A String Of Pearls: American Marines in New Zealand 1942 - 1944 WW2.
Few people realise that during WW2 and over a two year period 20,000 USA Marines lived and trained in New Zealand for the bloody battles to follow in Tarawa and Guadalcanal and others places in the Pacific.
Many USA Marines died in these battles, directly after their stay in New Zealand, and those who survived are now telling their stories of their special relationship with New Zealand, all because of the war that forced them onto our shores.
Joan Ellis (nee Love), who was a young kiwi girl in the Hutt Valley, New Zealand, and whose family billeted Marines, has chronicled their stories in two marvellous books, A String Of Pearls and Follow Me Back in Time. The stories are beautiful, poignant and heart rending and a must for Kiwis and Americans to read Lest we Forget.
Copies of the book are available in all leading bookstores, or you can contact Joan directly here:
Frank Zalot - a survivor's tale
Wartime censorship meant that newspapers were strictly limited in what they could write about the American military presence in New Zealand during the Second World War. One unfortunate episode never reported - and the subject of much rumour at the time - was the drowning of 10 United States Navy personnel during a training exercise off the Paekākāriki coast near Wellington in June 1943. In this film, one of the survivors, Frank Zalot Jnr, finally reveals the true story of the tragedy and its aftermath.

Frank was interviewed during a visit to New Zealand in 2012 during which he attended the unveiling of a memorial to the US Navy personnel who died.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
