Portland Sunrise. Memory Stones In the light of day after 150 million years.
A new dawn. Huge rocks of Portland Stone now tower over the Tout Quarry Sculpture Park & Nature Reserve, high on the Isle of Portland. See also the professional films by David Kew and Eagle Vista e.g. and
The ‘Memory Stones’ create a new arrival point to Tout Quarry Sculpture Park & Nature Reserve and the Wider Portland Quarries Nature Park; a network of abandoned and disused quarries that are packed full of wildlife, heritage, and industrial archaeology.
‘Memory Stones’ is the work of artist Hannah Sofaer, MA (RCA) who has selected large stones from Portland Stone Firms Ltd and Albion Stone plc open cast quarries that will connect to audio visual recordings that she has made of Portland’s Quarry environment, people and skills of working with stone; to form an additional layer of memory overlaid on the landscape and its geology. Within a few years these stones will become weathered and grey, which will accentuate the surface features on each piece.
Portland's Memory Stones (Beacon Matrix) Lifting the final great pillars of rock into place
The final two great pillars of rock were craned into place in March 2019, completing a near circle of huge Portland Stone blocks created on the Heights of the Isle of Portland. This 'Memory Stone - Beacon Matrix' towers over the Tout Quarry Sculpture Park & Nature Reserve. They have been carefully placed to relate to various topographical features, and the symbolism will be explained. See:

Sorry for the dreadful video quality. Clicking below does yield marginally better vid, but don't get your hopes up!
I experienced some technical difficulties. I'll do a longer, and sharper, version when I get the time.
Anyways . .this is just a short saunter around the disused Tout Quarry on the Isle of Portland. About 20 years ago it was leased to a Sculpture Trust, who invited artists from around the world to add their mark. In most cases the scupltures are just hewn from the living rock, in situ. It is a delight to happen upon them as you wander around.
The most famous artist represented is Anthony Gormley, noted for his 'Angel of The North' sculpture, near Newcastle U.K. Tout quarry is the last, totally hand-worked quarry on the Island. No machinery was ever used and so there are a large number of 'bays' which were worked upon at different times. The quarry is a reserve for beautiful lizards, butterflies and rare indigenous plants.
The bridge you see, once carried the Merchants' Railway, constructed to take Portland Stone down to waiting ships, and onwards to London ( St Pauls Cathedral & The City) . .and to all corners of the world! If you walk beneath the bridge, to leave the quarry, you will soon find yourself on a clifftop path with stunning views of the world-famous Chesil Beach.
There are still some stone blocks, in existence, which were marked-up in Sir Christopher Wren's own hand, but were not actually required for the Cathedral.
It was a fearsomely-hot, summers' day when I filmed this. Bring water if you visit in summer. Entrance is FREE! While you're here, be sure to travel down to the southern tip of the 'Island', to see Portland Bill lighthouse and to enjoy tea and scones or a sandwich of fresh, locally-caught crab in the excellent cafe, nearby. Bliss!
The tuneful bird was actually a RED-BREASTED ROBIN !
