Public wash-house Liverpool (1959) | BFI National Archive
Admire the industriousness of the Liverpool women who transport huge bundles of laundry to and from the local wash-house every week, crammed into old prams or balanced skilfully on their heads. The wash-house doubles as a social hub for the women, with a cafe and creche facilities. At the time of filming, this one in the Pontack Lane area was one of 13 remaining original public wash-houses in the city, although new more modernised buildings were under construction.Liverpool's last working wash-house closed in 1995.
The peppy documentary not only looks at the modern wash-house, but introduces the story of Kitty Wilkinson, 'the Saint of the Slums', who pioneered the public wash-house movement in Liverpool during the 1832 cholera epidemic. John Abbot Productions, who made the film, specialised in sponsored non-fiction films from the late 1950s to the late 1970s.

The Lost World Of Mitchell And Kenyon - Episode 1 - 3/6
The series showcases films made by Mitchell and Kenyon, lost for almost a century, rediscovered in 1994 and restored by the BFI. Most of the films are simply records of life, sport and culture at the beginning of the 20th century.
Dan Cruickshank presents and narrates the series; in addition, descendants of some of the people featured in the original films provide commentaries upon them; and (in what many critics considered the series' weakest feature) scenes from the life and work of filmmakers Sagar Mitchell and James Kenyon are dramatized in speeded-up form like incorrectly screened silent movies (although the actual film excerpts are shown at the correct speed).

One of Denis Mitchell's best remembered documentaries, made for the BBC in 1958 and transmitted in early 1959, it depicts working-class life in the back-to-backs of an unnamed northern city. Much of the shooting took place in Liverpool, but areas of Manchester, Salford and Stockport also make an appearance.

Happy Sea Side Holidays (1956) | BFI Britain on Film
Excerpt courtesy of Yorkshire Film Archive
This is a wonderful amateur film of family days out at various seaside resorts on the east coast of Yorkshire, Blackpool, Southport and Skegness, filmed in Kodachrome in 1956. All the joys that made these resorts such great attractions in the post-war period are on display, from paddling in the sea to puppet shows on the beach; and showing that rides for children don’t have to be of the giant theme park variety to be great fun.
This film is one of over sixty films made by amateur filmmaker Fred Brackenbury between 1948 and 1966. Fred was a member of Harrogate Cine Club, and made all the films with a 16 mm cine camera, virtually all in Kodachrome. He made films for Harrogate Council, and other documentaries on Yorkshire, some with a separate soundtrack with commentaries by his wife, Nora. They also had a love of flowers, hence their visit to the Southport Flower Show, which has been running since 1924, and continues to this day.
Yorkshire Film Archive collects, preserves, and shows film made in, or about Yorkshire. Our collections are non-fiction, dating from the 1890s to the present day, and providing a rich and visually compelling record of all aspects of lives, cultures, landscape, industries, major events and everyday activities, many of which are available to watch, free of charge, on our website.

Kitty Queen of the Washhouse
The play “KITTY: Queen of the Washhouse” is one that celebrates one of our own famed Liverpudlians, Kitty Wilkinson (1786–1860), whose community efforts for public hygiene helped stem the outbreak of cholera, leading to the opening of the first combined washhouse and public baths in the United Kingdom. A pioneer that many people know of but may not comprehend her dramatic life story. It will highlight the importance of working within a community in a time where more and more people are becoming socially isolated. Technologically we can connect with people on the other side of the world, yet we sometimes don't talk to our closest neighbours.

Liverpool In 1972 - Colour (1972)
This material is shot in colour.
Liverpool, Merseyside.
Various scenic high angle long shots of mostly residential areas of Liverpool - council estates, building blocks, etc. People drying washing on balconies, using them as storage, etc. More shots of the building blocks - both already inhabited and in construction. More shots of the rooftops showing large residential areas. Panning to building sites with new blocks being built. More shots showing children's playgrounds, traffic on roads around, the buildings, dirty walls with various graffiti on etc. One of the graffiti reads 'Black Power is Cool' another 'Black Power O.K.' Woman is seen looking through the window, zoom out to show a new brick building covered in graffiti. Zoom in to several windows and balconies showing people looking and back to show barbed wire around buildings, racist and other graffiti, some using explicit language, etc. It looks as if there were some race related incidents in the area so that barbed wire needed to be put up.
