HOKKAIDO VLOG : STAYING AT JAPANESE TRADITIONAL INN WITH PRIVATE ONSEN
Follow me on my instagram for daily updates
Follow our itinerary
Day one
Asahidake Onsen Yukomanso Ryokan.
How to go there:
From Shin Chitose station we took shinkansen to Sapporo (change train) and took another train straight to Asahikawa Station.
We had a lunch break and continue our journey to Asahidake Mountain.
They provide shuttle bus from 1430 Yen
Bus no 66 from bus stop 9
Please check your timing carefully as the frequency of the bus is low.
We booked from Agoda, cost around USD 359 for 3 person (dinner and breakfast included)
Day two
Daisetsuzan Asahidake Ropeway
From our ryokan is around 20 mins walk but luckily the ryokan manager is kind enough to send us with his car.
From the ropeway entrance we took the same shuttle bus back to Asahikawa station. We had a lunch stop there, and instead of taking the train we actually took the bus back to Sapporo station. It’s slightly longer but it’s cheaper. So if you have the time, definitely opt for bus instead.
We paid 2060 Yen per person. You can buy ticket at counter or pay straight to the driver.
First day at Otaru we stayed at Grand Park Otaru
We booked from Indonesian travel app : Traveloka
Cost around Rp. 2.100.000 = 148 USD per night for 3 person (breakfast included)
Day 3
Nikka Whisky Distillery
Entrance is Free. Closed at 5pm
THE RYOKAN WITH PRIVATE ONSEN
Otaru Asarigawa Onsen Kourakuen
We booked from Japanichan
Cost around 100.000 Yen/night for 3 people because ryokan tends to charge per person. Price includes private onsen, private in room dining, and breakfast.

Volcanic Sand Bath Experience ★ ONLY in JAPAN
VOLCANIC SAND BATH? YES!! Welcome to Ibusuki, Kagoshima!
In this episode, John travels to Kagoshima prefecture on the bottom of Kyushu to visit this unique style of onsen. It's call “suna mushi onsen” (砂むし温泉) in Japan. This style of Volcanic Sand Bath is only in Ibusuki, Kagoshima.
There are several health benefits associated to suna mushi onsen.
★ Good for the skin
★ Improves blood circulation
★ Increases your metabolism
★ Relaxation
The sand is on average 50 to 55 degrees Celsius (~122 F) and that heat can be adjusted for children (cooler) -- or hotter for those who can take the heat.
The recommended time limit in the sand bath is 10 minutes although I like to stay under for 15 minutes. You can stay as long as you like but to be honest, you can't stay over 15-20 minutes because your skin and body just can't manage it.
After the sand bath, you rinse off, return to blue yukata robe and soak in an onsen if you like.
The whole experience is only 1080 yen.
A small towel is 120 yen. Lockers and a yukata are included.
Getting to Kagoshima:
Flight: I flew SKYMARK airlines for 9,800 yen but ANA and JAL also fly to Kagoshima from Tokyo as well as Osaka / Kansai.
Train:
Kagoshima is now linked by the Shinkansen like from Tokyo but it takes about 7-8 hours with a change of trains in either Hakata (Fukuoka).
Bus: There are night buses from Osaka, Fukuoka and Tokyo.
I recommend flying though.

Hot Springs for Snow Monkeys in Hell Valley | Snow Monkeys, Nature | PBS
Watch the full-length program at (US Only)
Japan's Jigokudani became a sensation when hot springs were constructed for the Hell Valley snow monkey troops. The monkeys get important help from the hot springs in the valley, fed by warm volcanic waters, but their survival is a communal effort in a complex society of rank and privilege where each knows their place. Snow Monkeys airs Wednesday, April 23 at 8 p.m. (ET) on PBS (check local listings).
Japanese Public Bathing Exposed: The Naked Truth 日本の銭湯と熊鍋 ★ ONLY in JAPAN #25
New Japanese Bath & Onsen Episode here:
Inside Tokyo's Bath Houses: Behind the Scenes
So, getting naked with a bunch of strangers isn't your thing, eh?
Maybe after watching this, it will be! Not only are Japanese baths and hot springs therapeutic, they're heavenly on the body and a part of Japan that shouldn't be missed.
I don't think I can ever go back to western bathing again! In this episode, John explores some of the reasons behind the concept of public bathing in Japan.
There are sento and onsen.
Sento are public baths that can be found in many neighborhoods.
Onsen are naturally occuring hot springs with geothermaically heated water full of minerals. It's also where you'll find some of Japan most traditional resorts.
Shyness and nudity:
Japanese are known for being shy, but at the bath, most are comfortable in their nudity. Why?
John asks a Japanese neighbor who is 94 years old. Mr. Seiichi has an answer to almost everything!
There's a phrase in Japanese that explains some of it:
Hadaka no tsukiai (裸の付き合い)
It basically means we're all the same when we're naked. It's a part of any open relationship with friends or in business, going to the bath is a place where you literally can't hide anything!
John starts this episode at a local sento in Tokyo's Edogawa ward.
It's called Take no Yu 竹の湯 and is located in Shinozaki 篠崎, 20 minutes from central Tokyo.
It's been operating since the 1950's but patrons have been decreasing annually since the 1990s because most younger people stay home and take a dip in their private baths. The culture is changing in Japan. Youth are just too busy to visit the sento and many old local sentos are going out of business because of it.
Tokyo is loaded with many fantastic and historical public baths! Definitely check one out when you visit. It's one place where you can experince all-out Japan!
We also take a trip to one of Japan's famous onsen resort towns, Minakami in neighboring Gunma prefecture.
Takaragawa Onsen 宝川温泉 is a foreign friendly place where you can soak in baths outside in the snow and get a very traditional meal.
Prices:
Sento Entry (Tokyo): 480 yen
Towel: 120 Yen (soap and shampoo sometimes provided for free)
Onsen Stay: Takaragawa Onsen (1 night / 2 meals): 14,800 yen / rates depend on time of year and room. Travel is separate.
