Turtle Release at MaiKhao
Special Report for weekly Andaman News NBT TV (VHF dial) at 8.30am broadcast to Phang Nga, Krabi & Phuket provinces & FM108 Mazz radio at 7pm, Thursday 3rd March, 2011 & & YouTube.com/AndamanNews Send comments to AndamanNews@yahoo.com
Recently at the JW Marriott Resort & Spa Phuket on Mai Khoa Beach, the Mai Khoa Marine Turtle Foundation held the New Year New Life event to ceremoniously release the turtles to the sea, as well as to raise funds for its operation. It was attended by over 200 people, comprising residents and hotel guests, many of which generously donated 3,000 Baht to get a chance to personally release a turtle to the sea.
Many children, and even some adults, are thrilled to have seen these rare animals in real life for the first time.
Mai Khao beach used to be home for sea turtle to lay eggs, but the number of nests declined in recent years . That's the main reason why a hotel like the JW Marriott Resort & Spa is putting its efforts in organizing such activity. Robert Lorhmann GM of the JW Marriott Resort & Spa said the hotel has been collaborating with other nearby resorts and many local organizations to at least promote awareness for the marine animal conservation.
Robert also handed over 600,000 Baht to the Phuket Marine Biological Center in support of their marine turtle conservation projects.
Mr. Kongkiat Kittiwattanawong, Marine Biologist and Head of the Marine Endangered Species Unit at the Phuket Marine Biological Center said that the marine turtles in the area are on the verge of extinction, due to warmer sea temperature caused by global warming, and the growing tourism industry which inhibits the turtles' nesting on the beach.
While there are usually 50 nests found yearly, this year the number dramatically dropped to 2. The nests were located at Pra Thong Island in Phang Nga Province. No nests were found at the usual nesting areas of Mai Khoa Beach of Phuket and Tai Muang Beach of Phang Nga, which is an alarming sign that these beautiful and magnificent creatures may soon be gone forever.
However, with events like today, the awareness of endangered animals is raised, while the chances of survival of the turtles are significantly increased. Hopefully, it won't be too little, too late.
If you would like to join in the conservation of the marine turtle, contact the Mai Khoa Marine Turtle Foundation (info@maikhaoturtles.com) at 076-338000 or the Phuket Marine Biological Center (pmbc@dmcr.go.th) at 076-391128.
