Dance of the Little Swans Extended version 48 min. Vaganova Ballet Academy Auditions Young Dancers
Extended version. Director's cut. Many young girls dream of becoming ballerinas, but only very few are prepared to apply the all-out effort and make the sacrifices that this dream demands. The famous Vaganova Ballet Academy in St.Petersburg welcomes the most talented and determined young dancers, but it makes them no promises.
Being a professional ballet dancer is an exhausting job. To live a fairy-tale on stage, ballet dancers have to suffer for their art behind the scenes: they follow a gruelling training schedule and stick to a strict diet. From an early age, they live in the ballet academy so that they can dedicate the most time possible to their training. As a consequence they are separated from their families. They leave their friends and their schools behind, and enter a new, very competitive environment, where it’s difficult to form friendships as their classmates are also their rivals.
However, young hopefuls who make these sacrifices may find they are not enough to achieve their dreams. On top of all their hard work, professional ballerinas must have the right physique and be good looking. Besides, the challenging training regime may lead to injuries that can potentially put an end to their careers.
Still, none of this deters young girls who are in love with dance and are determined to make it their career. They travel from across Russia to St. Petersburg, where they audition to enter the world-renowned Vaganova Ballet Academy. They are ready to trade a carefree childhood for a chance to become ballerinas and shine on stage. However, very few of them will be accepted to study in the famous academy since it has very high standards. As many of its past graduates have become international ballet stars, it has a rich heritage and a reputation that must be maintained.
Vaganova Ballet Academy was founded in 1738 by Imperial Decree of Empress Anna in the then-capital of Russia, St. Petersburg. Initially it was named the Imperial Ballet School, but as times and the country’s political systems changed, so did its titles. In 1957, the school was renamed in honour of its teacher, Agrippina Vaganova, who became famous for developing the method of classical ballet training that is still taught there.
Head of Vaganova Ballet Academy is Nikolay Tsiskaridze, former Principle Dancer of The Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. He holds the title of People's Artist of Russia and has received numerous other honours and accolades. Over his career, Nikolai Tsiskaridze has performed over 70 roles in major classical and contemporary ballets. Prior to joining the Vaganova Ballet School, he taught at the Bolshoi Theatre as well as at the Moscow Ballet Academy. He has been a member of the President's Council for Culture and Arts since 2011.
Today, the Academy has 340 students, and competition for a place here is extremely tough. Each year, thousands of children audition, but only around 70 are accepted. In total, only about half of each year's intake will complete the eight year curriculum and graduate. Those who persevere are rewarded with contracts with the leading ballet companies in Russia and abroad.
RT Doc meets some of the young hopefuls storming the doors of the famous Academy to find out more about the dream they share, and to follow them on their first steps towards achieving it.

Day 1, St. Petersburg: Vaganova Academy, Grishko and Mariinsky Theatre
Such a surreal day!
A few days ago I was just panicking if I would make it to my Vaganova academy teacher training and now I am here at the actual academy.
I finally saw the places that I only used to watch on my moms old Vaganova VHS tapes. The rooms and walking around halls were very much an overall amazing experience. The tradition is indeed very sacred to them.
Hopefully I will be able to update more!
All the best, FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE.

Ballerina Girls Vaganova Nutcracker Lopatkina Tsiskaridze Udalenkova Postizheva Shakirova Konogray
This Russian video is about the Vaganova Nutcracker performance from December 30, 2013, which has Ulyana Lopatkina talking early in the video.
The main indiviuduals shown in this video are
Nikolai Tsiskaridze, new rector of the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet
Larisa Georgevna Postizheva, a major heroine of the Vaganova children, who is always at the Mikhailovsky Theatre or Mariinsky Theatre when the Vaganova children rehearse and perform in the major company performances which use the Vaganova children. Every Mariinsky and Mikhailovsky dancer will know who Larisa is because she is always with the children at these theatres and most likely, she was with these professional dancers, when they were Vaganova students...
Tatiana Udalenkova, one of the greatest Vaganova teachers, having trained recent graduates such as Daria Vasnetsova, Oksana Marchuk and Valeria Zapasnikova. Her two current prodigies are Olga Makarova and the girl who danced the leading role of older Masha, Renata Shakirova.. Udalenkova is shown coaching the snow flakes with Tsiskaridze.
Polina Konogray, is the young girl playing Little Masha. Polina lives in St Petersburg with her grand-mother and is shown skyping her mother and brother, back at home, far away.
Renata Shakirova is Big Masha and as her teacher, Udalenkova tells us, Renata had danced Little Masha in her second year at Vaganova.

IFBC Noddy His First Day At Vaganova Academy St. Petersburg
Extraordinary Eleonora Sevenard Vaganova 6th Year Student Future Ballet Great
For me, Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet in Saint Petersburg, has a monopoly in producing great ballerinas. The list sometimes seems endless and the next addition to that list is Eleonora Sevenard. If she had just graduated, she would be extraordinary, but in September, she begins her 7th year classes and graduates in June 2017, 2 years from now. To imagine how Eleonora will dance in 2 years is staggering to even think about.
Eleonora was highly regarded from her first year at Vaganova, but she was not exceptional in her early years. As this video will show, Eleonora’s recent performances have shown that she already is ready to become a star with her only problem being that nobody makes a star out of a 6th year student, soon to become a 7th year student.
In Cavalry Bivouac, Eleonora shows that the back attitude turns, used in the Mariinsky black swan variation of Odile, are nothing for her. She could easily do double attitude turns and probably triple attitude turns. Next year, no 7th year student will be given Odette/Odile to dance at Mariinsky Theatre, but in the 2016 Vaganova graduation performances, Eleonora would excel in the black swan pas de deux. Going back to considering her Odette/Odile, in the last ballet in this video, Atonement or another translation, .Redemption, Eleonora displays an amazing back attitude balance to rival any prima ballerina Odette poses. Atonement has one section with an extraordianry pirouette where she executes a triple pioruette with her supporting leg bent and then straightens that leg while executing a gorgoeus renverse. Prima ballerinas do not do this, but Eleonora does. Shortly after that, she does a grand jete en tournant which most ballerinas dancing the role of Giselle wish they could execute as well as she does.
Atonement uses the same John Williams music from the movie, Schindler's List, which Svetlana Zakharova uses in her famous Revelation solo.
Eleonora has a younger sister at Vaganova Academy, Ksenia Sevenard.
Eleonora's progress will be of great interest to me. The world has much to look forward to in the coming years with this extraordinary talent.
If I was Mariinsky Ballet director, I would hire Eleonora as a coryphee with Odette/Odile on her 2015/16 season schedule. I would make her Mariinsky debut in the peasant pas de deux. In the difficult section where the girl does an unsupported double pirouette and the partner comes near her for her to grab his arm, Eleonora would easily do triples both times, while all, except Nikitina, falter sometimes on their doubles. Eleonora is so perfectly centered on her turns that she would be the first Mariinsky ballerina to do triples in this section..

Waganowa Ballettakademie Petersburg

#BMBT5D - Vaganova Classes with Vladimir Issaev
IMPORTANT: This DVD has been produced for Region 1 (US & Canada). You must have a player which plays this region code to use this DVD.
Vladimir Issaev, Choreographer and Ballet Master proudly presents this first DVD of The Vaganova Ballet Academy, featuring an authentic Vaganova Class at the prestigious Vaganova Ballet Academy in Saint Petersburg Russia.
Artistic Director, Mme. Altynay Asylmuratova, formerly prima ballerina of the Mariinsky Ballet (Kirov) introduces the class by highlighting the strong influence that Ballet Mistress Agrippina Vaganova produced in the Dance Method utilized by the greatest dancers in Ballet History.
The class is performed in the classroom where Agrippina Vaganova taught and Marius Petipa created his most magnificent ballets. This DVD is not interactive but rather a video stream with no chapters. It is subtitled and filmed in Russia in a documentary style. The only choreography created by Vaganova, a pas de deux for the ballet Diana & Actaeon is presented at the end of the film.
