Thornbury is a market town and civil parish in South Gloucestershire, England, about 12 miles (19 km) north of Bristol. It had a population of 12,063 at the 2011 Census.Thornbury is a Britain in Bloom award-winning town, with its own competition, Thornbury in Bloom. Suburbs include Morton and Thornbury Park. The civil parish includes the hamlet of Milbury Heath.
here is evidence of human activity in the Thornbury area in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, but evidence of the Roman presence is limited to the Thornbury hoard, of 11,460 Roman coins dating from AD 260–348, found in 2004 during the digging for a fishpond. The earliest documentary evidence of a village at Thornbyrig dates from the end of the 9th century. Domesday Book noted a manor of Turneberie belonging to William the Conqueror's consort, Matilda of Flanders, with 103 residents.
Thornbury was once the terminus of a Midland Railway (later LMS) branch line from Yate on the Bristol to Gloucester main line, with intermediate stations at Iron Acton and Tytherington. It lost its passenger services in June 1944 but lived on as a goods route, also serving quarries at Tytherington. The site of Thornbury railway station and the line have been redeveloped into a supermarket, a housing estate, a bypass road and a long footpath. Further relics of the line can be seen at Tytherington Quarry to the east of the town. There are plans to reopen the line to Yate via Tytherington and Iron Acton and possibly restore services to Gloucester and Bristol.
Thornbury had a market held in the high street and the market hall. It moved to Rock Street in 1911 but closed in the late 1990s, being partly replaced by a smaller market in a car park near the United Reformed Church. The older site has been redeveloped as a community centre called Turnberrie's; the older community centre, at 'the Chantry' in Castle Street remains in active use. The old market hall is now a clothes shop.
Thornbury's coat of arms combines the arms of four families important to its history: Attwells, Howard, Clare and Stafford. John Attwells bequeathed £500 for the establishment of a free school that merged with the grammar school in 1879. The Attwells arms was later adopted as the badge for the grammar school. The other three families held the manor at Thornbury over several centuries, with the Latin motto Decus Sabrinae Vallis (Jewel of the Severn Vale).
Thornbury has a high street, a shopping centre (St Mary's Centre), two supermarkets and many smaller shops. The town has seven places of worship: St Mary's Church, Christ the King Catholic Church, the Methodist Church, the United Reformed Church, St Paul's Church, and the Hackett and Thornbury Baptist churches. On the outskirts at Lower Morton stands an independent evangelical church, Morton Baptist Church.

Another card shop opens in Thornbury [Bristol / South Gloucestershire]
In St Mary's Way, Thornbury (part of the St Mary Centre shopping complex) a card shop is being opened a short distance from the site of a (discount) card shop business that failed earlier in the year, and directly opposite an existing shop (which is part of a High Street chain). At the other end of St Mary's Way (just visible) is a newsagents's which has a large selection of cards too. The new shop takes over a larger unit which was also vacated earlier in the year with the closing of a pound shop. It would not be my idea of a sensible location for such a business. Let's see what happens ...

At least 6,000 homes in the South West escaped deadly gas incidents in the last year
• One in six homes in the South West have been found to have an unsafe gas appliance
• Bristol was the most dangerous area in the region with one in five homes being found unsafe, followed by Gloucestershire (one in six homes unsafe), Plymouth (one in seven homes unsafe) Bournemouth (one in seven homes unsafe), Swindon (one in seven homes unsafe) and Southampton (one in 13 homes unsafe).
• 10,586 engineers are based in the region and are supporting Gas Safety Week (15 – 21 Sept)
Watch our video to see firsthand the tragic consequences that can unfold if you don’t have your gas appliances checked regularly by a Gas Safe engineer
To mark the start of Gas Safety Week (15 – 21 September), new research released today has revealed at least 6,000 homes across the South West have escaped deadly gas incidents, such as explosions, fires and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, in the last year. 1
The research carried out among Gas Safe registered engineers revealed that over half (57 per cent) found a dangerous gas boiler, cooker or fire in a customer’s home in the last year that needed turning off immediately. Around half (45 per cent) of these dangerous appliances were attributed to the fact that people had failed to get their gas appliance regularly serviced and had been left in a poor state.2
Gas Safe Register has inspected 14,436 homes in the South West in the past four years and found unsafe gas appliances lurking in one in six homes. Bristol was the most dangerous area in the region with one in five homes being found unsafe, followed by Gloucestershire (one in six homes unsafe), Plymouth (one in seven homes unsafe), Bournemouth (one in seven homes unsafe), Swindon (one in seven homes unsafe) and Southampton (one in 13 homes unsafe).3
In addition, Wales and West Utilities found over 5,400 unsafe gas appliances at emergency callouts attended in just the last year across the region.4
10,586 registered engineers across the South West are tirelessly working to keep the public safe and reduce the number of unsafe homes – many of which are caused by people failing to get their gas appliances safety checked by registered engineers.
Last year, Gas Safe Register launched the first ever interactive gas map - StayGasSafe.co.uk - which tells people how safe or unsafe their area is when it comes to gas by simply entering their post code. People can also sign up to a free gas safety check reminder service which will alert them when their gas appliances need checking.
This year Gas Safe Register, local registered engineers and local Fire and Rescue Services will be visiting Cabot Circus, Bristol on Friday 19th September as part of a regional tour during Gas Safety Week- to remind people of the importance of getting regular safety checks on all gas appliances.
Watch our video to hear from Max Schenker who lost his 31-year-old brother, Robert to carbon monoxide poisoning. A series of easily avoidable instances resulted in tragedy- highlighting the importance of making sure your gas appliances as checked by a Gas Safe engineer.
