Exploring Durham with Hotel Indigo
We were recently invited spend a weekend exploring the historic northern city of Durham with Hotel Indigo Durham. We managed to cramp loads into our time there and visited the UNESCO World Heritage Cathedral and Open Treasures exhibition. We also visited the Palace Green Library and the Castle (unfortunately couldn't go in though). We also took a boat trip on the River Wear and enjoyed an Afternoon tea at the Garden Gate Cafe.
We also spent two glorious nights at the Hotel Indigo Durham which is in a listed building, the Old Shire Hall. So many beautiful features and ornate staircase and the most amazing roll top bath.
We also popped into Durhams smallest Gin bar called Tin of Sardines - I recommend you visit if your in the area.
Had such a fantastic time and please note we were invited and guests of the Hotel Indigo but our experience is 100% our own.

George Hinchliffe & Nick Browning Shimmy Like My Sister Kate, Tricity Vogue's Ukulele Cabaret
George Hinchliffe of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain sings some of his Grandfather's songs a-capella, before performing I wish I could shimmy like my sister Kate accompanied by Nick Browning on bass, at Tricity Vogue's Ukulele Cabaret, Albany Deptford, on Wednesday 23 October 2011.
The Beatles - Shimmy Like Kate (1962)
I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate; often simply Sister Kate, is an up-tempo jazz dance song, written by Clarence Williams and Armand Piron, and published in 1919. It is variously believed to be based on a bawdy tune by Louis Armstrong or transcribed from a version performed by Anna Jones and Fats Waller..
The lyrics of the song are narrated first person by Kate's sister, who sings about Kate's impressive dancing skill and her wish to be able to emulate it. She laments that she's not quite up to date, but believes that dancing like Sister Kate will rectify this, and she will be able to impress all the boys in the neighborhood like her sister.
Over the years this song has been performed and recorded by many artists, including Frances Faye and Rusty Warren, a 1959 version by Shel Silverstein, The Olympics in 1960 (released as Shimmy Like Kate), the Red Onion Band, and a beat version by The Remo Four in 1964. It was recorded live by The Beatles in 1962, and appears on Live! at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany; 1962. The song arrived in the 1960s and 1970s folk scene thanks to Dave Van Ronk (recording it twice on In the Tradition and on Dave Van Ronk and the Ragtime Jug Stompers) and Jim Kweskin, who made it part of a Sister Kate's Night Out medley on his Relax Your Mind album with Mel Lyman and Fritz Richmond. In 1967, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band included it in on their eponymous The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (album).
The song was featured in an episode of the Carol Burnett Show (Episode 7.6) in 1973.
David Bowie used to team this song with an updated version of the Flares 1960 doo-wop song Foot Stompin' during the (1974) Diamond Dogs tour, as heard on the compilation Rarest One Bowie. Guitarist Carlos Alomar blessed the update with a riff that became Bowie's hit Fame, cowritten with John Lennon. Judith Durham recorded a version for her album, Judith Durham and The Hottest Band in Town (1974).
The song was also featured in an episode of All in the Family during the show's final (1978) season, in which Edith and Stephanie plan to sing the song for a talent show at Stephanie's school.
On their self-titled 2004 debut album, the Ditty Bops also covered the song as did The Livin' Blues, a 60s Dutch blues band.
A rare video footage of the song with Cécile McLorin Salvant from 2014 brought life to the song on the internet amongst the young jazz-generation.
A version of the song can be heard in the background of the season 4 finale of Boardwalk Empire.
A passage from the song is used in the poem Interview, written by Vijay Seshadri.

The Definitive 11Foot8 Bridge Crash Compilation
A 10 minute compilation of all crashes uploaded between 2008 and 2016 by 11foot8.com, copyright Jürgen Henn
FAQ
What is the location of the 11foot8 bridge?
201 Gregson St in Durham, NC (intersection with Peabody St)
Why is the bridge so low?
This train trestle is about 100 years old. At the time when it was built, there were no standards for minimum clearance.
How often do trucks crash into the bridge?
On average, about once a month a truck gets visibly damaged at the bridge. However, every day I see trucks that trip the overheight warning lights, stop and turn into the side street.
Why don’t they fix it?
Depends on who “they” are and on what “fix” means. The North Carolina Railroad Company owns the train trestle, and their concern is primarily with keeping the trains running and keeping them running safely. So their concern is mainly with reducing the impact of the truck crashes on the actual structure of the train trestle. As far as they are concerned, they solved that problem by installing the crash beam.
The city of Durham has installed “low clearance” signs on each of the 3 blocks leading up to the trestle (Gregson is a one-way road). There is an “overheight when flashing” sign with flashing lights that are triggered by vehicles that are too tall. Several blocks ahead of the trestle the speed limit is 25 MPH. The folks from the city planning department said that they made an effort to prevent accidents.
The North Carolina Dept. of Transportation maintains the road, but not the signage. I suspect they have much bigger problems to deal with statewide than this bridge.
Is the clearance signage accurate?
The clearance signage displays a maximum safe clearance – and yes, in that sense it is accurate. The actual clearance of the crash beam right in front of the trestle is 11 feet 10.8 inches, which gives it a 2.8 inch safety margin. The MUTCD allows for a maximum of 3 inches difference between the signage and the actual clearance.
Metric, please!
Would this situation be better if the signage were metric? Well … take a look at his website: 2m40.com (Warning: French. Metric)
For the convenience of our metric-only audience, here are the measurements we’re talking about in meters:
11foot8 (11 feet 8 inches) = 3.556 meters
11 feet 10.8 inches = 3.627 meters
Safety margin: 7.1 cm (at the crest of the road)
Can’t the road be lowered?
That would be prohibitively expensive because a sewer main runs just a few feet below the road bed. That sewer main also dates back about a hundred years and, again, at the time there were no real standards for minimum clearance for railroad underpasses.
Can’t the bridge be raised?
Here, too, the question is who would want to pay the millions of dollars to raise the tracks a couple of feet? To accomplish this, the grade of the tracks would have to changed on both sides of the trestle, probably for several miles. That would require rebuilding all trestles in Durham. And NS would have to shut down this busy track for months. I don’t think they are interested in that idea.
Is the signeage inadequate?
The signeage is pretty good. Large signs alert driver to the low clearance several blocks before the bridge. Overheight vehicles trip a light switch that turns on flashing warning lights.right at the bridge.
Should there be more signeage?
It’s hard to see how more “low-clearance” signs will significantly improve the situation. But maybe a different kind of signeage would get the driver’s attention.
Could they install a low-clearance bar?
A low clearance bar is a bar suspended by chains ahead of the bridge. Overheight vehicles hit that bar first and the noise alerts the driver to to the problem. I understand that this approach has been successful in other places, but it’s not practical here. There are many overheight trucks that have to be able to drive right up to the bridge and turn onto Peabody St. in order to deliver supplies to several restaurants. Making Peabody St inaccessible from Gregson St would make the restaurant owners and the delivery drivers very unhappy.
Why are they using yellow flashing lights?
Warning lights have to be yellow according to the NC traffic laws.
Are the drivers stupid?
No idea. They certainly seem distracted and the rental truck drivers are also probably inexperienced.
Will insurance cover the damages?
Most truck rental insurance policies specifically exclude overhead damage from coverage. However, a good auto insurance or liability insurance might pick up the tab. Check with your agent. Or even better – don’t hit the bridge!

THE CAN OPENER BRIDGE - 11foot8.com Bridge
This is the famous 11 foot 8 inch can opener bridge. This bridge has become famous due to all media coverage it gets from all the truck accidents it creates, it’s so famous it even has it’s own Youtube channel that has been running for nearly 10 years.
The bridge used to be known as the Norfolk Southern–Gregson Street Overpass, it has been renamed to the 11 foot 8 Bridge, but most know it by it’s nickname “the can opener”.
Jürgen Henn installed a home security system in his home and used a webcam to start recording the crashes, since he started he has recorded 129 crashes in just under 10 years, as of Feb 2018.
Thanks for watching.

[Newsa] Julie Walters
For a channel that was set up to be groundbreaking, innovative and alternative, Channel 4 devotes a fair chunk of its scheduling to programmes that are the very definition of “comfort TV”.
At the weekends in particular you’re never too far away from a stunning, lingering shot of unspoilt British countryside – the only variation seems to be the celebrity gasping at it and the mode of transport they’ve chosen to get there.
After Prunella Scales and Timothy West’s Great Canal Journeys and Jeremy Paxman’s 4×4-propelled river odysseys it was time to let the train take the strain in Britain’s Coastal Railways with Julie Walters, as the actress, comedian and fully fledged national treasure took the West Highland line in the first of four programmes.
And she did prove an engaging travelling companion, bringing a down-to-earth, self-deprecating tone to the proceedings and even gently taking the mickey out of the celebrity travelogue format (“Has Michael Portillo been on this train? I can smell Lynx.”)
The peg was her fascination with Britain’s coastlines – “growing up in Birmingham was such a landlocked existence” – which will mean gorgeous vistas of cliffs and islands as well as tiny locomotives meandering through lush landscapes. And in the highlands and islands of western Scotland they had found a cameraman’s dream for the opener.
It was clear she loved the whole experience and the chance to meet the local characters encountered on the way. Stop-offs included spy training at a former SOE school in Arisaig, a storyteller’s bothy on Skye, Highland cattle wrangling (“watch Alanna, she has attitude”) and meeting a fellow Brummie who is now a fisherman and seafood merchant in Mallaig.
Business as usual, then – a perfect way to unwind as Monday morning loomed and a vision of rail travel in Britain free from unexplained delays, blocked toilets and sardine-packed commuters.
I’m sure the other trips will be equally enjoyable. But the commissioning editors at Channel 4 and elsewhere might reflect that some of the best travel TV (Michael Palin’s early journeys, for instance) has involved a bit more chaos and unpredictability.

Pauline Quirke joins in with Academy students’ Lots of Laughs Challenge this Red Nose Day
Actress Pauline Quirke has challenged the young performing arts students at her nationwide Pauline Quirke Academies to join her in taking part in PQA’s Lots of Laughs Challenge, raising money for Comic Relief this Red Nose Day (15 March).
Pauline, who has played many comedy roles, including the much-loved Sharon in Birds of a Feather, participated in the challenge alongside PQA staff including her husband, Steve Sheen (PQA’s Chairman). Their son, actor Charlie Quirke, also joined in with the challenge too.
The students have honed the skills for delivering their favourite jokes during their weekly Comedy & Drama lessons and then filmed them for a video montage as part of their Film & Television lessons. Montages are also live on the Academy Facebook pages.
The students hope that in return for giving their online audience ‘Lots of Laughs’, those watching the videos will donate to Comic Relief, with the aim of raising money to help put a smile on others’ faces. The JustGiving link to donate can be found here:
Pauline Quirke said: “We are keen to support Comic Relief and the invaluable work it carries out, including so many projects helping children and young people. Our PQA students have really got stuck into the Lots of Laughs Challenge - take a moment to watch their Academy videos this Red Nose Day…there are some really great jokes in there!”
Comic Relief is a UK charity which aims to create a just world, free from poverty. Since launching in the 1980s, it has raised over £1 billion to help people living tough lives across the UK and Africa.
PQA is a weekend performing arts Academy providing tuition for children and young people from 4-18 years. Students spend three hours with us rotating through hour-long sessions in Comedy & Drama, Musical Theatre and Film & Television. Students are split into groups according to their age and are taught by specialist teachers. PQA was started by actress Pauline Quirke and her producer husband Steve Sheen in 2007 with an Academy in their local town Beaconsfield. This proved to be a very successful venture and led to further openings over the years now totalling just over 170 Academies nationwide.
