ATB 65 - Controlling Water - Making the Pieces Fit
From waterwheels to elaborate raceways to sophisticated turbines, the engineered landscape of water power put America on its journey to industrialization. The question today is how do we preserve this important pieces of our industrial story? Join us as we explore ways to preserve our industrial heritage in an era of our changing climate.
Along the Blackstone Episode 62: Farm to Factory, Factory to Farm
The history of the Blackstone River Valley's role in America's journey towards industrialization is quite significant - it all started here in the Blackstone Valley. It was here where the workers began that migration from the farm to the factory. The daily work schedule was no longer dictated by the movement of the sun, but by the clanging of the factory bell. It was a change that the workers had to adapt to, but there was another change as well, the development of the Factory Farm. After all mill workers had to eat too. Join us as Along the Blackstone's Episode #62 introduces us to some of the men who milked the cows, loaded the hay, and transported the dairy products to rail heads throughout the Valley - all as part of the Factory Farm. You'll get a chance to hear some great stories as farm life and mill life come together.

Along the Blackstone Episode 12: Mill Life
Were the mill owners of the Blackstone Valley the harsh, penny-pinching ogres we associate with a Charles Dickens novel or were they benevolent father-figures who genuinely cared about the welfare of their workers? The truth probably lies somewhere in between. As the industrial age swept across America, the impact on the workers and their communities were profound.Along the Blackstone Episode #12 - Mill Life will take a look at the Rumford Chemical Company, Village of Rumford, East Providence, RI and the Draper Manufacturing Co. of Hopedale, MA as we examine workers and mill owners.Professor Scott Molloy, labor historian at the University of Rhode Island, will put everything into perspective for us
The Green Pavilion A B&B Treehouse
Located a short drive from the beautiful city of Avignon, France, this charming tree house is actually a bed and breakfast cabin. The Green Pavilion, or Le Pavilion Vert in French, offers a charming 20 sq. meters cabin for two people, with a double bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette and a lovely 7 sq. meters terrace shaded by foliage.
The treehouse is perched between two oak trees, overlooking a beautiful garden. Inside, the ambiance is warm and inviting, where you can sleep comfortably under a tree branch and wake up in the morning to a tasty breakfast basket. Price is approx. €130 per night.
All elements of the structure were hoisted by hand and a rope bridge. The worktops are made of planks with the shape of the trunk on the outside edge. Check out these bright Aqua-colored window shutters, aren’t they adorable?

Run, Don't Walk: Sacred Movement among the Classic Maya
The Classic Maya made a critical distinction between the ordinary daily movement of humans and sacred, formal movement. Stephen D. Houston examines a rich inventory of glyphic references, imagery, and formal routes to show how linear movement formed the essence of sacred and marked motion among the Maya.
Stephen D. Houston is the Dupee Family Professor of Social Science and Professor of Anthropology and Archaeology at Brown University.

Jerusha Abbott was brought up at the John Grier Home, an old-fashioned orphanage. The children were wholly dependent on charity and had to wear other people's cast-off clothes. Jerusha's unusual first name was selected by the matron off a grave stone, while her surname was selected out of the phone book. At the age of 18, she has finished her education and is at loose ends, still working in the dormitories at the institution where she was brought up.
One day, after the asylum's trustees have made their monthly visit, Jerusha is informed by the asylum's dour matron that one of the trustees has offered to pay her way through college. He has spoken to her former teachers and thinks she has potential to become an excellent writer. He will pay her tuition and also give her a generous monthly allowance. Jerusha must write him a monthly letter, because he believes that letter-writing is important to the development of a writer. However, she will never know his identity; she must address the letters to Mr. John Smith, and he will never reply.
Jerusha catches a glimpse of the shadow of her benefactor from the back, and knows he is a tall long-legged man. Because of this, she jokingly calls him Daddy Long-Legs. She attends a women's college, but the name and location are never identified; however, men from Princeton University are frequently mentioned as dates, so it is certainly on the East Coast. The college is almost certainly based on the author's alma mater, Vassar College, judging from college traditions mentioned. She illustrates her letters with childlike line drawings, also created by Jean Webster. (Summary by Wikipedia)

SUMMARY
=======
Lowell is a city in the U.S. Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Located in Middlesex County, Lowell (along with Cambridge) was a county seat until Massachusetts disbanded county government in 1999. With an estimated population of 109,945 in 2014, it is the fourth-largest city in Massachusetts, and the second-largest in the Boston metropolitan statistical area. The city is also part of a smaller Massachusetts statistical area called Greater Lowell, as well as New England's Merrimack Valley region.
Incorporated in 1826 to serve as a mill town, Lowell was named after Francis Cabot Lowell, a local figure in the Industrial Revolution. The city became known as the cradle of the American Industrial Revolution, due to a large series of textile mills and factories. Many of the Lowell's historic manufacturing sites were later preserved by the National Park Service to create Lowell National Historical Park. During the Cambodian genocide, the city took in an influx of refugees, leading to a Cambodia Town and America's second-largest Cambodian-American population.Lowell is home to two institutions of higher education.
