New Zealand Trains: Weka Pass Railway - Waikari to Glenmark
The Weka Pass Railway is about an hours drive north of Christchurch, on New Zealand’s south island. It has been run by volunteers since 1983.
The 13km trip runs between Glenmark station in Waipara, and Waikari, across the Weka Pass
The diesel loco was DG770, built by the English Electric Company & Vulcan Foundry Limited, England in 1955.
Steepest Mainline Railway Grade (New Zealand)
Although quite short in length, this section of 1 in 32 (3.1%) gradient, south of Helensville on the North Auckland Line, is the steepest equal mainline gradient in the North Island (the other 1 in 32 is in Taranaki). Sorry about the shaking, it was extremely windy at the time.

Ka 942 to Arthur's Pass Winter 2014 (HD)
This is a 41 minute documentary showcasing Mainline Steam's Winter excursions for 2014 from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass behind New Zealand's most powerful operating steam locomotive Ka 942. Travel along this scenic line along the Canterbury Plains into the spectacular Southern Alps. This route is known as the Midland Line. Back in the days of steam Kb class locomotives ruled the rails between Christchurch and Arthur's Pass hauling goods and passenger trains. One of these locomotives has been preserved number 968 which is now currently stored at the Mainline Steam Christchurch depot. This route is known as Kb country. We include line side, pacing and on board shots. We also look at the Saturday before the excursion when the loco was being prepared for the big trip the next day. Finally to end this presentation we see the loco return to Mainline Steam and being turned and shut down which brings an end to the Winter Excursion Season. Enjoy the thunder, sound, smoke and steam as 942 powers her excursion trains through the most spectacular scenery in New Zealand. Enjoy!

Explore New Zealand's South Island with the TranzAlpine Train
New Zealand’s South Island is a pristine expanse of rugged landscapes, windy rivers and snow-capped mountain ranges. It's truly a spectacular sight – one that, before 30 years ago, was reserved for those who could traverse this wild terrain.
The TranzAlpine train has made traveling across the South Island accessible to travelers, and since 1987, has given riders a chance to see the small towns and beautiful vistas between Christchurch on the east coast and Greymouth on the west coast.
The ride is relatively short – just under 5 hours – but the journey feels like it passes by in an instant because there is so much to see. The route goes across the Canterbury Plains and passes through dramatic river valleys and gorges, 16 tunnels and across 4 viaducts.
Passengers can enjoy the picturesque scenery of beech forests, lakes and the Southern Alps from the open-air viewing carriage or while enjoying a meal in the self-service buffet car. It’s a journey that is both adventurous and luxurious.
There’s a reason why the TranzAlpine is considered one of the world’s most beautiful train rides. Here are 10 sights you’ll see that prove it.

Taking the TranzAlpine Train
I needed to cut across the South Island in New Zealand. With my love of trains, there was no other way I'd consider other than the TranzAlpine Train when going from Greymouth to Christchurch.
I definitely loved the train. It was way more comfortable than any bus or plane I'd taken in New Zealand. Unfortunately, I had typical West Coast rainy weather departing from Greymouth so I couldn't get the best views. I had also taken a 4 hour bus before the train so I was tired and ended up sleeping half the time. Oops.
I'll be posting more information about how to take the TranzAlpine on my blog -
Much love and happy travels

Kathmandu Coast to Coast 2018 (NZL) – World multi-sport Championships - Best Of
Whakatane’s Sam Clark made it three wins in a row while South African Robyn Owen claimed her first win in today’s Kathmandu Coast to Coast World Championship Longest Day. The hyped women’s race lived up to expectations with Owen, who was second in her first attempt last year, storming through the mountain run and kayak to build a 20 minute lead heading into a nervous final 70 kilometer bike leg admitting she was “riding scared.” 2013 and 2011 Coast to Coast winner and three-time world champion adventure racer Sophie Hart gained on Owen on the final bike leg only to run out of road to finish second just three minutes and 50 seconds behind Owen’s winning time of 12 hours and 44 minutes. In a tight battle for the final podium spot Simone Maier was third ahead of defending champion Elina Ussher and Corrinne O’Donnell. “It’s so good to get the result after all the hard work over the last few months,” Owen said. “It’s been a phenomenal goal and it’s great to be back here in New Zealand. I was pretty sure Sophie was catching me on the final bike and I was tied, feeling pretty spent after the paddle, so was so happy to hold on.”
Clark warmed up on the first bike leg working comfortably in a breakaway of 11 riders that contained all the pre-race favourites. The two-time winner got away with Australian Alex Hunt and Hamish Elliott on the mountain run as the three put some distance on the rest of the field with Elliott first to drop off the pace and then Clark distanced Hunt on the final climb to Goat Pass, before descending into the Mingha Valley to come out of the run at Klondyke with a three minute lead over Southlander Elliot with Hunt a further four minutes back.
The kayak leg saw Clark really put the hammer down to be 18 minutes ahead of Hunt heading into the final cycle leg to eventually win in a time of 11 hours and 14 minutes. Hunt was second coming home 30 minutes behind Clark with another Australian James Pretto narrowly beating Kiwi Andrew Sclater to claim third ten minutes after Hunt.
Orienteering and adventure racing champion Chris Forne, who only decided to enter the event two weeks ago, was a creditable fifth only one minute behind Sclater in his first Kathmandu Coast to Coast. “Last year’s win was such a big thing for my career as it added credibility to my efforts as an athlete,” Clark said. “To come back and make it three it puts me amongst some pretty lofty company. It’s called the longest day for a reason, and what a long day it is. There’s no better feeling in the world, this is the greatest race.”
In the two-day event Oliver Thompson won the men’s individual event in 12 hours and 21minutes beating Mathew Clough by two minutes and forty eight seconds while Jennifer Walker claimed the women’s two day individual honours winning in 13 hours and 12 minutes, twenty four minutes ahead of Florence Van Dyke.
First and last out’s Ryan Kiesanowski and Nathan Peterson increased their overnight lead over Team Thule NZ’s Hamish Fleming and Samuel Goodall in the two person men’s team to win in eleven hours and one minutes.
