Vilnius, Impressions of the Republic of Uzupis - Lithuania 4K Travel Channel
Uzupis means on the other side of the river. The neighborhood Uzupis was for a long time the poorhouse of Vilnius. Later, workers' settlements emerged here until artists discovered the district for themselves. Today it is developing into a sought-after residential district. Since the artists declared it the independent Republic of Uzupis, it is also known by tourists.
Actually, we want to eat something in a restaurant on the banks of the Vilnia, but there Giedrius Jonaitis addresses us. He wants to show us a little about the Republic of Uzupis. Above all, he knows a very good place to eat, off the beaten path. We are curious and join him.
He accompanies us to the Šnekutis an original inexpensive restaurant with very good local cuisine. We could eat outside on a small terrace.
During the meal, he tells us a little bit about his life. He has a professorship at the College of Art, which at the time of our stay is resting due to illness. But he wanted to work on overcoming them and to return to his professorship.
Later he suggested to make a picture of Ursula. We agree and then go to Upartas. The carpenter workshop belongs to one of his friends, who produces picture frames for him. Here we learn that Giedrius is also called the father of Lithuanian banknotes, because he designed them. These were in circulation until the introduction of the Euro. As part of this activity Giedrius also visited Giesecke & Devrient in Munich once; the place where one prints the banknotes. In the workshop of Upartas, he also shows us some of his lithographs from earlier years. We really liked these.
We return to the center of Uzupis. Giedrius leads us into the backyard of a residential building. Some luxury cars park here, but he guides us via a wooden outside staircase to the first floor. The stairs are so dilapidated that we are afraid they might collapse. At the top, he introduces us to a friend. He lives here in two rooms without electricity and without water.
We stay only briefly. Then we go to the angel of Uzupis. Next to it is a small original bar, the Spunka. Giedrius seems to know all the guests and of course the innkeeper. The bar is frequented only by locals.

I did shoot these clips one year ago, on July 22nd and 25th, 2016 to be precise. Maybe you don't really see in the video, because I adjusted the colors in post-production, but it was cloudy and rainy during these days. But Vilnius has its charm even during bad weather. It's one of my favorite cities in Europe.

Užupis is a neighborhood in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, largely located in Vilnius' old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Užupis means the other side of the river in the Lithuanian language and refers to the Vilnia River; the name Vilnius was derived from the Vilnia. The district has been popular with artists for some time, and has been compared to Montmartre in Paris and to Freetown Christiania in Copenhagen, due to its bohemic and laissez-faire atmosphere. On April 1, 1997, the district declared itself an independent republic (The Republic of Užupis). Since the first of November 2014 Jaap van Ark is president of republic Užupis. Užupis is quite small and isolated, being only about 148 acres (0.60 km2) in size; it has around 7,000 inhabitants, nearly 1,000 being artists. On one side it is separated from the Old Town by the Vilnia River, on the second there are steep hills, and on the third side it borders on an industrial area built under soviet rule, which is now to be rebuilt into a fashionable district. The first bridges across the river were built in the 16th century, at which time the district's inhabitants were mostly Jewish. In 1997, the residents of the area declared the Republic of Užupis, along with its own flag, currency, president, cabinet of ministers, a constitution written by Romas Lileikis and Thomas Chepaitis, an anthem, and an army (numbering approximately 11 men). They celebrate this independence annually on Užupis Day, which falls on April 1. Artistic endeavours are the main preoccupation of the Republic; the former President of the Republic of Užupis, Romas Lileikis, is himself a poet, musician, and film director.
Artūras Zuokas, a former mayor of Vilnius, lives in Užupis and frequently takes part in the Republic's events. Užupis does not house internet-cafes, kiosks, big malls, or governmental institutions (except Užupian), and there is no embassy to Lithuania. It is unclear whether the statehood of the Republic, recognized by no government, is intended to be serious, tongue-in-cheek, or a combination of both. The decision to place Užupis Day on April 1 (April Fools' Day) may not be coincidental, emphasizing the importance of humor and non-importance of serious political decisions. The flag of the Republic contains a palm of hand in a white background. Each season the palm emblem has another color: Winter - blue, Spring - green, Summer - yellow, Autumn – red. On April 1, 2002, a statue of an angel blowing a trumpet was unveiled in the main square. The idea was developed from a desire to erect an angel in memory of animator and caricaturist Zenonas Šteinys. It became a symbol of the revival Užupis. The funds were raised by selling miniature copies of the sculpture. The sculptor, Romas Vilčiauskas, is also the creator of the Užupis Mermaid.
Previously, a temporary sculpture of an egg stood in its place. The egg itself became the subject of various anecdotes. After being replaced by the larger statue of Gabriel, the egg was sold at an auction for 10,200 litas and now stands on Pylimo street.Wikipedia
Vilnius neighbourhoods: Užupis
Welcome to Užupis, Vilnius' most eccentric neighbourhood! Located just across the Vilnia River from the Old Town, Užupis (jokingly) claims itself to be an independent republic and represents the more bohemian and artsy side of the city. With its chic shops and galleries, hip food and drink scene, and an angel keeping watch over the neighbourhood, Užupis can’t me missed!

Literatu St

LEAD IN :
For one day in the year, every year the Uzupis Republic marks its 'national day'.
For the rest of the year it is an artists' district in the heart of the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.
This April 1, the Uzupis Republic celebrated its 10th anniversary of its playful independence.
STORYLINE:
Uzupis which means place beyond the river is actually a district of Bohemian types in the heart of the Lithuanian capital city Vilnius.
In 1997 the group decided to enliven their artistic environment by declaring independence from the rest of the city.
Since 1997, the neighbourhood's 30,000 residents celebrate their mini-republic's birthday with a parade and festivities on April 1.
Uzupis has its own constitution, president, airport, fleet, customs and until recently an army of 10 men, which was dissolved when Lithuania joined NATO three years ago.
Do not defeat. Do not fight back. Do not surrender, the constitution of Uzupis reads.
People are checked as they come in and out of the republic.
But border guard Andrius Krivis says monitoring people is not always easy.
Once an impoverished artists neighbourhood where flats sold for prices as low as US$2000, now Uzupis is a fancy neighbourhood dotted with galleries, artists' workshops and fashionable cafes.
Like any nation-state, Uzupis has several ambassadors.
