Weston-Super-Mare is a seaside town in North Somerst, on the west coast of England is a hotspot for beach-goers and clubers alike.

Located just 40 mins south west of Bristol, Weston-Super-Mare is an attractive option for those not wanting to travel too far for the beach.

In 2005, the pier at Weston-Super-Mare was destroyed by a huge fire, which devastated many residents, as it was a symbol of the town. Now, it has been completely rebuilt and offers many new facilities.

The drive from London takes around 3 to 3.5 hours and passes through a few counties on the way, such as Swindon.

Great Western Railway and CrossCountry Trains at Bristol Temple Meads on December 29th 2019

Last video filmed in 2019 was my 2nd visit to Bristol Temple Meads featuring Great Western Railway and CrossCountry Trains

On the day of filming services to South Wales between Newport and Cardiff Central was out of action for over a week due to Engineering works in preparation for Electrification which would be completed 3 days after filming and with electric services running from London Paddington to Cardiff Central commencing on January 6th.

It meant services were mostly cut back to Bristol Parkway or Bristol Temple Meads

Bristol Temple Meads first opened on August 31st 1840 as the western terminus of the original Great Western Railway.

The station name comes from a nearby Temple Church and was built on a viaduct above the floating harbour and the nearby River Avon.

Services first commenced to Bath today’s Bath Spa at the time of opening with it extending to Paddington on June 30th 1841 following the completion of Box Tunnel although the Bristol and Exeter Railway opened 2 weeks prior on June 14th. The next railway to open was the Bristol and Gloucester Railway on July 8th 1844.

The station itself Grade II Listed was extended twice first between 1871 and 1878 and again in 1930.

The original terminal platforms closed in 1965 to enable renumbering however like many rail lines some include the Bristol Harbour Railway, Portishead Line were closed between the period from 1964 and 1966 have been axed by Dr Beeching.

The original shed long since closed is now used for venues and other activities.

Today it’s served mainly by Great Western Railway and CrossCountry Trains with only a few occasional trains per day South Western Railway services from London Waterloo via Salisbury and Westbury which divide and join up at Salisbury with services to and from Exeter St Davids via the West of England Line

Great Western Railway Services from Paddington terminate mostly via Platforms 13 or 15 with a few services extended to Weston-super-Mare and a few trains per day to Penzance and Paignton serve here and also the terminus for services from Severn Beach and Avonmouth.

However all services such as Weymouth services from Gloucester, Portsmouth Harbour to Cardiff Central and others to Great Malvern, Worcester Foregate Street reverse here requiring turnaround times of between 5 - 7 minutes with the only exception of through services to Weston-super-Mare and Taunton originating from Bristol Parkway and Cardiff Central respectively.

Local services are served by Class 150s, 158s, 165 and 166 Turbos with the turbos having mostly moved from the Thames Valley area on the GWML with the only exceptions on the Marlow, Windsor, Greenford and Henley Branches as well as Basingstoke from Reading.

The Class 43 HSTs withdrawn from long distance services on GWR on May 18th and LNER on December 15th 2019 are still used by CrossCountry which the MK3 coaches had to be modified with sliding doors to meet the mobility standards. The only other example is Castle HSTs used for GWR between Cardiff Central and Penzance services.

Modifications were being carried out at Wabtec Works in Doncaster although at the time of filming on GWR of the 11 sets were being maintained for use only 9 were in service with the other 2 still be modified similar practice to Inter7city short sets being used by Scotrail.

CrossCountry services mostly originate from Plymouth or Paignton and occasional services from Penzance with some terminating here from Manchester Piccadilly which run furthest up to Edinburgh, Glasgow Central and Aberdeen via Birmingham New Street.

As for the station eventhough it may have mostly changed since opening however the originality of Isambard Kingdoms Brunel’s Great Western status is still retained even today.
