Alton Towers Smiler rollercoaster breaks down leaving passengers hanging 100ft in the air
The Smiler ride at Alton Towers left people hanging 100ft in the air today for 20 minutes after it broke down.
Just before 6PM this evening a carriage full of daredevils at the Stoke-on-Trent theme park came to a halt as the ride started to climb.
Thrill-seekers were stranded for 20 minutes and were forced to wait for engineers to fix the problem.
Workers reversed the carriage back down to the start of the ride, allowing passengers to get off.
The incident happened just four years after a crash on the ride which left 16 people injured. An Alton Towers spokesman said: 'We apologise to all guests affected by the stoppage on The Smiler late this afternoon.
'Our guest relations team have spoken to everyone on board to offer return tickets to the park as compensation for the inconvenience.
'Our technical team are working to reset the ride this evening so this should not affect guests visiting the park tomorrow.'It comes just one month after the park was forced to close its Wicker Man ride unexpectedly, after engineers were called in to fix a fault with the park's newest attraction.
In 2015 Leah Washington had been on a date with boyfriend Joe Pugh when the Smiler rollercoaster carriage smashed into a stationary train.
Leah from Barnsley, was one of two young passengers who lost a leg while Joe, suffered devastating injuries himself including two shattered kneecaps. In spite the trauma of the crash, the pair have stayed together and often post pictures of their days out on social media.
Despite having a state-of-the-art £60,000 prosthetic leg which allows her to walk unaided, the teenager still suffers crippling pain and fatigue after standing for long periods.

Gordon Banks
Gordon Banks, OBE (born 30 December 1937) is a former England international football goalkeeper. He made 628 appearances during a 15 year career in the Football League, and won 73 caps for his country. The IFFHS named Banks the second best goalkeeper of the 20th century – after Lev Yashin (1st) and ahead of Dino Zoff (3rd). He was named FWA Footballer of the Year in 1972, and was named FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year on six occasions.
He joined Chesterfield in March 1953, and played for the youth team in the 1956 FA Youth Cup final. He made his first team debut in November 1958, and was sold to Leicester City for £7,000 in July 1959. He played in four cup finals for the club, as they were beaten in the 1961 and 1963 FA Cup finals, before winning the League Cup in 1964 and finishing as finalists in 1965. During this time he established himself as England's number one goalkeeper, and played every game of the nation's 1966 World Cup victory. Despite this success, he was dropped by Leicester and sold on to Stoke City for £50,000 in April 1967. He made one of the game's great saves to prevent a Pelé goal in the 1970 World Cup, but was absent due to illness as England were beaten by West Germany at the quarter-final stage.

Edmund de Waal, “The White Road”
January 12, 2016
The Getty Center, Los Angeles
“What is this thing of whiteness?” Potter and author Edmund de Waal visits the Getty Museum to talk about his new book, The White Road: Journey into an Obsession -- an obsession with porcelain that takes him to the historical roots of “white gold” in China, France, Germany, England, and the U.S. In one shocking chapter, de Waal describes his discovery that Nazi leaders also cherished porcelain and set up a manufactory next to the Dachau concentration camp. In the final portion of the talk, de Waal discusses his latest project creating an exhibition for Los Angeles, which is inspired by the work of John Cage and architect Rudolf Schindler.
Introduction by Timothy Potts, director of the Getty Museum

History of England
The territory that now constitutes England, a country within the United Kingdom, was inhabited by ancient humans more than 800,000 years ago as the discovery of flint tools and footprints at Happisburgh in Norfolk has revealed. The earliest evidence for early modern humans in North West Europe is a jawbone discovered in Devon at Kents Cavern in 1927, which was re-dated in 2011 to between 41,000 and 44,000 years old. Continuous human habitation dates to around 12,000 years ago, at the end of the last glacial period. The region has numerous remains from the Mesolithic, Neolithic, and Bronze Age, such as Stonehenge and Avebury. In the Iron Age, England, like all of Britain south of the Firth of Forth, was inhabited by the Celtic people known as the Britons, but also by some Belgae tribes in the south east. In AD 43 the Roman conquest of Britain began; the Romans maintained control of their province of Britannia through to the 5th century.

Mike Sheron - Stoke City (part two)
Mike Sheron goals - 1996/97
Liverpool born Mike Sheron started his career with Manchester City in the early nineties. An England U21 International, his best season at Maine Road came in 1992/93 when he scored 14 goals. After falling out of favour he joined Norwich City in 1994/95 but scored just four times as the Canaries were relegated from the top flight. In November 1995 he joined Stoke in a player swap deal which saw the unpopular Keith Scott move to Carrow Road in return. The move proved to be a masterstroke by manager Lou Macari. Sheron formed a near telepathic partnership with Simon Sturridge, scoring fifteen times as the Potters reached the First Division play-offs only to lose out to Leicester City. The following season (1996/97) Sheron hit another 24 goals as Stoke finished in mid table. Transfer speculation started to grow in 1997 and he was linked with the likes of Everton, Birmingham City and Queens Park Rangers. Much to the disappointment of supporters he joined QPR of the summer, Stoke picking up a club record £2.75 million in return for his signature. The Potters struggled without his goals and found themselves relegated at the end of the 1997/98 season. Sheron also struggled to hit the same goalscoring form he'd shown at Stoke, scoring 20 goals in 69 games while at Loftus Road. He later moved on to Barnsley (34 goals in 172 games), Blackpool (11 goals in 50 games) and Macclesfield Town (4 goals in 33 games). He eventually retired from professional football at Shrewsbury Town in 2005.

The Caldon Canal, From Leek to Frogall by narrowboat
This is the second of 2 videos that capture the full length of the Caldon Canal as part of our narrowboat journey. The previous video took us from Etruria at the junction with the Trent and Mersey Canal to the end of the Leek Branch.
This video retraces our steps from Leek back to where this branch meets the main line and then on to its terminus at Frogall.
The canal is one of my favourites because it has something for everyone. From the bustle of our industrial past in Potteries, there are locks, lift bridges, steam and water mills, winding river sections, a steam railway and some wonderful public houses to visit along the way.
