Kanazawa Station 金沢駅, Japan 2016 [Sony AX53]
Wow can only begin to describe my first impression of Kanazawa 金沢市. After leaving the train we were welcomed by such amazing Japanese architecture all around. The Tsuzumi gate at the entrance was just gorgeous and breath taking. We did not make it 5 feet out the door before we had to stop to take it all in.... and this was just the train station! If Kanazawa station was this amazing, I could not wait to discover what else the city had to offer.

Kanazawa Station: The Hospitality Dome and Drum Gate | Nippon.com: Japan in Video
Kanazawa Station is the terminus of the Hokuriku Shinkansen, a bullet-train line connecting Tokyo and the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture in two and a half hours. It has been cited by Travel + Leisure magazine as one of the world’s most beautiful train stations.
As part of the work to improve the station’s environs in advance of the line’s opening in 2015, a “Hospitality Dome” (Motenashi Dōmu) was built to cover the area outside the east gate. Consisting of 3,019 panes of glass supported by a frame of aluminum, the dome extends hospitality (motenashi) to visitors by providing a great umbrella to shelter them from Kanazawa’s frequent rain and heavy winter snow as they emerge from the station.
Just outside this dome is the Drum Gate (Tsuzumi-mon), a distinctive structure with a large curved roof supported by two massive pillars made of slanted beams of wood. The shape of these pillars evokes the drums used in the Nō theater performances that are part of the region’s tradition.

Tokyo to Kanazawa on the Hokuriku Shinkansen _
The Hakutaka is the slower of the two train categories that run along the entire length of the Hokuriku Shinkansen. It skips many stations between Tokyo and Nagano, but stops at most of the stations beyond Nagano. The Hakutaka features the same train sets as the Kagayaki, but it does offer non-reserved seating. It requires 20 to 50 minutes longer than the Kagayaki to make the trip between Tokyo and Kanazawa.
Kanazawa Station is one of the world's most beautiful stations.
There is a glass dome called Motenashi (Welcome) Dome, which looks like a huge umbrella, at the east entrance of Kanazawa Station. The dome has a wooden gate called Tsuzumi-mon, which symbolizes a traditional Japanese instrument called tsuzumi (hand drums). The underground of the dome serves as an information corner and event space.
In recent years, the area has become a busier shopping quarter with the construction of large-sized shopping buildings.
Kenrokuen (兼六園) in Kanazawa is justifiably classified as one of Japan's three most beautiful landscape gardens alongside Mito's Kairakuen and Okayama's Korakuen.
The name Kenrokuen literally means Garden of the Six Sublimities, referring to spaciousness, seclusion, artificiality, antiquity, abundant water and broad views, which according to Chinese landscape theory are the six essential attributes that make up a perfect garden. A stroll around Kenrokuen will help with understanding this landscape theory as the grounds are teeming with water features, bridges, teahouses, trees, flowers, stones, viewpoints and hidden nooks to discover.
Water is diverted from a distant river by a sophisticated water system constructed in 1632 to feed Kenrokuen's various streams and ponds including the two main ponds in the garden, Kasumigaike and Hisagoike. The over two-meter tall Kotojitoro Lantern,(resembling a Japanese harp, kojo_) uniquely built with two legs instead of one, stands at the northern bank of Kasumigaike Pond and is an iconic symbol of Kenrokuen. In addition, a fountain below Kasumigaike Pond is one of Japan's oldest, and is powered by the drop in elevation from the pond which causes water to shoot out 3.5 meters high. Meanwhile, nearby Hisagoike Pond features a small waterfall.
Stopped by the 21st Century Museum to see the Leandro Erlich's Swimming Pool, a pool where people appear to be underwater (entry inside the pool requires paid admission);
Lastly had time only for Nagamachi (長町) _ a samurai district located at the foot of the former Kanazawa Castle, where samurai and their families used to reside. The area preserves a historic atmosphere with its remaining samurai residences, earthen walls, private entrance gates, narrow lanes and water canals.
