Viewing notes:
A few notes to accompany this particular documentary. Behind the scenes, The Carlton Cinema was certainly the most troubled production in our “Tuebrook Explored” series of local history films. The production had been on and off for nearly 5 years, with numerous false starts and hopes to gain permission to film constantly thwarted as the building went through numerous demolition contracts, and of course while all this crawled on, the building continued to deteriorate.
Then there were the difficulties in actually filming inside in main due to the general condition and lack of lighting in the building. Although structurally sound there was a lot of overhead damage, unsteady footing and vandalism due to it being abandoned for the 35 years, making it the most dangerous filming location to date, cuts, knocks and bruises galore over several visits to get this building documented.
Then there were the sonics and sound issues due to the location, the cinema was sited on a busy corner with various lanes of traffic creating distracting ambient noise from several angles as we filmed. These were just a few of the issues unseen and heard by the viewer and which we were up against making this film, including the limited time we had when finally granted permission as demolition had already commenced. Perhaps it was fate, but it finally fell in our laps in November 2017, demolition commenced and local history was finally captured and just in the nick of time.
The music throughout this feature bar one track “Forgotten Hero”, was written especially for the episode, I wanted to create a reflective yet empty ambience in what was once a busy theatre and cinema attracting thousands, but one sadly reduced to a shadow of its former self.
So, what was planned as potentially the first episode of Tuebrook Explored ended up becoming the last, however in my own humble opinion the last is most certainly not the least, from planning through to its final editing, it’s always been a very personal episode for me, seeing the building virtually every day in passing, it was always so near, yet so far away.
I, like many others visited the cinema many many times over the years and I hope this documentary will bring back some memories for those who visited, and will stand as a lasting tribute to what was once a grand building providing entertainment for thousands… The Carlton Cinema.

Three lanes merge into two on Edge Lane. Far right lane should give-way. Or speed past traffic behind me and cut me off. Either way.
