William Gear: The painter that Britain forgot
In the centenary of his birth, Towner is delighted to present a major retrospective of the work of William Gear, one of the leading abstract British painters of his generation. William Gear, The painter that Britain forgot traces the influence and prolific output of a now little-known painter who was associated with CoBrA in the 1940s, and produced some of the most radical and controversial compositions of the 1950s.
William Gear, The painter that Britain forgot draws together around 100 works representing the different phases of Gear’s oeuvre: from the pen and ink drawings and early experiments in colour of his emerging style in the 1930s and 1940s, to the radical, near-monochrome and block abstractions of the 1950s, to a mature, yet playful exuberance in the 1960s and beyond.

Model Churches (1956)
Eastbourne, East Sussex.
M/S of three detailed wooden model cathedrals (Canterbury, San Antonio in Padua and San Francesco in Assisi) on a table with wood chips scattered about. M/S of John Hearsey sitting at the table and carving another model; this one is the cathedral at Cologne. C/Us as he carves a piece of wood with a razor blade to make a spire and glues it on the model - it looks like very intricate work. Commentator talks of John's interest in churches and history and how it grew into an exhaustive model making hobby. He picks up the model to examine it; commentator says it took six months to make.
M/Ss of the exterior of the Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne; at an angle we see a poster advertising an exhibition of 'Models of European Cathedrals by John Hearsey'. M/S panning across a table where numerous models are displayed - the work involved is mind-boggling! M/S of the curate of Eastbourne Parish Church looking at the models and picking up one of St Peter's Cathedral (Rome) to examine it closely.
C/Us of a model the cathedrals of Seville and Lincoln; the Blue Mosque of Istanbul. C/U of the end of a ruler; it is taken away to show a tiny, detailed model behind of Leningrad's Church of the Resurrection, measuring about 2 inches! The display turntable rotates to show the other side of the model. Rotating C/U of Rouen Cathedral.
Note: John Hearsey was 27 when this story was shot. On file is a detailed list of the models in the exhibition plus a profile of John, by himself.

United Visual Artists' Vanishing Point at Towner, Eastbourne (long version)
A behind-the-scenes film about Vanishing Point, a multimedia exhibition, by London-based art practice United Visual Artist, at Towner. uva.co.uk
United Visual Artists: Vanishing Point is open to the public from 18 April -- 22 June. townereastbourne.org.uk
Produced and edited by Andrew Crowe.
Inspired by sketches of Leon Battista Alberti, Leonardo DaVinci and Albrecht Dürer, UVA sends lines into space from an arbitrary vanishing point, creating different volumes, divisions and rooms to be explored by the audience. Drawing upon their studies in programmable architecture, they will be developing a body of work for Towner using light, installation, print and screen.
A fascination with the physical presence of light is embedded in UVA's work and they have explored different ways of creating a structure from light. Vanishing Point employs perspective as both a tool and visual outcome to reshape, redefine and represent a space.
