The Central Japan Railway Company (東海旅客鉄道株式会社, Tōkai Ryokaku Tetsudō Kabushiki-gaisha) is the main railway company operating in the Chūbu (Nagoya) region of central Japan. It is officially abbreviated in English as JR Central and in Japanese as JR Tōkai (JR東海). Tōkai is a reference to the geographical region in which the company chiefly operates.
JR Central's operational hub is Nagoya Station and the company's administrative headquarters are located in the JR Central Towers in Nakamura-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. The busiest railway line operated by JR Central is the Tōkaidō Main Line between Atami Station and Maibara Station. The company also operates the Tōkaidō Shinkansen between Tokyo Station and Shin-Ōsaka Station. Additionally it is responsible for the Chūō Shinkansen—a proposed maglev service between Tokyo Station (or Shinagawa Station) and Ōsaka Station (or Shin-Ōsaka Station), of which a short demonstration section has been built. Currently, the company is conducting demonstrations of its shinkansen to railway officials from different countries in the effort to market bullet train technology overseas.JR Central is Japan's most profitable and highest throughput high-speed-rail operator, carrying 138 million high-speed-rail passengers in 2009, considerably more than the world's largest airline. Japan recorded a total of 289 million high-speed-rail passengers in 2009.
Japan Resumes Tests On Its Experimental Maglev Train
Japan resumed high speed tests on its experimental magnetic levitation train, or maglev, on Thursday (August 29) for the first time in 2 years and after nearly doubling the lenght of the test tracks to 42.8 kilometers (26.5 miles) long.
Floating on powerful superconducting magnets 8 centimeters (3.1 inches) above its track, the linear motor train rack top speeds of up to 581 kilometer per hour (361 miles per hour).
That would cut a 360 kilometre (224 mile) trip between Tokyo and Nagoya by one hour to about 40 minutes.
Due to open in 2027 at a cost of 5.1 trillion yen ($61.4 billion), the maglev rail will be extended again to the western Japanese city of Osaka by 2045.
Developer Central Japan Railway Company, known locally as JR Tokai, said the design of the train has been upgraded to enhance aerodynamics and cabin space from its previous version.
This is a totally new high-speed railway technology, independently developed in Japan, Japanese transport minister Akihiro Ota said in the celebration event held before the test.
This train reminds us of how proud we are as a technology powerhouse and gives us great hopes for the future, he added.
The super high-speed train will take JR Tokai as long as 30 years to recoup the cost of constructing a line between Tokyo and Nagoya.
The company, which already operates conventional high-speed rail services between the two cities, is pushing ahead with the maglev project even as a shrinking population and competition from new discount airlines erodes demand for rail travel.
Overseas, the company, as part of a Japanese consortium, is promoting the technology for a proposed route on the the U.S. east coast connecting Washington and Boston.

JR Gotemba Line driver's view from Gotemba to Numazu in Japan
The Gotemba Line is a railway line in Japan operated by the Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central). It connects Kōzu Station in Odawara to Numazu via Gotemba.
The present-day Gotemba Line was built as part of the original route of the Tōkaidō Main Line connecting Tokyo with Osaka. The portion between Kōzu and Numazu was opened on February 1, 1889.
The line took an indirect route between Kōzu and Numazu in order to avoid the
Hakone Mountains, which affected the potential journey time between Tokyo and
Osaka. A more direct route had been planned as early as 1909, but technical
difficulties delayed the completion of the Tanna Tunnel until December 1, 1934.
With the opening of the tunnel, the route of the Tōkaidō Main Line became via
Atami Station, leaving the section between Kōzu Station and Numazu Station as a spur line renamed as the Gotemba Line.

Shinkansen is the term used to describe bullet trains in Japan and it literally means “new trunk line.” Sometimes referred to as “super express” services in English, Shinkansen trains mostly run on dedicated tracks and stop only at major stations. They are operated by Japan Railways (JR) Group companies and feature some of the fastest trains in the world, traveling at up to 320 kilometers per hour.
Shinkansen high-speed train,N700A ,285 kph
Bullet train services in Japan began in 1964 when the Tokaido Shinkansen Line inaugurated services between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, just in time for the Tokyo Olympics. The original 0 Series trains had white livery and snub noses and could complete the run in 3 hours and 10 minutes, a huge improvement from 6 hours and 30 minutes with conventional trains. Today, the latest N700 trains used for Nozomi express services travel the 500 kilometers in only 2 hours, 25 minutes.
Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai) said Friday it will raise the maximum speed of the Nozomi bullet train service to 285 kph between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka stations next year thanks to advances in braking technology.
JR Tokai said the change was made possible by the introduction of the N700A, a new type of shinkansen that boasts an improved braking system. The faster runs will link the nation’s two biggest business centers in two hours and 22 minutes, cutting three minutes off the current travel time, JR Tokai said.

JR Tokai, which operates the Tokaido Shinkansen Line, usually caps the Nozomi’s top speed to 270 kph but will raise the limit for 37 runs per day starting March 14. It will be the first time the speed limit has been raised on the line since March 1992.
JR Tokai said the change was made possible by the introduction of the N700A, a new type of shinkansen that boasts an improved braking system. The faster runs will link the nation’s two biggest business centers in two hours and 22 minutes, cutting three minutes off the current travel time, JR Tokai said.
West Japan Railway Co., operator of the Sanyo Shinkansen Line, which links Shin-Osaka Station to Hakata Station over in Fukuoka, said the fastest Nozomi will do the Tokyo-Hakata run in four hours and 47 minutes, also three minutes faster.
The Shinkansen known in English as the bullet train, is a network of high-speed railway lines in Japan. Initially built to connect distant Japanese regions with Tokyo, the capital, in order to aid economic growth and development, beyond long-distance travel some sections around the largest metropolitan areas are used as a commuter rail network. It is operated by five Japan Railways Group companies.
Starting with the Tōkaidō Shinkansen (515.4 km, 320.3 mi) in 1964, the network has expanded to currently consist of 2,764.6 km (1,717.8 mi) of lines with maximum speeds of 240–320 km/h (150–200 mph), 283.5 km (176.2 mi) of Mini-Shinkansen lines with a maximum speed of 130 km/h (80 mph), and 10.3 km (6.4 mi) of spur lines with Shinkansen services. The network presently links most major cities on the islands of Honshu and Kyushu, and Hakodate on northern island of Hokkaido, with an extension to Sapporo under construction and scheduled to commence in March 2031. The maximum operating speed is 320 km/h (200 mph) (on a 387.5 km section of the Tōhoku Shinkansen). Test runs have reached 443 km/h (275 mph) for conventional rail in 1996, and up to a world record 603 km/h (375 mph) for SCMaglev trains in April 2015.
The original Tōkaidō Shinkansen, connecting Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, Japan’s three largest cities, is the world's busiest high-speed rail line. In the one-year period preceding March 2017, it carried 159 million passengers, and since its opening more than five decades ago, it has transported more than 5.6 billion total passengers The service on the line operates much larger trains and at higher frequency than most other high speed lines in the world. At peak times, the line carries up to thirteen trains per hour in each direction with sixteen cars each (1,323-seat capacity and occasionally additional standing passengers) with a minimum headway of three minutes between trains.

At peak times, the line carries up to thirteen trains per hour in each direction with sixteen cars each (1,323-seat capacity and occasionally additional standing passengers) with a minimum headway of three minutes between trains.
Japan's Shinkansen network had the highest annual passenger ridership (a maximum of 353 million in 2007) of any high-speed rail network until 2011, when the Chinese high-speed railway network surpassed it at 370 million passengers annually, reaching over 1.7 billion annual passengers in 2017,though the total cumulative passengers, at over 10 billion, is still larger. While the Shinkansen network has been expanding, Japan's declining population is expected to cause ridership to decline over time. The recent expansion in tourism has boosted ridership marginally.
The E6 series (E6系) is a Japanese Shinkansen high-speed train type operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East) on Komachi mini-shinkansen services on the Tohoku Shinkansen and Akita Shinkansen from Tokyo to Akita since 16 March 2013. A pre-series set was delivered in June 2010 for extensive testing, with 23 full-production sets delivered between November 2012 and spring 2014.
The 7-car E6 series trains operate in conjunction with E5 series or H5 series (since March 2016) 10-car trains, initially on just four return services daily from 16 March 2013.[2] They replaced all of the previous E3 series trains on Komachi services by 15 March 2014.

Which is the fastest Shinkansen?
Nozomi (のぞみ, Wish) is the fastest train service running on the Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen lines in Japan. The service stops at only the largest stations, and along the stretch between Shin-Osaka and Hakata, Nozomi services using N700 series equipment reach speeds of 300 km/h (186 mph).
How fast is the Shinkansen bullet train?
Japan's high speed bullet trains, also known as Shinkansen trains, offer visitors an experience like no other with speeds reaching up to 320 km/hr! The main Shinkansen lines with bullet trains include Tokaido, Sanyo, Tohoku, Joetsu, Nagano and Kyushu.
