This piece first broadcast on 19 Sept 2012. Televised on UK's regional television BBC1 West Midlands. Programme (Program) -- Midlands Today.
A City of Industry
The end of the Middle Ages saw Coventry's influence decline. During the reign of Queen Victoria (1837 to 1901) the city's fortunes revived. The Herbert's displays capture the essence of this important time in Coventry's development as a modern city.
For most of the Victorian period two industries dominated in Coventry: ribbon weaving and watch making. Both are well represented in the History Gallery through products and tools of the trades.
Alongside great wealth there existed great poverty, typified by the slums in the city's courts. The Herbert provides a glimpse into the lives of Coventry's people -- rich and poor -- at one of the most exciting times in the it's its history.
