Fredy's Tucan and Roberto's Puerto Nuevo Restaurants in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
This week I have two Interviews with very special people in Puerto Vallarta. One is Fredy Garcia, You know him as Fredy from Fredy’s Tucan, and the other is Roberto Castellon, the Owner of Roberto’s Puerto Nuevo Superb Seafood, both on the Southside of Puerto Vallarta.
When you walk up to Fredy’s there is almost always a line but don’t let that deter you, if goes really fast. They have water and coffee for you while you wait, a nice touch, and best of all, when you reserve your table at the door, you are talking to the guy you are going to hear from right now. That’s right, the boss man himself, Fredy Garcia will be there at the door of Fredy’s Tucan, with a big smile on his face. He always recognizes his clients who return year after year to the Mecca of the Vallarta breakfast Restaurant scene, the place where when you sit down, a waiter comes up and plies you with a sweet treat from a pastry tray just to start things off right. Oh my, I’m getting hungry. So, let’s go right now to Basilio Badillo 245, Emiliano Zapata, neighborhood, on the Southside of Puerto Vallarta, and meet Fredy Garcia, you know him as Fredy, from Fredy’s Tucan.

My next guest is a multifaceted man. Roberto Castellon has a restaurant on Basillio Badillo Called Roberto’s Original Puerto Nuevo Superb Seafood. I asked JR to introduce me to Roberto and we walked over to Roberto’s, and he introduced me, and I proceed to go into my spiel about what I do, and how I wanted to interview him about his story and his restaurant, and Roberto stood there very patiently and in the end I asked, Me entiendes? And he said, well Barry, I speak English pretty good.
While I waited for Roberto to finish tending to some of his guests, I couldn’t help but notice the care he took, listening to them. All of them by the way, seemed to know him personally. It was like all of these people were friends. Long lost friends in some cases with warm hugs and bug smiles. Like old friends taking off from where they left off last rear. He and his wait staff the same. You could tell this was a very special place.
The space itself is not too big, linen tablecloths, cloth napkins, nice stemware, soft music, romantic lighting. Just a lovely space.

Tour & Reviews of Grand Fiesta Americana Puerto Vallarta 2019
Grand hotel in Mexico's legendary Pacific Coast resort town of Puerto Vallarta. It's the ideal spot for a romantic getaway with the one you love – a place to forget about the bustle of daily life and recapture the closeness, the romance, and the passion that come so naturally when surrounded by such a beautiful place. The hotel is located just six minutes from the Historic Downtown District and 20 minutes from Puerto Vallarta International Airport
We were on floor 8 in the south tower, just 3 rooms along from the skybar. It was quite loud at night, which didn’t bother us too much, but if you want a quiet room you would need to request to be at the far side of the south or north tower, away from the bar.
The staff in the resort are all incredibly friendly and helpful and are an absolute credit to the hotel. The entertainment staff in particular (Juan, Emilio, Abraham & Roberto) really made the trip for us! There was always so much going on by the pool whether it be aqua fitness, card games, cooking classes, silly games or water volleyball, and the team were great at getting people involved! There’s sometimes even things to win up for grabs, like free massages or excursions (we actually won an excursion with Vallarta Adventures which was awesome, and worth $129!)
The pool area is fun and lively during the day, and there are lots of pool-side activities you can hop into at a moment's notice (card games, bartending class, tortilla-making class, dance lessons, to name a few). The activity staff are all amazing and by the end of the week, they felt like an extension of our group - love when they can join in on our volleyball games!
The food was great. The 3 speciality restaurants (Asian, Mexican & Italian) produced delicious and high quality food. The service did drop a little on the weekends when it was busy, but nothing that was really a problem. The portions aren’t huge which we liked - they certainly don’t scrimp on the more expensive ingredients and don’t try and fill you with excessive carbs - there’s always the option to order more too for those that do prefer larger meals. The cervicheria is a great option for lunch - so much fresh fish & seafood! The grill (and pool food service) caters more towards burgers/tacos/hot dogs. There really is so much choice for whichever style of dining you prefer. We also tried the buffet - good selection at breakfast with an egg station, fresh juicing station etc. At lunch and dinner there didn’t feel to be as much choice at the buffet, so we just stuck with the a la Carte restaurants after one trip. A few people have complained on reviews about things like the coffee bar in the lobby charging - this is just if you want Starbucks branded coffee. You can pick up a standard coffee for no cost.
The cocktails and drinks at the bars were amazing - definitely quite strong and the choice was not limited! The pool service waiters were great - Fernando and the team made sure we were never without! Would have been good to have a menu at the pool bar as inspiration on what cocktails to order.
The resort is absolutely beautiful. The location is stunning, and the resort is kept incredibly clean. They treated our room with tea tree oil daily, and we did not see a single insect in our room, which is unheard of south of the border. The maid service was impeccable.
The location of the property is convenient to town. It is a $10-$15 US cab ride, and the hotel staff will get you a taxi super fast. There is a cool littl towwn further up the coast that has a tequila distellery that is worth chekcing out (I think it is called Mama someething). We went in to town twice. We tried both of the microbreweries and had dinner at Jo Jack's fishouse, which is awesome. We also ate street tacos at a little place called Carboncito. Also outstanding.
Overall we had a fantastic holiday and the things that weren’t 100% in no way affected our enjoyment! Would definitely recommend!

Puerto Vallarta: The Famous Calle Basilio Badillo
Puerto Vallarta: The Famous Calle Basilio Badillo Vallarta's one stop shop. There are many names for this side of town: For many who have lived here for years it was always called Old town, But in later years has become known as Southside and the Romantic zone. It has always welcomed expats! It has a great sense of community.
Puerto Vallarta Restaurants: Di Vino Dante. We went to this great tapas wine bar last night.It is above Dante's art gallery on Basilio Badillo.
My husband and I shared the cheese & salami platter and then the meatballs. Everything was so fresh and tasty. We also ordered the pizza but had to take it home since we were so full. ( a good treat for lunch today) we had a nice bottle of Merlot from Argentina. Extremely inexpensive restaurant but also first class. The waiter spoke perfect English and had obviously been well trained. Since it is affiliated with the art gallery downstairs, there are pieces of art, both paintings and sculptures everywhere. The staff encourage you to wander around between courses. This place is a total spectacular venue.
Puerto Vallarta Coffee Shop: The Big Kahuna
Being Australian, we are self confessed coffee snobs. One of the biggest dilemmas of our holidays is always where to get a good coffee. Well this place is pretty much coffee nirvana! We tried all the cafes in Puerto Vallarta and this place is the best for coffee to go. Good flavoursome espresso and very good cafe latte's. They serve in big cups so make sure that you ask for a double shot!
Pancho's Tacos: The best Tacos Al Pastor in Puerto Vallarta. Pancho's is a tiny shop in Zona Romantica, right on Basilio Badillo. There's always a crowd so you won't miss it. Definitely get the tacos al pastor (cooking on the pit in front) and a side of grilled scallions. Very affordable but cash only.
What a menu! This is a terrific breakfast place....it has been a favorite of mine and my family for several years. It has a garden dining area with orchids and lush tropical plants, a little gift shop and, Memo serves high-elevation, organic coffee from Chiapas....delicious!
In 1982, Basilio Badillo consisted of 3 small hotels and one or two businesses. In 1988, Basilio Badillo was known for three restaurants, Roberto’s Puerto Nuevo, Pizza Joe and El Tucan (run by Memo who later opened Memo’s Pancake house) . These restaurants were so successful that more restaurants and other businesses started to relocate to this area. In the mid-90’s there were 12 restaurants on the 200 block of Basilio Badillo, so for years it was known as “Restaurant Row,” or La Calle de los Cafés. Some restaurants closed, and fine shops started to take over. Now in 2015, there are more than 100 businesses in 5 short blocks of Basilio Badillo. There are 28 restaurants, 5 coffee shops, plus 5 specialty shops: chocolates, icecream, crepes, 2 bakeries. 31 shops which include fine art and folk art galleries, clothing and jewelry. There are two great theatres! There is a hospital, yoga studio, dental offices, 4 pharmacies, 8 massage parlors and more. And for more than 30 years Alano which offers several 12 step programs in English. As a result, the area has been known for some years as the best place in town to hang out.

For me, Puerto Vallarta is about the people number one, the beauty number two and the food, number 3. And this restaurant I’m going to take you to is a real gem. The owner and chef is Roberto Gonzalez. Roberto as you will find out has been in the food business his whole life. You will be amazed at his experiences and where he has worked, all leading him to where he is today, His Restaurant Martini en Fuego. I was sitting across the street from Martini en Fuego, having dinner with listeners my friends listeners Cheryl and Jim, from Indiana, at Adobe’s restaurant, great place by the way, and Jim asked if I had been over to Martini en fuego and met Roberto. I said no, and he says you need to have Roberto on your show. We’ve known him forever. He has a great story, and his restaurant is so good. They insisted after dinner we go over there, they would introduce me to Roberto. Of course I love it when I get introduced to someone I don’t know, but had been looking forward to interviewing. Thanks Cheryl and Jim. This was perfect. We sat down and had a few drinks. Well immediately, I liked this guy. And I asked if he would share his story with you and he said yes, so I came back the next afternoon before they opened for business, and I had a talk with my new friend and now yours, so let’s go right now to Francisco I. Puerto Vallarta Mexico plane crash leaves Londoner Varsha Maisuria missin
A woman from London is missing off the coast of Mexico after a skydiving plane crashed into the sea.
Varsha Maisuria, 42, a civil servant from Hendon, has been missing since the crash at Las Glorias Beach on Thursday.
Ms Maisuria was involved in the crash along with four other people while on holiday on the Bay of Banderas.
She and another woman are still missing after the plane crashed into the sea but the pilot and two men survived. The plane is now 1,000m underwater.
'We miss her'
Robin Nicole Ballachey, from the US, is the other person still missing, the Maisuria family said.
Local search and rescue teams who are investigating told the family the plane had been found in the sea.
In a statement to the BBC, Ms Maisuria's family, based in Loughborough, Leicestershire, said: We are absolutely distraught at what happened. It is beyond our worst nightmare. We miss her desperately and want her to come back home to the family under any circumstances.
We were in complete shock and disbelief [when we first found out she was missing]. You never expect these things happen to your family.
You could never even imagine such a tragedy in the circumstances that unfolded. The fact that Varsha is still missing is extremely painful.
A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: We can confirm that a British national was reported missing in Mexico on 7 May.
We are providing consular assistance to the family and liaising with local authorities.
Un pequeño Cessna 180 se estrelló en la Bahía de Banderas esta tarde frente a la costa en la playa de Las Glorias en Puerto Vallarta.
Tres de los cinco pasajeros fueron rescatados por Puerto Vallarta Jalisco Protecciones Civiles, dos están todavía desaparecidos.

Mirador Faro Calle Matamoros Centro de Puerto Vallarta / Lighthouse Lookout
El Faro Mirador de Matamoros (en realidad es una baliza) en el centro de Puerto Vallarta - está en la colina que domina la ciudad, ofrece una fabulosa vista de la ciudad y Bahía de Banderas.
El faro fue construido e inaugurado el 15 de agosto de 1932 por el capitán del puerto Roberto Alcazar. Sirvió guiando naves junto con el faro en la calle Galeana, hasta junio de 1978 cuando ya no siguió usándose.
En 2006 fue remodelado, restaurado y el acceso público desde la calle se hizo más fácil, incluyendo escaleras, y también se agregó una terraza mirador.
Un gran lugar para tomar fotos de la ciudad o simplemente disfrutar de la vista panorámica de la ciudad.
Cómo llegar al Mirador Faro de Matamoros
Comience caminando desde el malecón, en la esquina de Galeana y Morelos, subiendo por Galeana, hacia las colinas, cruza calle Juárez, luego cruza calle Hidalgo, allí comenzarás a subir las escaleras, lindas casas flanquean la calle, y lindos jardines llenan lo que sería la calle misma. The Matamoros Lighthouse Lookout (actually a beacon) in downtown Puerto Vallarta, this one is on the hill that overlooks the city, it offers a fabulous view of the city and Banderas Bay (Bahia de Banderas).
The lighthouse was built and inaugurated on August 15, 1932 by the captain of the port Roberto Alcazar. It served as a guiding and orientation beacon for ships along with the beacon (lighthouse) on Galeana Street by the Puerto Vallarta Malecon, until June 1978 when it stopped being used as all ships were by then routed to the main harbor area south of the Marina Vallarta area.
In 2006 it was remodeled, restored and public access from the street was made easier, including stairs, and a viewing terrace was also added.
A great place to take pictures of the city or just enjoy the panoramic view of the city.
How to get to the Matamoros Street Lookout Beacon/Lighthouse (Mirador Faro de Matamoros)
Start walking from the boardwalk, on the corner of Galeana and Morelos street, walk up Galeana as if going up the hill, cross Juarez Street, then cross Hidalgo Street, there you will begin to climb up the stairs, beautiful houses flank the path, and beautiful gardens fill what would be the street itself. The next street is Matamoros, take a right, about 30 meters and to the left are the stairs that go up to the lighthouse/beacon lookout.

Where is the Matamoros Lighthouse Lookout in Downtown Puerto Vallarta
The Matamoros Lighthouse Lookout (actually it's a beacon) in downtown Puerto Vallarta, this one is up on the hill overlooking the town, it offers a great view of the city and the Banderas Bay.
The beacon itself was built and inaugurated August 15th, 1932 by The Harbor Captain Roberto Alcazar. It served by guiding ships along with the beacon on Galeana street, until June 1978 when it was no longer used.
In 2006 it was remodeled, restored and the public street access was made easier, including stairs, a lookout terrace was also added.
A great place for taking photos of the town or just enjoying the panoramic view of the city.
Start off from the malecón, on the corner of Galeana and Morelos, on the malecon, you'll find a smaller lighthouse there, I climbed it and there's a nice view of the surroundings... I'm not sure you can, but there was no sign saying I couldn't, don't try it if you are not athletic enough.
Walk up Galeana, towards the hills, cross Juárez, then cross Hidalgo, there you'll start up the stairs, cute houses flank the street, and nice gardens fill what would be the street itself. Next street is Matamoros (huff, puff...), turn right, some 80-100 ft on your left are the stairs up to the lighthouse.
