Sankeien is a traditional and typical Japanese-style garden designed and landscaped by Sankei Hara ( his real name was Tomitaro Hara) , a wealthy businessman in the silk trade.
He reconstructed buildings of historic importance from places such as Kyoto and Kamakura in this garden, which was opend to the public as ”Sankeien”in 1906.
In the garden, whose surface extends to 175000㎡, seventeen old buildings of high historic value are skillfully arranged in harmony with the seasonal changes of the natural scenery.
The Second World War caused great damage, and in 1953 the property was transferred from the Harafamily to the care of the Sankeien Hoshokai foundation. Restoration works were carried out, and five years later, Sankeien had nearly recovered its former appearance.

尺八 Shakuhachi, Live in Tokyo--Cornelius Boots, original composition The Greening of Mount Subasio
Featured on the album Bamboo Rising:
New Nature Music for Shakuhachi. Performed and written by Cornelius 深禅 (Shinzen) Boots on jinashi 1.8 shakuhachi made by Jon Kypros.
Live in Tokyo at Sekichou An in Mejiro Park, October 29, 2016.
Shiba-san and Amy-san curated, and translated.
[Toshima Ward Mejiro garden] Yubinbango171-0031 Toshima-ku, Tokyo Mejiro 3-20-18
The opening section was written on a day hike on Mt. Subasio in July 2013.
Mount Subasio is adjacent to the town of Assisi, Italy, renowned for producing the (what I like to think of as) Taoist of the Catholic faith, St. Francis. In fact, his special T symbol (like a very rustic cross with the top part missing) is actually called THE TAU. Indeed!
Cornelius Boots creates and performs neo-classical nature music on big bamboo flutes, under the influence of rock, metal, blues and Zen. A sorcerer of sound, a wizard of wind, Boots is known as a pioneer in heavy chamber music and the former leader and composer of the world's only original bass clarinet quartet, Edmund Welles. Cornelius is the first student of Grandmaster Michael Chikuzen Gould to have earned a Shihan (master teaching license) and was given the shakuhachi name 深禅 Shinzen (depth Zen or deep Zen). In addition to teaching, Cornelius has recorded and written, in shakuhachi calligraphic notation, a series of 27 etudes (mukyoku) for Taimu shakuhachi. He plays all types of flutes, but specializes in jinashi and large-bore shakuhachi. As a Zen Taoist, Boots considers the energy and vital breath (qi) aspects of shakuhachi playing to be sometimes labeled kung fu flute, meaning a concentrated practice of awareness and excellence.
Actively merging the threads of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Watazumido and Jimi Hendrix on jinashi and bass bamboo shakuhachi flutes. 竹の尺八

Sugamo neighborhood of Tokyo
Sugamo (巣鴨?) is a neighborhood in Toshima ward of Tokyo, Japan. Jizō-dōri (地蔵通り?), a shopping street for the older generation .
The shops here sell clothing, traditional foods, domestic wares, and reading material that cater specifically to the older generation. Older people from all over Tokyo and surrounding areas come to Jizo-dori for their shopping. The place is popularly known as “Harajuku for Grannies” (Harajuku being a popular shopping street for the young) because of the large number of senior citizens that visit it.
The authorities have taken into consideration the needs of the elderly. The guide-board and rate-tables at the Station are all hand written and placed at eye-level and ticket machines are set lower. The pavements around the station and the rest of the area are flat and the streets have textured bricks to prevent slip. The area also has several places of rest with covered roofs. All shops at Jizo-dori and the rest of Sugamo are also barrier-free, making it easy for the elderly with canes, walkers, or wheelchairs to enter and move around.

Japan Trip 2014 Tokyo Shinjuku Night view Stroll in the Shinjuku-dōri
Shinjuku, Tokyo
Shinjuku (新宿区 Shinjuku-ku?, New Lodge) is a special ward located in Tokyo Metropolis, Japan. It is a major commercial and administrative centre, housing the busiest train station in the world (Shinjuku Station) and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, the administration centre for the government of Tokyo. As of 2008, the ward has an estimated population of 312,418 and a population density of 17,140 people per km². The total area is 18.23 km².
Geography and neighborhoods
Shinjuku is surrounded by Chiyoda to the east; Bunkyo and Toshima to the north; Nakano to the west, and Shibuya and Minato to the south.
The current city of Shinjuku grew out of several separate towns and villages, which have retained some distinctions despite growing together as part of the Tokyo metropolis.
East Shinjuku: The area east of Shinjuku Station and surrounding Shinjuku-sanchome Station, historically known as Naito-Shinjuku, houses the city hall and the flagship Isetan department store, as well as several smaller areas of interest:
Kabukichō: Tokyo's best-known red-light district, renowned for its variety of bars, restaurants, and sex-related establishments.
Golden Gai: An area of tiny shanty-style bars and clubs. Musicians, artists, journalists, actors and directors gather here, and the ramshackle walls of the bars are literally plastered with film posters.
Shinjuku Gyoen: A large park, 58.3 hectares, 3.5 km in circumference, blending Japanese traditional, English Landscape and French Formal style gardens.
Shinjuku Ni-chōme: Tokyo's best-known gay district.
Nishi-Shinjuku: The area west of Shinjuku Station, historically known as Yodobashi, is home to Tokyo's largest concentration of skyscrapers. Several of the tallest buildings in Tokyo are located in this area, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, KDDI Building and Park Tower.
Ochiai: The northwestern corner of Shinjuku, extending to the area around Ochiai-minami-nagasaki Station and the south side of Mejiro Station, is largely residential with a small business district around Nakai Station.
Ōkubo: The area surrounding Okubo Station, Shin-Okubo Station and Higashi-Shinjuku Station is best known as Tokyo's historic ethnic Korean neighborhood.
Totsuka: The northern portion of Shinjuku surrounding Takadanobaba Station and Waseda University. The Takadanobaba area is a major residential and nightlife area for students, as well as a commuter hub.
Ushigome: A largely residential area in the eastern portion of the city.
Ichigaya: A commercial area in eastern Shinjuku, site of the Ministry of Defense.
Kagurazaka: A hill descending to the Iidabashi Station area, once one of Tokyo's last remaining hanamachi or geisha districts, and currently known for hosting a sizable French community.[4]
Yotsuya: An upscale residential and commercial district in the southeast corner of Shinjuku. The Arakichō area is well known for its many small restaurants, bars, and izakaya.
Shinjuku is often popularly understood to mean the entire area surrounding Shinjuku Station, but the Shinjuku Southern Terrace complex and the areas to the west of the station and south of Kōshū Kaidō are part of the Yoyogi district of the city of Shibuya.
Naturally, most of Shinjuku is occupied by the Yodobashi Plateau, the most elevated portion of which extends through most of the Shinjuku Station area. The Kanda River runs through the Ochiai and Totsuka areas near sea level, but the Toshima Plateau also builds elevation in the northern extremities of Totsuka and Ochiai. The highest point in Shinjuku is Hakone-san in Toyama Park, 44.6 m above sea level.

This version (Three Valleys) is from the dokyoku lineage, roughly based on renditions of Watazumi and continued on by Katsuya Yokoyama, Yoshinobu Taniguchi, Michael Chikuzen Gould and handful of others. On a flute this size and girth, drawing on the full breath energy becomes essential, so the rendition starts to sound more like Watazumi. Note: although circular breathing is a foundational aspect of my own Black Earth Shakuhachi School, it is never permitted in honkyoku, which is a breath-centric, completely unique solo woodwind repertoire where circular breathing is counter to its intrinsic nature.

I am committed to woodwind performance as a living art form in collaboration with the natural material, with plant consciousness. Because of this, I only play on jinashi or 100% bamboo, unlacquered shakuhachi, hotchiku and Taimu flutes. 深竹道
Founder/composer of Black Earth Shakuhachi School, Cornelius Boots has forged his own eclectic style as a professional woodwind performer since 1989. A licensed shakuhachi master, prize-winning composer and former bass clarinet performance innovator, he is actively merging the threads of John Coltrane, Watazumido, and Muddy Waters on jinashi (all-natural) and Taimu (bass) shakuhachi.
Boots has generated and released an entire body of new songs and compositions for these large, raw and rare bamboo flutes of Japanese Zen Buddhist origin: mukyoku (27 pieces for Taimu) and Shakuhachi Unleashed (48 virtuosic songs of rock, Zen, blues, metal and more). In 2018, he was a finalist in the World Shakuhachi Competition, a featured performer for Sony PlayStation’s E3 press conference (LA) and a featured performer/lecturer at both the World Bamboo Congress (Xalapa, Mexico) and the World Shakuhachi Festival (London).
A three-time graduate of the renowned Jacobs School of Music (BM Classical Clarinet ’97, BS Audio Recording ’97, MM Jazz Studies ’99), Boots’ training and work experience is deep and diverse: jazz saxophonist, Dixieland clarinetist, symphony bass clarinetist, funk and progressive rock bandleader and founder/composer of the world’s only composing bass clarinet quartet, Edmund Welles. With his latest three albums, the Shakuhachi Unleashed series—Holy Flute (2017), Bamboo Rising (2018), and Sacred Root (2019)—Cornelius continues to develop “bamboo gospel,” a robust, cross-cultural solo style utilizing rare breath-defying techniques and maximum polystylistic prowess.
A Performer’s Certificate Awardee from David N. Baker’s seminal Jazz Studies program at Indiana University, Cornelius is the first student of Grandmaster Michael Chikuzen Gould to have earned a Shihan (master teaching license) in 2013 and was given the shakuhachi name 深禅 Shinzen (depth Zen or deep Zen). In addition to teaching, Cornelius has recorded and written, in shakuhachi calligraphic notation, a series of 27 etudes (mukyoku) for Taimu shakuhachi. First-prize winner of the 2013 International Clarinet Composition Competition, Boots has also received commissions and awards from Chamber Music America, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Areon Flutes, International Songwriting Competition and Meet the Composer.

Visit and sign up on the mailing list or contact Cornelius for online or in person lessons. You don't need a flute or basic sounds before you start learning: with shakuhachi, these are very important aspects of your first lessons.
