Old Photographs East Wemyss Fife Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of East Wemyss a village situated on the south coast of the Kingdom of Fife. This Scottish village was traditionally one of several coal mining communities along the south coast of Fife. The pit was its main employer for many years until it was closed in 1967 due to a fire which resulted in the deaths of nine men. East Wemyss is also home to the ruins of MacDuff's Castle, home to the MacDuff Earls of Fife, the most powerful family in Fife during the Middle Ages. Wemyss and District Tramways operated a tramway service between Leven and Kirkcaldy between 1906 and 1932. The Wemyss Tramway Order of 1905 authorised the construction of this tramway. It was financed by the Wemyss Coal Company, owned by Randolph Wemyss. The mainline of the tramway joined Leven, Methil, Buckhaven, East Wemyss, West Wemyss, Coaltown of Wemyss, Dysart and Kirkcaldy.

2018 Summer Drive To Balhousie Castle Perth Perthshire Scotland
Tour Scotland Summer travel video of a road trip drive through the city to the Regimental Headquarters and Museum of The Black Watch on ancestry visit to Perth, Perthshire. Balhousie Castle is located on Hay Street, originally a few hundred metres north of the medieval town, dates to 1631, though its origins are believed to go back a further three hundred years. It originally served as the seat of the Earls of Kinnoull, and stood within a walled enclosure on a terrace overlooking the North Inch Park. After falling into neglect in the early 19th century, the Castle was rebuilt, and extensively remodelled on a larger scale in 1862 in the Baronial style by the architect David Smart. In 1962, the Castle became the Regimental Headquarters and Museum of The Black Watch.
Fort George, Inverness, Scotland
A wet day at this huge fort and army barracks near Inverness. Wiki says Fort George (Gaelic: Dùn Deòrsa or An Gearastan, the latter meaning literally the garrison), is a large 18th-century fortress near Ardersier, to the north-east of Inverness in the Highland council area of Scotland. It was built to pacify the Scottish Highlands in the aftermath of the Jacobite rising of 1745, replacing a Fort George in Inverness constructed after the 1715 Jacobite rising to control the area. The current fortress has never been attacked and has remained in continuous use as a garrison.
The fortification is based on a star design; it remains virtually unaltered and nowadays is open to visitors with exhibits and facsimiles showing the fort's use at different periods, while still serving as army barracks.

Dunfermline Abbey
Before his death in 1329, Robert the Bruce made a donation to the Abbey. The money enabled it to rebuild the refectory, which had been destroyed by the English. The magnificent refectory hall was carried over two storeys of stone-vaulted undercrofts. The great west window is comparable with English examples which might seem strange to us considering the conflict between the two countries at the time. The political situation was evidently not a consideration for the builders.
The dining hall was slightly above the level of the cloister. Along each wall were tall windows except at the east end (furthest from the gatehouse), where the abbot's table, raised on a dais or platform, was lit by a larger window. Nearby was a pulpit, where a monk would read to his brethren while they ate in silence.
The undercrofts were only excavated in the 1920's. Before this, the lower levels were filled with earth, and you could walk over a lawn at the level of the monk's dining hall. Today, we access the refectory building at its lowest level, entering what was a stone-vaulted undercroft. Here there is a rare survival. It is still possible to make out incised lines, known as setting-out marks, which were made by the masons. A stair in the corner of the undercroft led to the hall, without giving access to the upper level of storage, which was probably accessed through the gatehouse.
Monastic kitchens were often placed some distance from the main abbey buildings to reduce the risk from fire. At Dunfermline, the kitchens were across the road from the refectory - the abbey's dining hall. Dunfermline's kitchens were unusually large, because they served both the refectory and the guesthouse. It is not completely clear how food made its way to the refectory. Food could have been carried across what is now Monastery Street into the two-storey undercroft, or more probably taken up a level to the floor above, through the gatehouse and into the refector Download link:
