Workation is said to be a portmanteau of work and vacation, and it suggests enjoying a holiday while working. Nishi-Awa is one of ideal workation areas, and we would like you to come here and enjoy workation.
1) 50 Best Places to Travel in 2018
Iya Valley in Nishi-Awa is the only place in Japan which was featured in Travel + Leisure 50 best place to travel in 2018.
It says, known as the Tibet of Japan, the remote Iya Valley is tucked away in the mountainous interior of Shikoku, the least visited of the country's four main islands, but tourism has been increasing with hosting World Rafting Championship in 2017,setting up new Zip lines and hiking trails, and upgrading accommodations in the area's traditional thatched-roof farmhouses.
Chiiori is the most luxurious; the property also maintains an excellent portfolio of more affordable options.
2) Hidden Hamlet untouched for 1000 years
Nishi-Awa steep slope farm villages were registered as Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) in 3/2018.
The villages were developed on steep ridges of mountains. They have maintained their traditional agricultural systems for more than 1000 years and cultivated mixed grains, buckwheats, tubers and roots for generations. You can interact with locals and feel their lifestyles and dietary culture by staying in the farmhouse or an old townhouse. You can also enjoy strolling Udatsu Old Street which thrived by indigo-dyed products and trying river spots including rafting in the Yoshino river.
3) Comfortable ICT working environment and facilities
More than ten official co-working spaces are located in Nishi-Awa
from townspace to mountain side. Minimum level urban function is available (stores, restaurants, hospitals, etc.)
Wi-Fi and printers are available and some of them accompany accommodation spaces. Projectors and screens are available for teleconference. One user held Internet lectures to their college students while he was away.
4) Satellite offices hire employees from large cities and overseas
In January 2019, there are 15 companies holding satellite offices in Nishi-Awa. With the relaxed atmosphere, natural landscape and local interaction, some city residents and foreign workers relocated themselves to the satellite offices in Nishi-Awa.
5) Positive support from municipal government to business
Not only the subsidies but also non-financial support from government is available.
・Connecting business with local companies
・Introducing talented local workers to satellite office (a satellite
company hires all local employees by the municipal government
introduction)--reducing the hiring costs of companies.

About Tokushima City's Awa Odori
This Tokushima festival features folkdances performed to welcome the souls of ancestors
During the Obon season in mid August, Awa Odori are held each place in Tokushima prefecture and Tokushima City's Awa Odori is the most famous of many dance festivals held even across Japan. Awa is the former name for Tokushima Prefecture and Odori means dance.
From August 12th to15th, spectators and dancers come to Tokushima in the thousands to see this Fool's Dance whose origins date back 400 years (Edo period). This nickname comes from the lyrics to a common dance song, which translates as follows: Fools dance and fools watch, Both are fools alike so, Why not dance? .
Although some performance are takes place during the daytime, the main spectacle takes place between 18:00 and 22:30, when groups of dancers called ren perform in blocked off streets of downtown Tokushima. Ranging from amateurs gathered just days before the event, to veterans who practice year round, the ren come from Tokushima, other parts of Japan and as far away as the United States.
The groups dance through designated spectator areas (演舞場,enbujo) in a procession. They go,playing traditional musical instruments. Ren distinguish themselves with difficult variations and colorful uniforms, though the dance steps are simple. Women wear cotton robes called yukata, while men wear happi (shorter yukata over pants or shorts). Like the dance, these standards differ from group to group.
In the evening, Tokushima's city center shuts down and is turned into a large dance stage. There are seven different stage areas which are either free or paid seating. The paid stages are sure to see the professional groups, while the former will have more casual dancers as well. Typical festival flourish, such as food and game stalls, as well as more dancing, are held outside of the stage areas.
Visitors planning to see Awa Odori may have difficulty securing one of Tokushima City's hotels, as hotels are booked out months in advance. Many spectators have to stay some other place; options include nearby Naruto (40 minutes by train), Takamatsu (1 hour by train), or even Osaka (2.5 hours by car).
Tickets for the four reserved stage areas can be bought in advance or on the day. The tickets range between 800 and 2100 yen for a two hour block of performances (first block from 18:00 - 20:00 or second block from 20:30 - 22:30). The tickets can be purchased at convenience stores nationwide. Same day tickets are also sold by the tourist information center in front of Tokushima Station (10:00- 20:30) and outside each of the reserved stage (17:00 - 21:30) on festival nights.
Awa Odori museum is, Awa Odori Kaika
For visitors to Tokushima who miss the festival, the Awa Odori hall(Awa Odori Kaikan) offers you experience in watching Awa Odori demonstrations which are. held several times a day. In addition, the lower station of the ropeway leading up to Mount Bizan is located in the Awa Odori Kaikan building.

Japan's Biggest Dance Party: Awaodori Experience ★ ONLY in JAPAN
The world is full of amazing street parties, music festivals and carnivals! In Japan, there's this – the AWA ODORI. It's held annually in Tokushima and it's historically -- a big drunken dance party in the streets! That's right, Samurai were even banned from joining in 1671 because they were continually disgracing themselves. (It was for their own protection.) Tokushima is known for its love of dance and drinking, the jolliest place in Japan!
And this time, that's where John is -- TOKUSHIMA!
In this episode, we'll get a glimpse at this amazing street party and a few other attractions in the area.

Travelogue in Japan, Nikkō Utsunomiya Road, volume 48
Nikkō Utsunomiya Road
The road is the main access route for Nikkō, a popular getaway for tourists in the north of Tochigi. It connects directly to the Tōhoku Expressway which leads to the greater Tokyo area.
The road is officially designated as a bypass for National Route 119 (Utsunomiya Interchange to Nikkō Interchange) and National Route 120 (Nikkō Interchange to Kiyotaki Interchange). The road is designated for motor vehicles only. The design standard of the road is similar to most national expressways in Japan.
The first section of the road was opened to traffic in 1976 and the entire route was completed in 1981.
The Cedar Avenue of Nikkō (日光杉並木 Nikkō suginami-ki?) is a street in Japan lined with approximately 13,000 cryptomeria trees, known as Sugi, the national tree of Japan. Consisting of three parts converging on the city of Imaichi, the Cedar Avenue of Nikkō is 35.41 kilometers long[1] and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest tree-lined avenue in the world. The Cedar Avenue of Nikkō is the only cultural property designated by the Japanese Government as both a Special Historic Site and a Special Natural Monument.
Cedar Avenue of Nikkō
The cedar trees were planted approximately 400 years ago by Matsudaira Masatsuna, a feudal lord serving Tokugawa Ieyasu, who donated them to the Nikkō Tōshō-gū. This monumental project was begun around 1625 and required about 20 years to be completed. It is estimated that some 200,000 cedars were planted at this time.

Japan tour #8: Awaji Island
I went to the Awaji Island for my summer vacation.

The first place I visited was Otsuka International Museum of Art in Tokushima Pref. This museum is famous for a lot of replica of art works from all over the world.
My favorite and the only one hotel I stay in the Island is Hotel New Awaji Plaza Awajishima. The room, food, service...everything is really good quality! I highly recommend you to stay there if you are looking for a hotel in Awaji Island.
Iwaki Tourism Promotion Video - Hot spring
【How to enjoy the town of hot spring recommended by local students…】
Iwaki Yumoto Hot Spring has been loved as one of the three ancient springs along with Dogo Hot Spring and Arima Hot Spring for over 1300 years. Iwaki Yumoto has also an amusement facility called Spa Resort Hawaiians, where Japan’s first Hula Girls began their performance. The place is famous as a Hawaii of Tohoku area.
This Promotion Video (PV) is produced by New Generation Assistant (NGA) student members of Iwaki Meisei University. This PV tries to introduce this tourist site, Iwaki Yumoto town to you with a more relaxed and local viewpoint. We will focus on various spots around JR Yumoto Station.
【The back ground of this Iwaki Tourist PV production】
Iwaki Meisei University received an offer to make this PV from the Hotel Business Liaison Council & Iwaki Chamber of Commerce Industry. Then, the volunteer group members of NGA launched a project team named IMU Iwaki Activation Team to make PVs about Iwaki city. With a supervising editor, Mr. Hidemi Takahagi, a professional of video production from ifeels Inc, it took five months to complete this project. Totally, five PVs with five respective themes, “Night Views,” “Mountains,” “Sea”, “Hot Spring” and “Gourmet” were made.

You are dancing Awa dance throughout the city but, night view was also think unexpectedly beautiful.
Tokushima you are the river flows into the city, sea, mountain, are three of the river and I thought it was a city that are aligned to the compact.
Even just to drive by rent a car, I think that it becomes tourism.

The Oboke Gorge (Ōboke) has unusual geological strata, including a rudaceous schist formation designated as a natural monument. Oboke Gorge and neighboring Koboke Gorge a little ways downstream, are narrow, steep sided gorges near the entrance to the Iya Valley. Their names mean big dangerous steps and small dangerous steps as their jagged, rocky walls can be dangerous to navigate. Yoshino River has cut through the Shikoku Mountains over the ages, eroding crystalline schist into winding gorges with myriad shapes and forms, which almost look like marble statues.
The gorges are one of the leading outdoor destinations in Japan and are known for their beautiful natural scenery and for the variety of outdoor attractions.

■TripNotes
Spot1:Ruins of Takeda Castle
The ruins of Takeda Castle are located at the peak of Mt. Kojo in the city of Asago. On particularly foggy mornings, the base of the mountain becomes invisible and the castle seems to be floating in air. This mystical scene is where the nickname Castle in the Sky comes from and it has also appeared in the movie Kagemusha directed by Akira Kurosawa.
If you're lucky, you may be able to see the ruins floating in a sea of mist from the Ritsuunkyo viewing deck at the time of sunrise in the months of October and November.
Spot2:Arima Hot Springs
Arima Hot Springs are accessible from Kobe and Osaka city centers and are known as one of the three most famous hot springs in Japan. Experience the scene of traditional wooden buildings lined along the narrow streets and peaceful ambiance of the hot spring town. There are hot springs that you can visit on a day-return trip, but why not stay for a night and have a stroll through the town?
Climb the nearby Mount Rokko with the ropeway and take a nature walk in the sky.
Food:Kobe Beef
Hyogo is where the world-famous Japanese beef brand, Kobe Beef comes from.
Kobe Beef ranks among the top of many Japanese beef brands. Kobe Beef steak is highly recommended. Enjoy the beautifully presented, soft and finely textured meat that melts in your mouth.

Explore Regional Flavors Visiting the Hidden Village PartI
Japanese cuisine has been developing various unique food cultures by region depending on their climate and history. Because Japan has plentiful mountains and oceans as well as distinct four seasons, there are many food ingredients grown in the land, and it turn into local specialties called “Kyodo-ryori” dwelling local’s nature and culture, which has been passed down from generation to generation. With the blessing of nature, “Kyodo-ryori” carrying delicate but rich flavor, is presenting Japanese commitment to dish as well as their history and culture. In this program series, our reporters meet the locals and discover a traditional way of life and the local cuisine of the hidden village.
In Part I of the two-part series, writer Rebecca Milner visits a “hidden village” in the Nishi-Awa area of Tokushima prefecture, located in the center of Shikoku island. In this mountain village, called “Sora” (meaning “Sky” in Japanese), traditional soba meals and dishes using dried vegetables and game meat have been passed down through the generations.
The program introduces these time-tested dishes, along with local wisdom for life on a 45-degree slope.
We also introduce raclette cheese from Tokachi, Hokkaido, famous for dairy farming; and rice cake dishes from Ichinoseki, Iwate prefecture, where it is customary to eat rice cakes throughout the year.
