Get Involved - Horsham district businesses and their local community

Horsham District Council, working in partnership with Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce and Jim Pirrie Ltd, has launched an initiative to encourage local businesses to get involved with community events and activities as part of a broader rural economic development programme for Horsham district.

The campaign called “Get Involved” aims to show how businesses that make time to engage with their local communities can benefit personally, raise their business profiles and enhance their performance.

As part of the initiative, a ground-breaking documentary film has been made featuring cases studies of businesses throughout the district who have thrived as a result of taking part in events run by the council, schools, markets and charities, in their own communities.

It is planned that the film will be widely used in the council’s Rural Economic Development Programme by Community Partnerships, Parish Councils and the District Council as one of a series of tools to encourage businesses to take an active role in their community.
Cabinet Member for the Local Economy Cllr Gordon Lindsay commented:

“Our experience demonstrates that many local businesses have benefited by playing a part in the local community by, for example, participating in local festivals. If you don’t believe me watch this film.”

Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce Chairman Martin Spurrier was heavily involved in the production of the documentary film and commented:
“This was a unique opportunity to create material that can promote local communities and businesses. It was good to meet these busy people running businesses who make time to “get involved” and great that they wanted to share their experiences with others on film.”
Local companies who have already embraced the community initiative have said:
“I would say you are losing out if you don’t get involved with local projects, above all, it can be hugely rewarding” – Gyles Culver, The White Hart, Henfield.

“It makes people feel that they are part of your shop and part of your success. To me, the most important part is having a direct direct connection.” – Claire Denman, The Flower Shop, Pulborough.

The council commissioned West Sussex based one man film company The Business Film Company owned by Jim Pirrie to create the film.
