We're Going Underground - RÉSO, Montreal's Underground City (33)
Downtown Montreal is home to the world's largest underground city also known as RÉSO. All together there are 32 kms/19 miles of tunnels to explore. What is an underground city? It is a network of office towers, malls, restaurants, coffee shops, public transit stations, performing arts venues, a movie theater and other miscellaneous commercial buildings. It's a great way to shelter yourself from the weather while commuting to school or work. Once you get on the train/metro in the morning, you could be potentially be indoors up until the time you get to your stop on the way home. The best part is that you can pick up your coffee/tea/breakfast/lunch/dinner along the way.
Although some of the network is on ground level, most of it winds under the city by way of these tunnels. It is estimated that over 500,000 people use the network every day during the city's long winters. It is climate controlled, well-lit and is arranged in a U shape. You can see a map of the city here:
We are native Montrealers and thought we knew the tunnels well but were surprised by the extent of it. It took us a little over two hours to walk from Place-des-Arts to the Eaton Center. That is the main section of the network but it still branches off into many more subsections. Winters here are very cold and spring and fall are very rainy and this is a commuter city. We love our BMW (bus, metro, walk)!

The Underground City (French: La ville souterraine), is the name applied to a series of interconnected office towers, hotels, shopping centres, residential and commercial complexes, convention halls, universities and performing arts venues that form the heart of Montreal's central business district, colloquially referred to as Downtown Montreal. The name refers to the underground connections between the buildings that compose the network, in addition to the network's complete integration with the city's entirely underground rapid transit system, the Montreal Metro. Moreover, the first iteration of the Underground City was developed out of the open pit at the southern entrance to the Mount Royal Tunnel, where Place Ville Marie and Central Station stand today.

Famous Underground City - Montreal
The network is particularly useful during Montreal's long winters, during which time well over half a million citizens are estimated to use it every day. The network is largely climate controlled and well-lit, and is arranged in a u-shape with two principal north–south axes connected by an east–west axis. Combined, there are 32 kilometres' worth of tunnels over twelve square kilometres of the most densely populated part of Montreal. In total, there are more than 120 exterior access points to the network, not including the sixty or so Métro stations located outside the official limits of the Réso, some of which have their own smaller tunnel networks. Some of the city's larger institutions, namely McGill University, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Concordia University and the Université de Montréal, also have campus tunnel networks separate from the Underground City.
RESO | Montreal's Underground City
Je Suis Montrealaise | The Underground City
Montreal is known for one of the largest underground city networks in the country. The underground city, also known as La ville souterrain or simply, the RESO (a nice play on the French word, reseau) spans a considerable 32km over 12 squared kilometer area within the downtown core. This video gives you an idea of what the RESO is, and what it has to offer.
I was lucky enough to stumble upon the ArtSouterrain, which is an annual festival held for three weeks within the month of March. This festival strives to promote local talent by placing several exhibits throughout the intricate pathways of the RESO. It's able to de-instutionalize art and bring it to the forefront and center of everyone's commute.
The festival will conclude by the 26th of March. Definitely check out artsouterrain.com for more information (I am not affiliated with the festival in any shape or form - I was just happy I came across it).
Have you ever been to the RESO? What are your thoughts on it? Does your city have its own underground? Let me know!
If you're a Montrealer, are there any topics of the city you'd like me to cover? Please send me a shout!

The Most HIDDEN Underground Cities
Have you ever imagined a life without the sun? How could we possibly survive? Today we'll show you how with the most impressive underground cities!
1. GROWING UNDERGROUND, LONDON:
In this city located in an old war bunker in London, they managed to sustain a whole farm. This seems almost impossible, however they did it by using a hydroponic, vertical, pesticide-free system. Also, they use the space much more efficiently, saving 70% of the water used on it.
2. EARTHSCRAPER, MEXICO CITY:
As you had already imagined, this is the complete opposite building to a skyscrapers, as it goes down towards the Earth core. 65 stories to be precise. It has a pyramid-shaped design and an open central space where daylight can flood in to the depths of the earth.
3. THE LOWLINE, NEW YORK:
The Lowline is a project based on the success of the Highline, an abandoned elevated railway converted into a lush public space. The aim is to give an unused trolley terminal a makeover. It's expected to be opened by 2020. The natural light would be directed below ground using a system called remote skylights based on parabolic reflectors and optic fiber cables.
4. RÉSO, MONTREAL:
This is the largest subterranean complex in the world and has been in use since the 1960s. It's a way of hiding from the terrible cold temperatures they suffer. We can find multi-level shopping centers, hotels, restaurants and metro stations. All linked by tunnels.
5. UNDERGROUND CITY, HELSINKI:
This underground city includes more than 125 miles of tunnels filled with everything you would expect in an overground city, and the best thing is that they have plans to continue to expand the subterranean public spaces.
6. SUBTROPOLIS, KANSAS CITY:
This city occupies 1,100 acres of abandoned limestone mines since 1964. More than 1,600 people work in this naturally climate-controlled, rock-carved space every day. We can find subTropolis houses and everything from cave-aged cheese to car storage space, and an array of small businesses. Also it naturally maintains temperatures between 18 and 21 °C all year-round.
7. UNDERGROUND SCIENCE CITY, SINGAPORE:
In Singapore they've had a space problem for a long time. So they designed this Underground Science City for up to 4,200 scientists, researchers, and professionals in Research and Development facilities. But also, there are many restaurants and shopping malls.
9) Burlington, U.K.
This is a city built by the British Government in 1955 in case of a nuclear attack. A 35-acre network of hidden entrances, streets, canteens, and purpose-built rooms to house the Prime Minister, the entire British government and the Royal Family. It even had a telephone switchboard and a hospital inside. However it's been closed off since 1991.
10) Derinkuyu, Turkey
This is an ancient multi-level underground city extending to a depth of approximately 60 metres. It is large enough to have sheltered as many as 20,000 people together with their livestock and food stores. This city could be closed from the inside with huge stone doors and had ventilation and running water.

World's Largest Underground City
An underground city is a series of linked subterranean spaces that may provide a defensive refuge; a place for living, working or shopping; a transit system; mausolea; wine or storage cellars; cisterns or drainage channels; or several of these. The term may also refer to a network of tunnels that connects buildings beneath street level.[citation needed], which may house office blocks, shopping malls, metro stations, theatres, and other attractions. These passages can usually be accessed through the public space of any of the buildings connecting to them, and sometimes have separate entries as well. This latter definition encompasses many modern structures, whereas the former more generally covers tunnel systems from ancient times to the present day.
