Today we walk through the early morning city of Belgrade, Serbia ( or Beograd, Serbija as the locals call it). We start at Cirila Park, Make our way through Tašmajdan Park, past the Church of Saint Mark, and the National Assembly building. Then past Hotel Moscow, into the Pedestrian zone and past Republic Square, on to the Kalemegdanska terasa and the Belgrade fortress with the display of old military hardware and eventually overlooking the Sava and Danube Rivers. Belgrade or Beograd means white city and is named for the white walls of the fortress overlooking the two main waterways and thoroughares of the region. It has been a place of frequent conflict and bombardment, most recently with the NATO bombing of the city in the 1990s.

Belgrade is a vibrant, burgeoning city trying desperately to emerge from the economic turmoil wrought by war and sanctions. The food is wonderful and the people are welcoming. We visited on a very hot few days which made it almost unpleasant. It also gets quite cold in the winter. However, we had a wonderful time, including a river tour and several delicious and inexpensive meals. The train system is a bit slow but will get you where you are going. The train from Bar, Montenegro to Serbia took about 14 hours and included a bus ride at the end but the views of SW rural Serbia were magical. If you get the chance to visit, you should definitely take it.
From Wikipedia:
Belgrade is the capital of the southeast European country of Serbia. Its most significant landmark is the Beogradska Tvrđava, an imposing fortress at the confluence of the Danube and the Sava rivers. The fort is a testament to the city’s strategic importance to the Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Serbian and Austrian empires, and it's now the site of several museums as well as Kalemegdan, a vast park.

Kalemegdan Park and Belgrade Fortress, Walking Tour (Belgrade, Serbia)
Enable English subtitle ! - Activați subtitrarea în românește !
The video shows a very short, fast (and incomplete ...) tour of Belgrade's most important tourist destination, visited annually by over 2 million tourists. It is the Belgrade Fortress and the neighboring park, Kalemegdan Park (the battlefield of the fortress, in Turkish), whose name, curiously, has reversed on the fortress name (Kalemegdan Fortress). The history of the fortification goes down deep in history, being amazingly complex and with many situation reversals, impossible to present in a few words. From antiquity to the 20th century, the fortress underwent many sieges, passed successively through many masters, through many destructions, renovations, extensions and modernizations, at the same time witnessing the formation and victory of the Serbian people.

Pobednik Monument - Belgrade, Serbia
The Pobednik (The Victor) monument was set up in the Upper Town of Belgrade Fortress in Belgrade, built to commemorate Serbia's victory over Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empire during the Balkan Wars and the First World War. Built in 1928 and standing at 14 meters high, it is one of the most famous works of Ivan Meštrović. It is also one of the most visited tourist attractions in Belgrade and the city's most recognizable landmark. It is a standing bronze male figure with an eagle in the right hand and a sword in the left, modelled by the sculptor Ivan Meštrović, set on a pedestal in the form of a Doric column on a tall cubic base, designed by the architect Petar Bajalović

Top best places to visit in Belgrade, Serbia
Belgrade is the capital and largest city of Serbia.
Belgrade, literally translates as the “White City”, it is one of the oldest cities in Europe, dating back to the 3rd century BC.
The Republic Square is the main meeting point in town. It is the site of the National Theater, the Statue of Prince Michael and the National Museum.
Many locals consider the Republic Square to be the city’s centerpiece areas but the Belgrade’s designated center is Terazije.
In its vicinity are some of Belgrade’s most recognizable buildings, including:
The House of the National Assembly of Serbia.
The Old Palace, today the City Hall but once a royal residence as well as, standing on the opposite side, the New Palace, today the seat of the President.
Between National Assembly and Terazije is one of the central squares in downtown, the Nikola Pasic Square.
Prince Michael Street, the main pedestrian and shopping zone and the oldest and most valuable landmarks of the city, connects Terazije, Republic Square and the Fortress.
The Kalemegdan Fortress used to be an important military fortification and now serves as the central park of Belgrade.
Within the fortress is located, the Statue of Victor, one of the symbols of the town.
It offers beautiful sunsets and views.
Belgrade has many important churches, such as:
The Saint Sava Temple, the largest Orthodox church in Serbia, and one of the biggest Orthodox churches in the whole world.
Belgrade Cathedral, a Serbian Orthodox Christian church dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel.
St Mark’s Church, a Serbian Orthodox basilica, one of the largest religious buildings in the country.
Belgrade is also the capital of Serbian culture with many great museums and galleries, like:
The Museum of the History of Yugoslavia and Tito’s Mausoleum.
And the Nikola Tesla Museum, an exhibition dedicated to the great inventor whom Serbs revere.
Worth seeing is also the Palace of Serbia, a government building located in the New Belgrade municipality.
Near by, along the river, is a long promenade with many floating restaurants serving local seafood.
There are approximately one-thousand sports facilities in metropolis, many of which are capable of serving all levels of sporting events.
The city is home to Serbia’s two biggest and most successful football clubs, Red Star and Partizan Belgrade.
A historical area, that anyone visiting the city should aim to see, with narrow churches, houses and streets is the Zemun.
The Millennium Tower, located at the top of the hill in Zemun, was built on the site of medieval fortress and provides visitors with the beautiful view of Belgrade and river.

Beautiful Belgrade Fort Serbia Europe Tour Visit must watch
The Belgrade fortress located in Serbia is built on a white ridge above the confluence of the Sava and the Danube, rising above the city and protecting it.
If you haven’t seen Belgrade yet, you simply must visit the capital of Serbia and tour Upper and Lower Town of the Belgrade fortress and stroll through the Kalemegdan park. In the shadow of high towers you will feel the spirit of history that is still alive in this place. The “Victor” monument – victor over time, oversees the rivers and guards the river banks.
Upper Town of the Belgrade fortress
The Belgrade fortress was built during a long period of time from the 2nd to the 18th century. Destroyed and rebuilt numerous times, the fortress has become the symbol of the city that keeps raising and growing.
Armies, people and conquerors have left their mark, hence the historical layers that were left by Romans, Serbs, Turks, Austro-Hungarians lying one beneath another.
The Romans had built the first fortification in the 2nd century and later it was home to the Roman legion IV Flaviae which protected the area. It suffered devastation by Goths, Huns, Avars and Slavs. Sometime during that tumultuous time, the ancient Singidunum was created. It was erected on the very same white ridge after which it was named “BEO-grad” (WHITE-city).
Today the Belgrade fortress comprises of Upper and Lower Town and the vast field in front the very fortress that Turks named “Kalemegdan”, joining the words “kale”, which means city, fortress and “megdan”, the Turkish word for field. The most beautiful and most spacious park in nation’s capital once used to be a field where battles were fought with enemies.
The beauty and significance of this place can be conceived only if you visit it. Beneath every footstep made in the Belgrade fortress lies more history than it can be found in history books. The so-called “Roman well” that was actually built in the early 18th century hides numerous stories. Most of the gates leading into the city are preserved, as well as the Sahat tower (eng. Clock tower) that still today looks like it looked the day it was built.
One of the rare preserved monuments of Islamic architecture in Belgrade is Damad Ali Pasha’s Turbeh in Lower Town. There are also Big Gunpowder Magazine and Hamam – Old Turkish Bath. Those who like the history of war shouldn’t miss the opportunity to visit the Military Museum in Lower Town and the Nebojša tower – the medieval canon tower that Turks transformed into a dungeon.
The view of the city from the rivers Danube and Sava is breathtaking. You will see the monumental “Victor” rising above the walls of the city, the symbol of Belgrade and victory over time. Bronze sculpture of a nude man holding a pigeon and a sword, the work of sculptor Ivan Meštrović, was set on occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Salonika Front breakthrough.
Belgrade fortress still stands defying the time and hiding numerous legends. It is inviting you to discover at least some of them and find out why the views from the Kalemegdan are truly everlasting.
