Silver Lake Trail on the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest in Utah
Near the Brighton ski resort in Big Cottonwood Canyon on the Salt Lake Ranger District, the Silver Lake Loop Trail follows a boardwalk around Silver Lake. Elevation gain is 30 feet. The boardwalk is provided to protect the wetland environment. Please stay on the boardwalk at all times. The trail provides access for fishing piers. The Silver Lake Boardwalk accesses the Brighton Lakes Trail. The visitor's center has restrooms and a drinking fountain. Please be cautious of moose that live in the area. Do not approach any moose you may encounter on or near trails. Moose may seem calm and tame, but they are not! Moose are wild and unpredictable. For your own safety, please avoid these animals. Please do not pick any wildflowers. Picking wildflowers prevents them from blooming the following year. Please leave them so that others may enjoy them! Directions to get there: Access #1: Via Big Cottonwood Canyon Road (7000 South Wasatch Blvd) about 14.2 miles up the canyon to the Silver Lake Visitor's Center parking area across from the Brighton Store on the west side of the road. Trail begins behind the Visitor's Center (boarded walkway). Access #2: Same as above but follow the road around the circle to Majestic Lodge. Trailhead begins behind the lodge. Follow directions to Twin Lakes Reservoir and Silver Lake.
Salt Lake City Watershed Restrictions apply and are strictly enforced. Backcountry camping is not permitted within 200 ft of any open water (lakes, streams, etc). Pets are not allowed at all (not even in your car!). Swimming is not allowed in lakes or streams. Visitors must carry out everything they bring in, including food scraps and fruit peels. Follow general Leave No Trace guidelines for disposal of human waste. Pollution of any kind will not be accepted. Watershed regulations are enforced by the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office, the Salt Lake City Water Department, the Salt Lake City - County Health Department, the US Forest Service, and the Alta Marshal's Office. Violations constitute a Class B misdemeanor and in most cases a citation is issued to violators.

Riding The Cache Forest In Northern Utah
The lands managed by the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest have a diverse history. For perhaps 15,000 years this area was home to Native Americans who made their living by hunting and gathering, with one known brief episode of horticulture.
By the time of white settlement in this area, the ancestors of the first Americans were organized into groups historically known as the Ute, Goshute, and the Northwestern Shoshone. As Euro-Americans moved west, Free Trappers scoured the mountains and valleys for the furs that fueled the early frontier economy, which in time had a global economic impact. Beginning in the 1840's, the area served as the anchor point for pioneers belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS), as they settled throughout the Great Basin and the Intermountain West. Historic Stone Quarries located on the Forest today supplied the materials for the famous LDS Temple in Salt Lake City. Timber harvested from the Forests that would become the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache, was shaped into the railroad ties that connected the Nation at Promontory Point in 1869. These public lands have a long history of multiple use, a tradition that continues today under the management of the USFS.

Cross country skiing does not get any better than this. Join a casual ski trip around the Solitude Nordic trails at the head of the Brighton Bowl. This is Utah's cross country track for mountain terrain, Engelmann spruce, sub-alpine fir, and the sun soaked Silver Lake meadow. The morning was back to winter with a foot of new snow, minus six degrees Fahrenheit warming into the low teens, and squeaky cold snow.

Twin Lakes, Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah - July 2017
Shot on iPhone and edited on GoPro's Quik app.
Ember is big enough to take out in the Kid Comfort 3 - technically this is our second hike using the KC3 but my phone didn't take to a waterfall too well. The KC3 really is the BMW of kid carriers. I had it loaded with a ton of supplies and Ember but still didn't feel much of the weight (thanks German engineering!). As for Ember? She loved the trip just hooting and hollering the whole time as we walked under trees, through waterfalls and climbed down cliffs.
For this hike Chelsea, Luke, Ember and I ventured up to Twin Lakes in Big Cottonwood Canyon. After the short, steep trail from Silver Lake we decided to find a new path down to our car. Basically we found our way over to Lake Mary under the shadow of Mt. Wolverine.
Awesome hike for any family living or visiting Utah.
