this is a video of humpback whales that actually touched our boat as we were on a whale watching tour with Stephen Robinson of Top of the island boat tours! on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick Canada what a wonderful experience, I have seen many whales in my lifetime but to be up close and personal as this video, was absolutely amazing!
Life on Grand Manan Island
This post is part of Matador's partnership with Canada, where journalists show how to explore Canada like a local.
GRAND MANAN IS AN ISLAND RULED BY THE TIDES. 30+ foot exchanges sweep the shores of the rocky Atlantic island every six hours. The boats here often tie up to a dock but end up on dry land before too long.

Grand Manan, New Brunswick, Canada: Grand Manan Travel Video Postcard
Grand Manan, New Brunswick...on the famous Bay of Fundy, home of the highest tides in the world
Grand Manan Travel Video Postcard.
An unspoiled island is a rare find But an easy ferry ride from Blacks Harbor, New Bruswick will find you just that.
The ride to and from Grand Manan is itself a treat and in the right season you can easily see whales and dolphins.
(we were there a little too early, Summer and Autumn are best)
Grand Manan island guards the southern end of the Bay of Fundy. ( It's actually parallel to the Coast of Maine, at the head of the gulf)
And it's blessedly authentic,15 miles long, 6 plus miles wide and free of tourist glitz, its an honest working island.
Dulse is grand Manan's signature crop. The nutrient rich sea weed is sought world wide as flavoring, and a perfect natural fertilizer.
Fishermen rule, patient boats await the rising tide. Remember this is the Bay of Fundy and while the tides are less extreme than those further north,
they still require absolute attention and respect! Lobster buoys and herring weirs punctuate the waters.
Swallowtail lighthouse in North Head is accessible and spectacular. You can walk right to the edge of the cliffs guided by a thin orange rope.
Clearly Canadians trust that you will not step over the edge!...and a great place to meet new friends!
It's no wonder that Grand Manan makes geologists a bit giddy, with quiet harbors on one side and hair raising cliffs on the other.
The island was apparently the epicenter of tectonic movement...well before my time.
For those who choose Grand Manan as a retreat, its laced with well marked walking paths and flower dusted meadows.(What a joy to just stretch out in
one high on a south point overlook)
Author Willa Cather found a cabin overlooking Whale Cove
to be the perfect escape from unkind critics.
And there are just enough B&Bs like the Compass Rose to keep you well loved and coming back.

Mission: Grand Manan
In the fall of 2011, Hockey Canada and the makers of MARS® helped the community of Grand Manan, N.B., build a much-needed heated mezzanine at the Grand Manan Community Centre. This heated area was so important because unlike most rinks which are cooled below the ice, the Grand Manan arena is top down cooled, making the temperature in the arena down right freezing, and less than ideal for spectators. Now, families and friends can enjoy watching hockey games in a cozy environment! Watch the behind the scenes documentary to see the community in action!

Jungles in Paris is a purpose-driven multimedia project based in New York City. We use non-fiction films, photography and more to create transporting encounters both online and offline. The aim is to get modern audiences to slow down and observe, learn about, and connect with the planet: to foster a true interconnectivity between people and place.
Prioritizing the local, the authentic, the sustainable and the timeless, we tell real stories that implicitly question the modern mode of living, and its relationship to nature in particular. The Guardian has called Jungles in Paris “one of the best independent travel magazines, while Fast Company refers to it as “a reminder that the world is still full of surprises.”
