Vietnam Vespa Adventures Tour of Saigon
Carmen and Dave from go on a Vietnam Vespa Adventures Tour of Saigon. Join them for the ride!
From the blog: As you probably already know by now, Dave and I aren’t really tour people. We often like to go out on our own, and if you can experience something independently, then we feel that (for us) it’s better to do it solo.
But riding a scooter was not going to be an independent journey for us.
Enter Vietnam Vespa Adventures. Our friends who’d visited us from China the week earlier said they’d used this company to do a tour of the Meekong Delta and raved highly of it. “They really knew their stuff and it was a great day,” our friend Kevin said.
I logged on to their website and saw they had a day tour around Saigon’s centre called the Insider’s Saigon tour. They were going to take us on a highlight tour of the city. Mode of transport? A vintage Vespa.
We were in.
A park where the birds socialise
We were picked up from our apartment at 8am, still yawning. We woke up quickly as we jumped on the back of a Vespa and our guides manoeuvred into the thick of rush hour traffic. Intense! A bus nearly clipped our scooter, but my driver was non-plussed, I think near misses are far from a rare occurrence in Saigon.
We were taken to Tao Dan Park and found it busy with men drinking coffee on small tables as their caged birds chirped to each other above them.
“These birds aren’t for sale,” our guide explained. “They are owned by these men, who come to the park each morning between 7 and 9. They like to see their birds socialise with one another.”
But looking around us, it was clear that the men were enjoying the socialising, sipping on strong café sua das, just as much as their birds were.
Memorial to an amazing act that denies belief
Our next stop wasn’t so light-hearted. We hopped back on the Vespas and scootered off to the
Thích Quảng Đức memorial. Now, this Buddhist monk’s name may not have any recognition for you, but you probably remember this photo that was broadcast around the world:
Thích Quảng Đức burned himself to death on the 10th of June 1963 in the middle of Saigon, without making a noise nor moving a muscle, deep in meditation. Why’d he do it? He was protesting against the government’s attempts to ban Buddhism throughout Vietnam.
“Thích Quảng Đức’s body was re-cremated at his funeral but his heart didn’t burn,” our guide explained to us. “Still intact, it was thought to be a symbol of compassion.”
My hairs stood up on end.
The memorial is built on the same site where Thích Quảng Đức sacrificed himself and it’s a striking tribute to someone willing to stand up for what they believe in – even through the most painful of deaths.

Vietnam Vespa Adventures in Hoi An
Carmen and Dave from go on another Vietnam Vespa Adventures tour, this time in Hoi.
From the blog: Our tour would take in the verdant countryside surrounding Hoi An where farmers grow wide green fields of rice, long horned buffalos chill out in mud pits and all manner of ducks, geese, ducks and chickens chirp and peck amid the vegetable and herb crops. Out there, people work in the heat and the rain, unchanged traditions for hundreds of years.
We slapped on sunglasses, sunscreen and long trousers and packed our hats and plenty of water, then were picked up on beautifully presented Vespa scooters by our drivers at around eight am. I reckon the temperature was already hovering close to thirty degrees Celsius, and from the growing triumph of the sun it would get hotter still.
Our first stop was the ferry dock by the inlet river, and our drivers threaded us through the bright blacktop streets of Hoi An’s old town where you won’t find on air-conditioned building.
It’s all UNESCO heritage listed to protect the character of the French style stucco buildings. But the tree-lined boulevards throw plenty of shade, and we took a few short cuts through narrow laneways throbbing with cooler air and startled pedestrians.
Hoi An began its life many centuries ago as a trading post that took advantage of its natural harbour and reliable waterways. The French colonists developed it as a port town and the riches that flowed through it eddied into classical buildings, many painted yellow, and at night they are lit up with a kaleidoscope of colourful lanterns, making it all seem like a dream, even in the bright light of day.
The shade blinked away as we emerged into the unforgiving heat of the docks where a wooden ferry hip and shouldered the quay, swinging on the morning tide. Our Vespas were loaded on board and we boarded – “watch your head,” ringing in my ears as I bashed my head on the low beams of the sunshade.
The ropes were cast away and our venerable craft chugged away under the power of its clapped out marine diesel, brackish smells of tide and the day’s catch of fish following us. The bow aimed for Cam Kim island, and in no time at all the hull swung to port at the other side and docked with a nudge.
Back on the bikes, legs up and over onto hot seats, our drivers gunned us through a small village shaded by phalanxes of bamboo and willow trees then took us along a long canal where dredges were going hammer and tongs to create a new rice paddy. Everywhere people were working – digging ditches, threshing rice fields, sowing crops or riding scooters hither and thither. The temperature was pushing thirty degrees by now, but the morning’s work had only just gotten warm.

Vintage Vespa Tour, Hanoi Vietnam
Ok so here is a way you can get in amongst the chaos without fearing your not going to make it. Hanoi Vespa Tours are fantasist value for money with their personalised service door to door.
My wife and I had our own drivers while our very knowledgable guide Helen (Lệ Võ Nhật) followed us around to many of the must-see tourist hotspots.
Our drivers Le & Han were amazing. When the traffic is simply at a stand still, these guys work their magic safety manoeuvring their way through every possible gap to keep us moving and on our way.
Though there are plenty of holy-Crap moments, you can be rest-assured you will feel very safe with these guys, so you can relax and enjoy the scenery with plenty of stops along the way.
Though there are a couple of GoPro scenes, this was pretty much entirely shot with a DJI OSMO, which was fantastic to keep the footage nice and smooth.

Hope you give it a go . . .

Mr. Ngai & Famous White Rose of Hoi An
Meet Mr. Ngai. He's the owner of the famous White Rose restaurant in Hoi An, Vietnam. This classic dish was created by Ngai's grandfather, and has been in his family for over 100 years. White Rose is a special and delicate dumpling, made with rice flour and a shrimp paste filling. It takes years to master the skill of folding this dumpling into its famous White Rose shape.
When travelling in Hoi An, you'll see White Rose on a lot of menus, however they are most likely buying them from Mr. Ngai and recooking them. They're not as tasty as they are at Mr. Ngai's restaurant. If you visit White Rose, you may witness Mr. Ngai singing and drinking his homemade (deliciously sweet) plum wine.
To try making your own White Rose, join us on our Streets & Eats of Hoi An Vespa Adventure!

A ride with Vespa Tours Ho Chi Minh City (Siagon)
A ride to our first stop on the Saigon After Dark tour. I enjoyed it. As silly as it sounds, it's a different perspective on crossing the street. The venues were a bit staged, but the ride was excellent, the guide was friendly, and the drivers were terrific. Totally recommend if you're on the fence.
