Rotterdam Square Mall (Via|Port Rotterdam) - Raw & Real Retail
This is our walkthrough of Via|Port Rotterdam, formerly Rotterdam Square in Rotterdam, NY from April 17, 2019. This is a wonderfully designed Wilmorite Mall, complete with oversized pool-style fountain and epic skylights. Unfortunately this property has seen a few very poor changes in ownership, either resulting from or contributing to the lack of tenants in the mall. All the anchors have left the mall, and the inline tenants are sparse and emptying out. The newest owners have tried to spruce up the place with a goofy new name and aquarium/entertainment center, but it is too little way too late.
Check out our ongoing series of dead and dying shopping malls!

Here is some information from Wikipedia:
Via|Port Rotterdam, formerly Rotterdam Square, is a shopping mall located in Rotterdam, New York, United States. When it opened, the mall was originally called Rotterdam Square and owned by Wilmorite Properties (who also owned Wilton Mall in Wilton) until 2005, when Wilmorite was acquired by The Macerich Company, who then took over ownership and management of most of their properties. The mall has an area of 900,000 square feet on one level with 58 stores, a 450-seat food court as well as restaurants, an aquarium, entertainment center, and a seven-screen Sony-Loews Cineplex, now operated by Zurich Cinemas (independent company). The mall was purchased by Kohan Retail Investment Group in January 2014, and was later sold to Via Properties in June 2015. In 2016, Via Properties renamed the mall to Via|Port Rotterdam.
The mall is situated on a site once owned by the Vedder Family. Harman Albertse Vedder of Schenectady bought the land in 1672 and built a home on it. In 1832 Harmens' great-grandson Johannes sold it to Colonel Daniel David Schermerhorn Campbell, who constructed a 26-bedroom mansion on the site. The mall features a graveyard within the complex. Located in a corner between the food court entrance and the front side entrance, the graveyard is the family cemetery of the Vedder Family dating back to around 1715.
At the time of construction, the area around the mall was a nature preserve, and environmental groups were concerned that the building of the mall would endanger wildlife and pollute the wetlands on the opposite side of Route 337, now the Great Flats Nature Trail and Preserve.
From 1988 until January 2007, Rotterdam Square featured a full-size Italian carousel in the food court. The management sold the carousel in late 2006 and in January 2007 it was dismantled and removed.
Mike Kohan bought the mall from Macerich in January 2014 for $8.5 million.
In January 2015, Macy's, originally Hess's and later Filene's, announced that its store would be closing as part of a plan to close 14 stores nationwide. The space is now the location of a NYS taxation call center.
On February 12, 2015, local power company National Grid disconnected electric service due to a rumored $300,000.00 unpaid utility bill. The service was turned back on the next day.
In June 2015, the mall was sold for $9.25 million to Via Properties, which renamed the mall to Via|Port Rotterdam in 2016. They have invested $10 million into mall improvements, including exterior upgrades, a 25,000-square-foot aquarium, and a nearly 30,000 sq ft entertainment center with a bowling alley, sports bar, restaurant, and arcade.
On April 21, 2016, it was announced that Sears would also be closing as part of a plan to close 78 stores nationwide. The store closed in July 2016. The closure of Sears left Kmart as the only anchor left.
On October 15, 2018, Sears Holdings announced that Kmart would be closing as well in December 2018 as part of a plan to close 142 stores nationwide which left the mall with no anchor stores left. As of January 2019, only several in-line tenants are remaining in Via|Port Rotterdam as well as a call center for the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.

Albany named one of the most unfriendly cities in the world
ALBANY -- Whether it be a simple wave or a friendly smile, it appears that according to one magazine, New York's capital city is lacking it. Albany has been ranked the 13th most unfriendly city, not in the country.....but in the entire world.
A bold statement, the Visitors Center thinks is too much.
It is kind of shocking that albany would be considered unfriendly because the people here, everyone, i'm actually not originally from albany myself, but i've found everyone here to be very friendly, Lisa Jiardini with the Albany Visitors Center tells us.
Conde Nast Traveler asked readers to rate cities based on several factors, including friendlinessand the ones with the lowest scores, by default, end up with the title 'unfriendliest.' Readers had some harsh words for the city of Albany. One reader called the city dull, another saying quote it was best to avoid especially in the winter.
We do have some people come in that do say 'where is everybody Jiardini says.
The magazine also refered to the city as more of a through city than a travel destination. While that may not always be true, it was for Ed Frankle and his wife.
I think it's very nice i grew up near Kingston but i moved away 45 years ago and this is the first time I've been back we're just going through we're on our way home from a trip to Canada.
In the short time he's spent in the capital city, he say it doesn't deserve that negative ranking.
We've only been here a little while but everyone we've met was pretty friendly.
To say this ranking is bad publicity for the city would be an understatement, but the Visitor Center says there's a bright horizon ahead for the city, and that should overshadow everything.
There's talk about an aquarium and convention center and there are businesses more and more businesses coming to downtown Albany, so I think if people pay attention to that publicity then there shouldn't really be a problem.
Here is the full list of cities, as seen on the website:

An oxygen bar is an establishment, or part of one, that sells oxygen for recreational use. Individual flavored scents may be added to enhance the experience. The flavors in an oxygen bar come from bubbling oxygen through bottles containing aromatic solutions before it reaches the nostrils: most bars use food-grade particles to produce the scent, but some bars use aroma oils.
In 1776, Thomas Henry, an apothecary and Fellow of the Royal Society of England speculated tongue in cheek that Joseph Priestley’s newly discovered dephlogisticated air (now called oxygen) might become “as fashionable as French wine at the fashionable taverns”. He did not expect, however, that tavern goers would “relish calling for a bottle of Air, instead of Claret”
Another early reference to the recreational use of oxygen is found in Jules Verne's 1870 novel Around the Moon. In this work Verne states Do you know, my friends, that a curious establishment might be founded with rooms of oxygen, where people whose system is weakened could for a few hours live a more active life. Fancy parties where the room was saturated with this heroic fluid, theaters where it should be kept at high pressure; what passion in the souls of the actors and spectators! what fire, what enthusiasm! And if, instead of an assembly only a whole people could be saturated, what activity in its functions, what a supplement to life it would derive. From an exhausted nation they might make a great and strong one, and I know more than one state in old Europe which ought to put itself under the regime of oxygen for the sake of its health!
Modeled after the air stations in polluted downtown Tokyo and Beijing, the first official oxygen bar (the O2 Spa Bar) opened in Toronto, Canada, in 1996. The trend continued in North America and by the late 1990s bars were in use in New York, California, Florida, Las Vegas and the Rocky Mountain region. Customers in these bars breathe oxygen through a plastic hose inserted into their nostrils. Oxygen bars can now be found in many venues such as nightclubs, salons, spas, health clubs, resorts, tanning salons, restaurants, coffee houses, bars, airports, ski chalets, yoga studios, chiropractors, and casinos. They can also be found at trade shows, conventions and corporate meetings, as well as at private parties and promotional events.
Oxygen bar guests pay about one U.S. dollar per minute to inhale a percentage of oxygen greater than the normal atmospheric content of 20.9% oxygen. This oxygen is produced from the ambient air by an industrial (non-medical) oxygen concentrator and inhaled through a nasal cannula for up to about 20 minutes.
The machines used by oxygen bars or oxygen vendors differ from the typical medical-issue machine, although customers use the cannula, the rubber tube apparatus that fits around the ears and inserts in the nostrils, to breathe in the oxygen. Customers can enhance their experience by using aromatherapy scents to be added to the oxygen, such as lavender or mint.
It has been claimed by alternative medicine that the human body is oxygen-deprived, and that oxygen will remove toxins and even cure cancer. Proponents claim this practice is not only safe, but enhances health and well-being, including strengthening the immune system, enhancing concentration, reducing stress, increasing energy and alertness, lessening the effects of hangovers, headaches, and sinus problems, and generally relaxing the body. It has also been alleged to help with altitude sickness. However, no long-term, well-controlled scientific studies have confirmed any of the proponents' claims. Furthermore, the human body is adapted to 21 percent oxygen, and the blood exiting the lungs already has about 97 percent of the oxygen that it could carry bound to hemoglobin. Having a higher oxygen fraction in the lungs serves no purpose, and may actually be detrimental.
The medical profession warns that individuals with respiratory diseases such as asthma and emphysema should not inhale too much oxygen. Higher than normal oxygen partial pressure can also indirectly cause carbon dioxide narcosis in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The FDA warns that in some situations, droplets of flavoring oil can be inhaled, which may contribute to an inflammation of the lungs. Some oxygen bar companies offer safe water-based aromas for flavoring in order to maintain compliance and stay within FDA guidelines.....
Reptiles Left to Die at PetSmart Supplier Mill

Eyewitnesses found that reptiles were denied basic care, left to suffer with gruesome injuries, and cruelly killed at a PetSmart supplier.
Animals crammed into filthy, crowded plastic bins stacked into shelving units like old bank statements. Living beings deprived of water for days or even weeks. Sick and injured animals denied veterinary care. Emaciated, severely dehydrated animals desperate for water. Animals cruelly killed by being gassed or frozen to death. We've seen it time and time again at dealers that sell animals to pet stores, and now we've seen it again at Reptiles by Mack, a reptile mill in Xenia, Ohio, that breeds and sells frogs, lizards, turtles, and other animals to pet stores across the country, such as PetSmart.
This case is not unusual. Reptiles by Mack is the sixth animal dealer with ties to large pet store chains that PETA has exposed. PetSmart is well aware that investigation after investigation into its animal suppliers has found factory-farm conditions, filth, crowding, deprivation, neglect, cruelty, and prolonged, painful death. Yet it continues to sell animals and do business with these mills.
Please, pledge never to buy pet supplies from retailers that sell any animals. Let PetSmart officials know that you'll instead buy supplies from businesses that don't sell animals, such as Target, Walgreens, or online retailers:

Art of the Hunt: Hunting & Fishing Folklore
Wyoming-based folklorist Andrea Graham discusses her fieldwork among fishers and hunters in the contemporary American West and explores how these traditions maintain, reinforce and celebrate deeply-rooted elements of place, family and community life. The folklore and traditions surrounding hunting and fishing are among the most ancient expressions of traditional culture in contemporary America. Although hunting and fishing are not usually seen as artistic pursuits, a closer examination of the handmade tools and gear used, the skills of guides and outfitters, the decorative crafts involved and the hunting and fishing stories told among hunters reveal an enormous depth of creativity, beauty and tradition. These traditions remain strong, especially in the American West.
