Vegas Balloon Rides - FULL VIDEO TOUR (Las Vegas, Nevada)
Taking a hot air balloon ride with Vegas Balloon Rides! This was in April 2017. It was a really fun expeirence and we did get a good amount of time in the air. Unfortunately, you have to get up really early for this, and you have to watch them unload everything and also help pack everything away afterwards. Your trip could get cancelled due to the weather (Which is rare in Las Vegas to be honest!)... That being said, we had a great time and as tradition goes, there was a champagne toast afterwards!

A hot air balloon is a lighter-than-air aircraft consisting of a bag, called an envelope, which contains heated air. Suspended beneath is a gondola or wicker basket (in some long-distance or high-altitude balloons, a capsule), which carries passengers and a source of heat, in most cases an open flame caused by burning liquid propane. The heated air inside the envelope makes it buoyant since it has a lower density than the colder air outside the envelope. As with all aircraft, hot air balloons cannot fly beyond the atmosphere. Unlike gas balloons, the envelope does not have to be sealed at the bottom, since the air near the bottom of the envelope is at the same pressure as the surrounding air. In modern sport balloons the envelope is generally made from nylon fabric and the inlet of the balloon (closest to the burner flame) is made from a fire resistant material such as Nomex. Modern balloons have been made in all kinds of shapes, such as rocket ships and the shapes of various commercial products, though the traditional shape is used for most non-commercial, and many commercial, applications.
The hot air balloon is the first successful human-carrying flight technology. The first untethered manned hot air balloon flight was performed by Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and François Laurent d'Arlandes on November 21, 1783, in Paris, France, in a balloon created by the Montgolfier brothers. The first hot-air balloon flown in the Americas was launched from the Walnut Street Jail in Philadelphia on January 9, 1793 by the French aeronaut Jean Pierre Blanchard. Hot air balloons that can be propelled through the air rather than simply drifting with the wind are known as thermal airships.

Trike Flying Lake Mead & Valley of Fire
Finally a break in the weather. Touring the lake and Valley of Fire on a beautiful Saturday morning. Starting at Echo Bay airstrip then flying north to valley of fire then east over the town remains of St. Thomas, then approaching the northern most tip of the lake and flying south along the east shoreline for 10 miles and then hopping across the lake going west, back to Echo Bay. Basically this was a large clockwise circle with good weather and a great view!

Biking the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop
We decided that on this trip to Las Vegas we'd leave the Strip, and a bicycle ride in Red Rock Canyon seemed like a great way to do that.
Red Rock canyon has a wide, mostly smooth 13-mile Scenic Loop through beautiful desert scenery. This video may give you an idea of how beautiful it is, but as with so much natural beauty you have to go there to actually experience it.
One great thing about the loop is how often the view changes. The park has so much variety, and the curves in the road and changes in elevation lead to some of the most dramatic changes in scenery I've seen on a bike ride--cresting a hill just as it curves and seeing the valley stretching out below was amazing.
We considered driving the 10 hours to Vegas with our bikes on a hitch, but we decided it made more sense to rent bikes instead. We ended up renting pedal assist e-bikes from EzRideLV (a small, family-owned company that we had a great experience with and would recommend). We picked up the bikes at a parking lot just on the edge of the Las Vegas development, and biked a few miles along Red Rock Canyon Road (a road with fast cars but a wide bike lane) before arriving at the Scenic Loop itself.
Inside the park the loop is very wide and one way, so there was plenty of room for cars and bikes without feeling crowded. Although there were plenty of cars, there were long stretches when it felt like we had the whole park to ourselves.
We ended up biking about 30 miles in total, including a few side trips.
We went in early May, 2019. This time of year seemed perfect--it was warm, but with the breeze we never felt too hot. There were also a significant number of wildflowers growing adding even more layers of color. I'd like to return at other times of year to experience how the park changes through the year.
With the hills, I was glad we were using the pedal assist e-bikes; we got a decent workout but were never struggling too much. The e-bikes we used were great, in some ways better than our own e-bikes. I was impressed with how long the battery lasted--after the 30 mile ride that included a lot of hills the battery level had barely budged.
Here's a PDF of the park newsletter that includes the loop:

Part 3 Top to Bottom - Ultralight Trike Odyssey - From Mt Whitney to Death Valley Cross Country.
Part 3 Top to Bottom - Ultralight Trike Odyssey - From Mt Whitney to Death Valley Cross Country.
This story started back in 2002, when I got my first two place trike, a Cosmos two stroke with rotax 503. I collaborated with my friend Gerry Charlebious to do a cross country adventure. To fly down to Mt Whitney, and fly from the highest point in the continental United States, to the bottom of the continent, Death Valley.
The result of this adventure is the classic Ultralight Trike Odyssey, Top to Bottom film.
For various safety and performance reasons we all flew single up to Mt Whitney and out to Death Valley. Loretta did not get to do this leg of the flight. So as we were passing through Lone Pine with the trike, we stopped by Lone Pine Airport and camped at the aircraft tiedown and figured we would fly the next day and hopefully summit Mt Whitney.
This is the story of that day.

Desert Valley to 12,000 Feet White Peak - Mt. Charleston, Nevada
Leo Fitzgerald and I took off from Calvada Meadow Airpark (NV74) located at 2,700 feet desert, climbed hard to 12,500 feet above Mt. Charleston, 8th highest peak in the state. The peak was covered with more than 20 feet snow from several storms in this winter. This mountain range is located just 20 miles from the center of Las Vegas. Actually you could observe casino buildings along Las Vegas Strip from there.
