built on what became a central island, surrounding by several artificial lakes, a design Gilbert probably derived from that at Kenilworth. The dams for these lakes were further fortified, and an island to the west provided additional protection. The concentric rings of walls inspired Edward I's castles in North Wales, and proved what historian Norman Pounds has termed a turning point in the history of the castle in Britain.[2]
The castle was attacked during the Madog ap Llywelyn revolt of 1294, the Llywelyn Bren uprising in 1316 and during the overthrow of Edward II in 1326–27. In the late 15th century, however, it fell into decline and by the 16th century the lakes had drained away and the walls were robbed of their stone. The Marquesses of Bute acquired the property in 1776 and under the third and fourth Marquesses extensive restoration took place. In 1950 the castle and grounds were given to the state and the water defences were re-flooded. In the 21st century, the Welsh heritage agency Cadw manages the site as a tourist attraction.
Enjoy!

Caerphilly Castle - Places To See In Wales, Episode1
We visit the largest castle in Wales in the first episode of our new series “Places To See In Wales” We’ll be taking a look at some famous and not so famous places around our home country of Wales.
Caerphilly Castle is a is medieval castle just north of Cardiff in South Wales. It was built in the 13th century by Gilbert de Clare. It was used as a base to conquer Glamorganshire and there was extensive fighting between Gilbert and the Welsh.
The castle is in the centre of the town and there are great views around the area. It costs £8.50 (Dec 18) to enter the castle and it’s big enough to spend a couple of hours there. #VisitWales
One of the most striking things about the castle is the leaning south east tower. It leans at 10 degrees, there is some debate as to whether the damage was caused during the English Civil War or as a result of subsidence when the castle fell into disrepair.
Caerphilly Castle has been used as a location for many TV and film productions including many episodes of Dr Who, Wolf Hall and Restoration with Robert Downey Jr.

Caerphilly is a town in South Wales, at the southern end of the Rhymney Valley. It is the largest town in Caerphilly. Historically it was in the county of Glamorgan, on the border with Monmouthshire.
Caerphilly is a commuter town for Cardiff and Newport, 7.5 miles (12 km) and 12 miles (19 km) away respectively, and is separated from the Cardiff suburbs of Lisvane and Rhiwbina by Caerphilly mountain and gives its name to Caerphilly cheese.
Caerphilly has three railway stations: Caerphilly at the southern end of the town near the shopping area, Aber in the western part of the town and Energlyn & Churchill Park railway station in the far western part of the town. All on the Rhymney Line serving Cardiff.
Caerphilly Castle (Welsh: Castell Caerffili) is a medieval fortification in Caerphilly in South Wales. The castle was constructed by Gilbert de Clare in the 13th century as part of his campaign to conquer Glamorgan, and saw extensive fighting between Gilbert and his descendants and the native Welsh rulers.

The dams for these lakes were further fortified, and an island to the west provided additional protection.
By 1947, when John Crichton-Stuart, the fifth marquess, inherited the castle, the Bute family had divested itself of most of its land in South Wales. John sold off the family's remaining property interests and in 1950 he gave Caerphilly Castle to the state.

Choose the High Street - Caerphilly Town Centre
Residents and visitors to Caerphilly county borough are being encouraged to 'Choose the High Street' as Caerphilly County Borough Council's Town Centre Management team launches a brand new campaign to raise awareness of the uniqueness of what is on offer in each of its town centres.
The initiative will focus on raising awareness of the importance of consumer choice, and work to encourage people to use their local high street more often.
While residents and visitors continue to display support for their local town centres, with reports revealing consistent footfall figures over the summer months in town centres across the county borough during the last two years, this campaign aims to build upon this success, and demonstrate to residents and visitors alike that each town centre has a unique reason for paying it a visit.
During summer 2013 (beginning of May through until end of September), Blackwood in particular saw a marked increase in the number of visitors to the town centre, from 715,229 in summer 2012 to 762,570 in summer 2013.
Cllr Ken James, Cabinet Member for Regeneration said, We remain committed to keeping our local economies thriving, and this new campaign aims to actively encourage all residents and indeed visitors to our county borough to utilise our unique town centre. I am pleased to see, through the consistent footfall figures, that residents continue to share the council's enthusiasm in supporting local traders and organisations, and the 'Choose the High Street' campaign aims to go one step further to demonstrate to residents and visitors that there are really unique reasons why they should choose to shop in our county borough's town centres.
The Choose the High Street campaign will also actively encourage new businesses to open in the town centres.
Simon and Trish Fowler, owners of Must Have Music and Impact, have recently relocated their business from The Market Place onto Blackwood High Street.
Simon explains, He at Must Have Music we are proud to be part of the Choose the High Street campaign. We have been working with Caerphilly council for the past few years, and have found that being part of their previous campaigns was very successful -- talking to the general public and relating to them how important it is to shop locally.
Having been established since May 2003, visitors to Must Have Music can soak up the friendly atmosphere, where we will always offer our customers genuine advice. It is our natural interest to make all of our customers welcome and provide them with a fantastic time while visiting us instore, he added.
Caerphilly County Borough Council also offers an online resource for budding entrepreneurs and traders -- the Retail Property Index -- which is an in-depth database for all vacant business premises in Bargoed, Blackwood, Caerphilly, Risca and Ystrad Mynach town centres. The online resource includes pictures of each property, along with listings of whether the property is available for lease or sale and the details of the property agent.
Cllr Ken James continued, Anyone with aspirations of starting up a business here in Caerphilly county borough should look no further than this excellent online resource. The Retail Property Index is a great way to check out what premises are available and find the perfect location in a quick, convenient way.
The Retail Property Index can be found at caerphillybusiness.info and the site also includes a handy search function that allows users to search for properties by location, town, lease or sale.
For further information on the 'Choose the High Street' campaign call the council's Town Centre Management team on 01443 866 213.
Ghost of Llancaiach Fawr Manor ~ Nelson~ South Wales
It is believe that there was probably an earlier dwelling on the site, either underneath the present house or possibly incorporated within the eastern end of the building.
It was previously thought that Llancaiach Fawr Manor predates the Acts of Union between Wales and England of 1536 and was mentioned in John Leland’s Itinerary of 1537.
However, tree ring dating carried out by the Time Team suggests a felling date for the roof timbers ( those which have sufficient sap wood left to test) of between 1548-1565, later than was originally thought.

Most Haunted Llancaiach Fawr Manor here
Previous residents, members of staff and many visitors can all testify to uncanny events. If there's one person who knows what it's like to live in a haunted house, it's Ed Williams.
He claims to have seen things, heard things and even smelled things which would make the rest of us chilled to the bone.
They include footsteps above his head while watching television, a tall man rushing past him at speed and the chilling results of using a ouija board.
Ed lived at Llancaiach Fawr Manor House, Caerphilly, from 1950-1985
It was his childhood home before the property was sold to what was then Rhymney Valley District Council who converted the imposing mid-16th century house into the Living History Museum that it is today.
I regularly heard four, distinct and loud footsteps above me when watching TV in the living room. If I had to guess, I would say male.
There was never any rhyme or reason to when the footsteps happened, but there were always four of them.
I never went to look for them - as far as I was concerned as long as they didn't bother me, I didn't bother them.
Ed once saw a tall man rushing past him at speed.
It was a summer evening, it wasn't dark and there was a function in the manor. I was helping to bring dishes back to the visitor centre.
As I was walking down the garden, a figure - I would definitely say Victorian with a stove pipe hat and a black cloak - ran very quickly past me. He was as plain as day to me.
The other staff remember me being visibly shaken by that visitation as it occurred on a bright day.
There was a rumour that circulated afterwards that I ran after him - I can assure you, I didn't!
When I was a teenager, and on reflection it wasn't the cleverest of things to do in this house, I decided to produce a ouija board.
We put the letters out, we put the glass in the centre - there were three of us - and we all put our fingers on the glass and said, 'Is there anyone there?' and the glass shot across the room and smashed into the fireplace.
Within 20 seconds we had put it all away and never attempted that again!
After the visitors had gone, I was taking my friend on a tour around the manor, and the front door, which is very heavy with a heavy latch, was closed.
When we were on the first floor, both of us heard the door open. When we came straight down there was no-one there.
General manager Diane Walker has had experiences which can't be explained - not that she spooks that easily mind you.
Lots of visitors who come here are sceptical about the house's reputation as being 'haunted'.
But when they give us feedback about their experiences, the most common comment is people saying they feel that they've been joined by a child spirit.
Lots of visitors and staff hear nosies which they describe as being childish, such as blowing raspberries and distant laughter. So could it really be the ghost of a child so many people talk about?
Recent research by the Friends of Llancaiach Fawr found evidence that a child did actually die at the house in Edwardian times by falling from a second storey window.
Diane adds: If you ask me the house is still active. Once we had this lady who came to the house and did a tour.
After it, she was pretty speechless. She had a new coat on, had never worn it before, and when she came back to the visitor centre, all the buttons from the coat were gone.
Gone?
Yes, totally gone.
And it's not just the house and garden that supply all of the unusual happenings - the staff say the visitor centre has an equal amount of intrigue.
