Cockburn Town (/ˈkoʊbərn/ KOH-bərn)[1][2] is the capital city of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Cockburn Town is located on the largest island in the Turks Islands archipelago, Grand Turk Island. Historic 18th and 19th century Bermudian architecture line Duke and Front Streets in the town. The town is known for its long, narrow streets and old street lamps.
The closest anchorage to Cockburn Town is Hawk's Nest Anchorage, which, though sheltered, should only be entered in good light because of reefs near the entrance.
History[edit]
The seat of government ever since 1766, Cockburn Town was the first permanent settlement on any of the islands, founded in 1681 by salt collectors who arrived in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The city supposedly lies on the place where Juan Ponce de León first landed on the island.
Main sights[edit]
National Museum[edit]
National Museum on Front Street
Cockburn Town is home to the Turks & Caicos National Museum, which is housed in the colonial-era Guinep House, on Front Street. The house is believed to be over 180 years old and much of its structural material came from local shipwrecks, including a ship's mast, which is one of the building's main supports. The site was donated to the Museum in 1990.[3]
Among the National Museum's collections is an exhibit of shipwrecks, including the oldest known European shipwreck in the Americas, the Molasses Reef Wreck, dated 1505.[4]
Other exhibits detail the history of the Lucayans, the Space Race, Turks and Caicos postage stamps, slavery and the history of the slave trade, the sisal and salt industries, royal events, as well as a general history of the islands. The museum also maintains a garden, which is adjacent to the Guinep House.[5]
Also of interest are the museum's research projects, including its Message in a Bottle Project, recording nearly 40 years' worth of messages to wash upon the shores of Grand Turk.[6]
Her Majesty's Prison[edit]
Her Majesty's Prison on Pond Street was built in the 1830s and remained in operation until 1994. In addition to the main cell block and offices for prison officials, it hosts a bell tower and its own museum.[7]

Grand Turk Real Estate - Sunny Side Home for Sale
Located within close proximity to the Turks & Caicos National Museum, next to the historical Masonic lodge, this iconic Grand Turk property, is one the last, fully intact, historical landmarks of the Turks & Caicos capital. An architectural gem, few of which can still be found in as mint a condition, Sunny Side as built on the island of South Caicos in 1875, only to dismantled and moved to Grand Turk in the late 1800s. A prime example of Bermuda architecture, the interior still showcases components of historical sailing ships, which were used in its construction, such as the imposing ships quarter knees. Fully renovated and refurbished, features two bedrooms and two baths on the lower level, as well as large kitchen, modern appliances and hurricane proof windows. An attic studio upstairs, ideal for conversion into a guest room or “set deck”, as well a large cellar, perfect for usage as a wine cellar, add to the uniqueness of this Grand Turk gem. Exterior elements include a good size yard as well an over ground, fresh water cistern. The sale of this property, includes an ocean front lot, opposite the main house, perfect for that sunset drink or even a commercial venture consistent with many others in this central location who take advantage of the vast number of Cruise ship patrons’ site seeing Grand Turk for the day.

More about the Turks & Caicos National Museum:
In 2007, the Waitt Institute for Discovery partnered with Ships of Discovery and the Turks and Caicos National Museum for this exploratory survey of the Endymion Rock area. Leading the expedition as Principal Investigator was Dr. Donald H. Keith, a nautical archaeologist and trustee of the Turks and Caicos National Museum. The two-week expedition documented the current state of the H.M.S Endymion, searched the site for other shipwrecks, and discovered the identity of the Endymions Companion Wreck.

The Turks and Caicos Islands, archipelagos comprised of 40 low-lying and mostly undeveloped islands boast miles of white powdery beaches, superb diving, accommodations, and gourmet restaurants. Much of the underwater excitement is found off the Turks, where wall dives are outstanding, and along West Caicos and Provo. Sport fishing is a big international draw, and the mangrove salt flats offer a prime habitat for bonefish.
Providenciales (known as Provo) is the hub for tourism. The island's crowning glory is Grace Bay, a 12 mile stretch of velvety sand. Also on Provo, bird watchers enjoy acres of inland lakes frequented by white herons and pink flamingos. Just a dozen miles from Provo is North Caicos, which receives the most rainfall, making it notably greener with tall trees and lush vegetation. The southern part of North Caicos is swampy, with broad estuaries that are home to a vast colony of West Indian flamingoes. North Caicos is popular with vacation-home buyers, especially around Whitby, with its stunning seven-mile beach.

Grand Turk Island Tour by Scooter, Turks and Caicos - Caribbean Princess Cruise
Here is a short tour of Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos as we rode scooters around the island. We saw many wild horses and donkeys. We visited the lighthouse at the northern tip of the island, as well as the Salt House (museum and gift shop).

Discover Grand Turk's Salt History
In October 2018, students of Providenciales Middle School flew over to Grand Turk to explore the island's rich history of salt production. Setting down after a stunning fly-over of Grand Turk's salinas, students set off with a thirst for knowledge and discovery. We weren't disappointed!
Hosted by the wonderful staff of The Osprey Hotel, we traveled to the National Museum via the historic Front Street and central salinas. We also caught a short boat ride to neighbouring Salt Cay to further learn how these Salt Islands' heritage is kept alive by the warm and passionate people living there.
The quiet beauty of Grand Turk, its deep history and the stunning scenery of the island mean we can't wait for our next visit!
