Vilnius In Your Pocket - Užupis
Vilnius In Your Pocket visits Užupis. Before the war the strange and exotic district of Užupis (which means 'over the river') was one of the main Jewish parts of the city. During the Soviet occupation Užupis was adopted by artists and other non-conformists and it acquired a reputation as the Lithuanian Montmartre. After Old Town, Užupis is the most popular place to visit. In 1997 it declared independence, and the 'Republic of Užupis' now has its own president, flag, army and constitution. Užupis Independence Day is on April 1 and if you want to visit on this day you may be approached by one of the Republic's soldiers and asked for your passport before you're allowed to cross the bridge.

LEAD IN :
For one day in the year, every year the Uzupis Republic marks its 'national day'.
For the rest of the year it is an artists' district in the heart of the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.
This April 1, the Uzupis Republic celebrated its 10th anniversary of its playful independence.
STORYLINE:
Uzupis which means place beyond the river is actually a district of Bohemian types in the heart of the Lithuanian capital city Vilnius.
In 1997 the group decided to enliven their artistic environment by declaring independence from the rest of the city.
Since 1997, the neighbourhood's 30,000 residents celebrate their mini-republic's birthday with a parade and festivities on April 1.
Uzupis has its own constitution, president, airport, fleet, customs and until recently an army of 10 men, which was dissolved when Lithuania joined NATO three years ago.
Do not defeat. Do not fight back. Do not surrender, the constitution of Uzupis reads.
People are checked as they come in and out of the republic.
But border guard Andrius Krivis says monitoring people is not always easy.
Once an impoverished artists neighbourhood where flats sold for prices as low as US$2000, now Uzupis is a fancy neighbourhood dotted with galleries, artists' workshops and fashionable cafes.
Like any nation-state, Uzupis has several ambassadors.
