My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Church of the Sepulchre of Saint Mary, also Tomb of the Virgin Mary, is a Christian tomb in the Kidron Valley – at the foot of Mount of Olives, in Jerusalem – believed by Eastern Christians to be the burial place of Mary, the mother of Jesus
The Sacred Tradition of Eastern Christianity teaches that the Virgin Mary died a natural death (the Dormition of the Theotokos, the falling asleep), like any human being; that her soul was received by Christ upon death; and that her body was resurrected on the third day after her repose, at which time she was taken up, soul and body, into heaven in anticipation of the general resurrection. Her tomb, according to this teaching, was found empty on the third day.
Roman Catholic teaching holds that Mary was assumed into heaven in bodily form, the Assumption; the question of whether or not Mary actually underwent physical death remains open in the Catholic view; however, most theologians believe that she did undergo death before her Assumption.[citation needed]
A narrative known as the Euthymiaca Historia (written probably by Cyril of Scythopolis in the 5th century) relates how the Emperor Marcian and his wife, Pulcheria, requested the relics of the Virgin Mary from Juvenal, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, while he was attending the Council of Chalcedon (451). According to the account, Juvenal replied that, on the third day after her burial, Mary's tomb was discovered to be empty, only her shroud being preserved in the church of Gethsemane.
According to another tradition it was the Cincture of the Virgin Mary which was left behind in the tomb.[
In 1972, Bellarmino Bagatti, a Franciscan friar and archaeologist, excavated the site and found evidence of an ancient cemetery dating to the 1st century; his findings have not yet been subject to peer review by the wider archaeological community, and the validity of his dating has not been fully assessed.
Bagatti interpreted the remains to indicate that the cemetery's initial structure consisted of three chambers (the actual tomb being the inner chamber of the whole complex), was adjudged in accordance with the customs of that period. Later, the tomb interpreted by the local Christians to be that of Mary's was isolated from the rest of the necropolis, by cutting the surrounding rock face away from it. An edicule was built on the tomb.[3]
The tomb of Mary on the east side of the church
A small upper church on an octagonal footing was built by Patriarch Juvenal (during Marcian's rule) over the location in the 5th century, and was destroyed in the Persian invasion of 614. During the following centuries the church was destroyed and rebuilt many times, but the crypt was left untouched. As for the Muslims, it is the burial place of the mother of prophet Isa (Jesus). It was rebuilt then in 1130 by the Crusaders, who installed a walled Benedictine monastery, the Abbey of St. Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat. The monastic complex included early Gothic columns, red-on-green frescoes, and three towers for protection. The staircase and entrance were also part of the Crusaders' church. This church was destroyed by Saladin in 1187, but the crypt was still respected; all that was left was the south entrance and staircase, the masonry of the upper church being used to build the walls of Jerusalem. In the second half of the 14th century Franciscan friars rebuilt the church once more. The Greek Orthodox clergy launched a Palm Sunday takeover of various Holy Land sites, including this one, in 1757 and expelled the Franciscans.[4] The Ottomans supported this status quo in the courts.[5] Since then, the tomb has been owned by the Armenian Apostolical Church of Jerusalem and Greek Orthodox Church, while the grotto of Gethsemane has still been possessed by Franciscans.
Tomb of Mary in Jerusalem Video
In today Video I am taking you to visit the Tomb of Mary in Jerusalem which is located at the slop of the Mount of Olives and it is within the Church of the Assumption Jerusalem.
In Christian belief, death is our punishment for the original sin. Regarding Mary, the mother of Jesus, God is believed to have shielded here from the stain of original sin at the time of her own conception; moreover Mary remained a virgin throughout her life. As such, Mary was the first among all human beings to experience resurrection.
Catholics believe that Mary was taken up body and soul into heaven while she slept at the site that is now the basement of the Dormition Abbey on Mount Zion. The Eastern Orthodox including the Greek Church claim that Mary died in her sleep (the Dormition of the Theotokos), buried and only then experienced resurrection from the tomb.
Today, the Church over the Tomb of Virgin Mary in Jerusalem, which was built back in the 14th century by the Franciscans, is controlled by the Greek Orthodox Church and the Armenian Apostolic Church.
Now let's enter the Church of the Tomb of Mary mother of Jesus in Jerusalem.
While the entrance gate dates back to the Crusaders, the three stairs in front of the entrance are new in order to prevent against flood water.47 steps lead to the depths of the cave but there are also important graves halfway down. Here to the right at this chapel, are the traditional graves of Marry's parents Anne and Joachim -- here to the right is the tomb of Anne and here is the tome of Joachim. Lower down on the left hand side, is the tomb of Joseph the Carpenter of Nazareth, Jesus' adoptive father and Mary's husband.
The Underground hall is shaped like a Cross but in now temporary T shape as the area opposite the stairs is blocked off because of flood damage.
To the right, there is the chapel housing Mary's Tomb. We are now entering the chapel to see and touch the Tomb of the Virgin Mary -- the burial place Mary mother Jesus. The Glass plates surround the tomb of Mary in order to prevent pilgrims from taking mementoes and here above the Tomb of Mary, is an opening in the ceiling symbolizing Mary ascent to heaven.
During the years the Moslems ruled Jerusalem, they built a prayer nice (Mihrab) in the cave facing East to Mecca and it is here to the left of the Tomb of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Behind Mary's Tomb, further along the cave, there is a painting of the Holy Mother and her son, to which Christians attribute special powers.
On the western side there is a Coptic altar.
Every year on August 15, while Christians all over the world celebrate the Assumption of Mary, a big ceremony is taking place here at the Mary Tomb in Jerusalem -- the actual burial place Mary mother Jesus...both by the Catholic and the Orthodox ......... for each of them I have a separate video.

All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. The Assumption of Mary into Heaven (often shortened to the Assumption) is, according to the beliefs of the Catholic Church, Eastern and Oriental Orthodoxy,[3] as well as parts of Anglicanism, the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life.
The Catholic Church teaches as dogma that the Virgin Mary having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.[4] This doctrine was dogmatically defined by Pope Pius XII on 1 November 1950, in the apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus by exercising papal infallibility.[5] While the Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church believe in the Dormition of the Theotokos (“the Falling Asleep of the Mother of God”),[6] whether Mary had a physical death has not been dogmatically defined. In Munificentissimus Deus (item 39) Pope Pius XII pointed to the Book of Genesis (3:15) as scriptural support for the dogma in terms of Mary's victory over sin and death through her intimate association with “the new Adam” (Christ)[7] as also reflected in 1 Corinthians 15:54: then shall come to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.[8][9][10]
The New Testament contains no explicit narrative about the death or Dormition, nor of the Assumption of Mary, but several scriptural passages have been theologically interpreted to describe the ultimate fate in this and the afterworld of the Mother of Jesus (see below).[11]
In the churches that observe it, the Assumption is a major feast day, commonly celebrated on 15 August. In many countries, the feast is also marked as a Holy Day of Obligation in the Roman Catholic Church.

Mary’s places the Dormition and the Tomb
“With one heart all these joined constantly in prayer, together with some women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers” (Acts: 1,14).
We find the last biblical reference to Mary in the Acts of the Apostles. Apocryphal literature, however, brings to light the final moments of her earthly life. A collection of ancient writings known as the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, or Death of the Virgin, collects the stories of the Assumption of Mary.
Events that Jerusalem guards in its stones, in its land and in its different sanctuaries at the places on which the memory of these facts has been handed down.
Take the Virgin Mary this morning and get out of Jerusalem on the road that leads to the beginning of thevalley at the foot of the Mount of Olives. There are three caves there, a large outside one, and a second one inside and an even smaller one inside that one. On the east wall of the latter there is a raised bench, come and lay the Blessed One on that bench” (From B.M. Transitus Virginis)
At the foot of the Mount of Olives, not far from the Garden of Gethsemane ... there is the Church of the Assumption, also known as the Tomb of the Virgin.
Here, according to tradition, the bench and the cave where the body where the body of the Mother of Jesus were placed ... and from here, Mary was assumed into Heaven.
