Byodo-in Temple Valley of the Temples Oahu Hawaii United States Sacred Bell Buddhist Temple
The Byodo-In Temple is a non-denominational Buddhist temple located on the island of Oʻahu in Hawaiʻi in Valley of the Temples Memorial Park. It was dedicated in August 1968 to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaiʻi.
The temple is a replica of a 900-year-old Buddhist temple at Uji in Kyoto Prefecture of Japan. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a functioning Buddhist temple in the proper sense as it does not host a resident monastic community nor an active congregation. Inside the Byodo-In Temple is a 18 ft (5.5 m) statue of the Lotus Buddha, a wooden image depicting Amitābha. It is covered in gold and lacquer. Outside is a three-ton, brass peace bell. Surrounding the temple are large koi ponds that cover a total of 2 acres (0.81 ha). Around those ponds are lush Japanese gardens set against a backdrop of towering cliffs of the Koʻolau Range. The gardens are home to sparrows and peafowl. The temple covers 11,000 sq ft (1,000 m2).
The Byodo-In Temple is visited and used by thousands of worshipers from around the world. It welcomes people of all faiths to participate in its traditions. Apart from worship, the temple grounds are also used for weddings and office meetings.

Valley of the Temples Memorial Park is a memorial park located on the Windward (eastern) side of the Hawaiian island of Oʻahu. It is a vast area of lush, rolling green hills at the foot of the Koʻolau mountains, overlooking the sleepy town of Kāneʻohe. Thousands of Buddhist, Shinto, Protestant and Catholic residents of Hawaiʻi are buried in this memorial park.
The park features a 1968 replica of the 11th-century Phoenix Hall of the Byodo-In Buddhist temple complex in Uji, Japan. Inside the main part of the temple is a 9-ft Amida Buddha statue sitting on a gold lotus leaf.
Also on the grounds are large Catholic statues depicting the Passion of Christ, the Virgin Mary, various Catholic saints, crypts and mausoleums of some of the most influential people in Hawaiʻi. Most notable of those interred at the mausoleums of the Valley of the Temples is Walter F. Dillingham, Hawaiian entrepreneur and statesman. For a time, former Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos was interred at a private mausoleum overlooking the Byodo-In Temple.
The Byodo-In Temple is seen several times in the popular television show Lost as the estate of Sun-Hwa Kwon's father in the Season 1 episode, House of the Rising Sun, and is later used as the backdrop for Sun and Jin-Soo Kwon's marriage in the Season 5 finale, The Incident.

Hawaii Adventures: Byodo In Temple
A look at the tranquil grounds of the Byodo-in Temple, Kaneohe, Oahu, Hawaii.
The Byodo-In Temple on Oahu is a replica of a 900-year-old Buddhist Temple in Kyoto, Japan. The setting on Oahu in the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park with the Ko'olau mountains in the background is spectacular. The Temple is open to everyone and, though I am not a Buddhist, I appreciated its beauty and thoroughly enjoyed my visit.
This place is full of life and flowing streams of koi fish and a 20 foot tall golden buddha which sits at the center of the Temple. If you are looking to have a place to meditate, come here and fully engage yourself in peace and tranquility.
***Thanks again to the Royal Kuhio, for hooking us up with our accommodation! Awesome apartments with great sea views, just one block back from the beach! ***
