World’s Busiest Station: Shinjuku Station Tokyo | Giant Hubs | Episode 3 | Free Documentary
Giant Hubs Episode 3: A look behind the scenes of the world’s busiest station: Shinjuku Station!
Five separate train lines, almost three thousand passengers per minute and trains arriving every second. How can the people behind the scenes of the world’s busiest station overcome a traffic load like this every day?
The teams in this Giant Hub need a minute-by-minute precision, a constant control, a military discipline but at the same time always still a smile on their faces for the 3,6 million customers every day.
At 4:30 in the morning: The 200 doors to the world’s busiest station start to rise and they won´t close for the next twenty- one hours. This signals the start of the morning rush hour and requires a logistics process that is perfectly in sync.
Nobody knows this kind of challenge as good as Hidehiko Moriyama, he is the station master of the biggest train company of the city. His team are the eyes and ears of the entire station. Cutting-edge technology allows them to keep an eye on everything from behind the scenes.
When the day is almost over for some, another team is just about to start its shift. At night, everything happens at the same time. The teams work against the clock. The window in which there are no passengers or trains on the tracks is a mere three hours long.
Repairs and work on the tracks must not disrupt the traffic flow under any circumstances. This would cause too much chaos. So, before the first guest arrives back in the morning, any sign of construction work disappears completely. It’s as if nothing had happened.

Shibuya (渋谷) is one of the twenty-three city wards of Tokyo, but often refers to just the popular shopping and entertainment area found around Shibuya Station. In this regard, Shibuya is one of Tokyo's most colorful and busy districts, packed with shopping, dining and nightclubs serving swarms of visitors that come to the district everyday.
Shinjuku (新宿) is one of the 23 city wards of Tokyo, but the name commonly refers to just the large entertainment, business and shopping area around Shinjuku Station.
Shinjuku Station is the world's busiest railway station, handling more than two million passengers every day. It is served by about a dozen railway and subway lines, including the JR Yamanote Line. Shinjuku is also one of Tokyo's major stops for long-distance highway buses and city buses.

Steady-ish shots:
For those wondering, the stabilizer used is the Zhiyun Crane. It allowed me to capture scenes I normally wouldn't as I was walking from one place to another. It's not completely smooth though, as a lot of footage has some bounce if you pay attention. If I would have walked with a more ninja-like step, I probably could have cut it down somewhat.
People not staring:
The nice thing about the handheld stabilizer, is that it wasn't as obvious when I was filming, due to way I was holding it. People did look at the camera here and there, but not as much as if I would have used a tripod, or if I stuck my face behind the camera at all times. Depending on where I was, I would just hold the camera at stomach level and not look at the camera, so you wouldn't know I was filming. It probably looked like I was carrying my camera going from one place to the next as opposed to looking like I was actively filming.
Face masks:
Totally anecdotal, but I hear half the reason is to wear while sick to prevent spread of germs, half is to not get sick, and if a lady is wearing, it may be because she didn't feel like putting on makeup. Air quality is fine, no problem there.
Camera setup:
Sony a7sii with Sony 16-35mm f4, 24-240mm f3.5-5.6, and 55mm f1.8 lenses. Most is shot using the 16-35mm lens.

Subways In Japan Japanology
The Tokyo subway (東京の地下鉄 Tōkyō no chikatetsu) is a part of the extensive rapid transit system that consists of Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway in the Greater Tokyo area of Japan. While the subway system itself is largely within the city center, the lines extend far out via extensive through services onto suburban railway lines.

How to get from Narita Airport to Central Tokyo
#DistantLands #NaritaAirport #Tokyo
Wheels down, you have landed at Narita Airport your next step is to grab your bags, clear customs and then make your way to Tokyo. Narita airport is located about 60 kilometers east of Tokyo and the options for getting to from Narita to Tokyo are many and varied from Train, bus, taxi and even helicopter. For the first time visitor, the variety can seem a bit overwhelming. Depending on where your final destination is in Tokyo, one way may be more convenient than an other. Let us sort out the confusion.
Tokyo is a vast metropolitan area, with over 770 square miles to explore. Locals speak of Tokyo’s geography in terms of Train Lines. There’s a loop line around central Tokyo called the Yamanote Line. The neighborhoods on this line and the neighborhoods with in the loop are all considered downtown Tokyo. The Yamanote loop includes six stations the serve as Tokyo’s main connecting hubs: Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Tokyo, Shibuya, Shinagawa and Ueno stations. Anything outside the Yamanote loop is considered uptown or suburbia. This makes Tokyo’s downtown massive: the loop is 21.4 miles around.
All of this is important when considering transportation options from Narita Airport. One express train may be better for you than the other depending where in Tokyo you need to go.

With 179 stations, nine lines and over 2.3 billion users each year, the Tokyo Metro is the heart of Tokyo’s public transport system. This film goes behind the scenes to explore the mind-set, skill and technology behind its astonishing reliability and punctuality. The Tokyo Metro is so punctual that people set their watches by the arrival of the trains; if a train is more than a minute late, the driver has to make a personal apology. This film explores the reasons behind the Metro’s reputation for running on time, to reveal a long-established culture focused on avoiding failure through contingency planning for any event – from terrorism to earthquakes - and the introduction of new technology to improve safety and systematic preventative maintenance. However, we reveal the key to the Metro’s efficiency is exhaustive training for its station staff and drivers, who are trained to drive at precise speeds even if the technology fails.

How to take airport limousine bus - Haneda Airport (late night to Shinjuku/Hyatt Regency Tokyo)
Here's a quick tutorial on how to take the Airport Limousine Bus from Haneda Airport.
Upon exiting customs and enterting the arrival level exit, you can first get cash from the ATMs on the left (I recommend Seven Bank, which worked great with my Capital One 360 Debit Card, which didn't charge any ATM or transaction fees).
Then turn back to the right where you will see the bus ticket counter on the left. There will be a sign while you line up that will show you how much you can see how much your ticket will be based on your destination. You can also plan ahead here:
After getting your ticket, turn right (aka out), go past the main elevator into a hallway in the back with more elevators on both sides, and take those down to the ground level, where there will be signs for your bus.
Give the attendant your ticket, confirm with them your final destination (we were going to the Hyatt Regency Tokyo in Shinjuku, which was the last stop on our route, and we were also the last people left on the bus, since almost everyone else had gotten off at Shinjuku itself) and let them check your luggage.
Those arriving late at night: Our flight arrived at 22:30 at HND and we were able to make the last bus to the Hyatt Regency Tokyo (at 23:10) with about 10 minutes to spare (enough time for me to go back upstairs and make this video!).
If you miss that bus, the bus to Shinjuku West Station is your best bet, and leaves as late as 02:20. It's about a 15-20 minute walk from Shinjuku station to the Hyatt Regency.
So as long as you know where to go, you should be fine (though I'm not responsible if you don't!)

JR Ikebukuro Station, Ikebukuro District, Tokyo
JR Ikebukuro Station is located in the Ikebukuro District in Tokyo and is the second busiest commuter station in the world, second only to JR Shinjuku Station. In addition to the JR trains, this station also contains the Tobu Tojo Railway Line, Seibu Railway Line and the Tokyo Metro (Subway) lines. There are many department stores inside the station operated by Tobu Corporation and Seibu corporation. There is no Shinkansen service at this station.
Enjoy.
Touring Tokyo on the Yamanote line
Touring Tokyo on the Yamanote line
Tokyoites often say that the best way to get to know their city is to travel station by station around the Yamanote line, the city's iconic elevated loop line, running since 1925. The route includes well-known neighbourhoods like Shinjuku, Ueno, Akihabara and Shibuya, but also local spots that few outsiders visit.
The Yamanote Line (山手線 Yamanote-sen) is a railway loop line in Tokyo, Japan, operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East). It is one of Tokyo's busiest and most important lines, connecting most of Tokyo's major stations and urban centres, including Marunouchi, the Yūrakuchō/Ginza area, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro and Ueno, with all but two of its 29 stations connecting to other railway or underground (subway) lines.
As an official line name, Yamanote Line indicates the tracks between Shinagawa and Tabata via Shinjuku that are used by local trains on their own tracks as well as the parallel Yamanote Freight Line which is used by Saikyō Line and Shōnan-Shinjuku Line trains, some limited express services, and freight trains. However, in everyday usage the Yamanote Line refers to the entire 34.5 km loop line served by local trains
Can I use JR pass on Yamanote Line?
Japan Rail Pass holders can take advantage of the line for free. Taking any train on the Yamanote line is fully included in the JR Pass. Furthermore, this is the only line that connects all of Tokyo's most famous central stations such as Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Ueno and Tokyo Station
