Torrance Barrens Dark-Sky Preserve is Gravenhurst's epic star-watching spot
Torrance Barrens Dark-Sky Preserve is one of only six locations in Ontario where you can appreciate spectacular nights skies. At nearly 5000 acres, this dark sky preserve is surrounded by undeveloped land, which protects it from light pollution. It's one of the few places in Canada where you can see the Milky Way, Andromeda Galaxy and even the Northern Lights. Find it along Southwood Road in Gravenhurst, Ontario.

Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Reserve - Mossy Lake Camping, Food, and Stargazing

Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Reserve is the first dark sky reserve project out of many others in Ontario. A group of us did a four day backcountry camping trip at this amazing spot located on Mossy Lake.
Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Reserve is known for it's stargazing at night due to the restriction on artificial light sources in the area.
There was a period where they had to prohibit camping because the amount of garbage that was left behind. If you ever want to camp at this beautiful place, please remember to keep the sites clean and leave no trace behind!

Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Preserve and Bala Falls, Muskoka, Ontario
We took a short drive to Bala Falls in Muskoka to see the late fall colours and on the way passed through the Torrance Barrens Dark-Sky Preserve. This area is a dark sky preserve for nighttime star gazing and is remote from man-made light. We stopped there to look at some of the glacial erratic boulders scattered around on the scoured bedrock then carried on to Bala Falls.

While Mountain Biking at Torrance Barrens, I was shocked to see a naked guy on the trail. I have no idea how he could have been enjoying himself, the Mosquito's were terrible....
Anyway..... the trails were good.
